It's always kinda bugged me that #eia doesn't really have any requirements. I normally associate the phrase "evolution in action" with the Darwin Awards where you must remove yourself from the gene pool (ie get yourself killed or render yourself unable to reproduce) and a lot of other people seem to think the same. Presently #eia only requires people doing something stupid or dangerous.

With the arrival of #fail, we've got a fair amount of overlap between the two.

Bringing #eia in line with the Darwin Awards requirements always felt right to me, but then it would be handicapped by the snuff rule. Can we come up with another definition which avoids this problem yet is still worthy of being evolution in action?

Or should we just can it and let #fail take the reins?
gwiz665 says...

Fail is something that fails, and attempt at something that doesn't work, or something simply stupid.

EIA is something that should never have been attempted in the first place. Extraordinarily stupid. Something we would like evolution to weed out in the future. Also darwin award (light, since we don't allow snuff).

Even though there is some overlap, I would rather they were left alone.

I take offense at that, the channel having been my baby gwiz665, and it's obvious on this poll so far, that you are in the minority. You give me enough time back and I'll reveal some more "Extraordinarily stupid" aspects of perception, thought and action. (Someone needs to check their own EIA meter)

Here's the original intent from the originator if anyone gives a fiddler's fork-EIA was created because way back when, there was a need for a Darwin Award channel-TRULY LIFE-AND-PROGENY DESTROYING ACTS like many other channels, it has become diluted with all manner of crapola. Simply redefine the parameters of the content that satisfies the spirit of the channel, and carry the fuck on.

At first I thought fail vids would be covered JUST as well in EIA, but since the popularity of "FailBlog" and the expression turned meme(no doubt with some help from Blankfist), it too has a unique place for all manner of vids that are not simply dumb ass, survival-skill challenged, fleshbots.

"How 'bout "Leave my motherfucking channel on the motherfucking plane, PLEASE??!!"

...motherfucking polls....*grumble grumble ....cut-rate, douchebag, sitting in their underwear, cheeto-stained finger sumbitches... ....*grumble grumble

....and the comment down votes from the peanut gallery flow like a night of Guinness from the trotty-bottoms of pub-crawling Irishmen.

Again. Context. Perception. Personal dislikes shaping judgment, personality, and reason.

Never asked for that demon_ix, gwiz665's , unilateral involvement in my affairs here was appreciated and I have told him so.....What your goddamn point if not to simply attempt "clever", in an all-familiar Snide, Smugly Douchenstein manner??

And he wonders why he must suffer these monkeys, the zookeeper having left the door open to the Lionhouse.

My point is, that while you may disagree with the poll, you have a vote and so does anyone else on the site. Some people objected to the poll to allow you to come back, and still the end result was the majority vote.

Getting personal and attacking people over a channel doesn't really help anything.

choggie says...

No, but orchestrating a personal attack then pretending it's simply an innocent poll is perfectly acceptable. Even if it's NOT a personal attack, notice the most diligent on the thread so far feel they need a back and forth-I have been playing defense so far with some pretty inane sensibilities. Not the best with my morning coffee. Bring it on.

I wasn't aware you were the originator of the channel, choggie. I think karaidl owned it by the time I came along.

I'm of the opinion that quite a few channels should be redefined, deleted or merged as the number of channels continues to grow. I tried to call people to action some months back but ultimately nothing came of it.

Throbbin says...

^The internets is srs bizness!

Chill the fudge out folks.

IMHO, which I am aware no one gives a crap about, EIA should be left as is. Like ^someone said, with no snuff vids allowed, we must allow for honourable mentions.

campionidelmondo says...

I voted "delete", simply because I feel there are way too many channels already, and chances are it's gonna get worse.

I remember when I started submitting videos how annoying it was to select the channels from that giant wall of checkboxes. Part of the channel names were too vague to me to even know what they're about. Overcast is on the right track here, but this problem will never get enough attention for one simple reason:

The people who are discussing it have almost without exception all posted 50+ videos, and therefore by now know what channels they want to assign their video to before they even look at the checkbox wall.

Another problem is finding a solution that is acceptable. Personally, I like the grouping idea, since, for example, nobody is going to select "Islam" without selecting "Religion". Also, some channels are just too vague or overlap others, but deleting or merging them is not exactly fair to some people either, and some take it way to serious and personal (thank you choggie for demonstrating that).

choggie says...

Thank you camippodekmundi, but it's really not about anything else but pulling weeds, every garden needs constant care, your input here on the site has been invaluable. Don't really want any attention given to this channel, this poll, or myself while I am hobbled and powerless to move here-Your point regarding those who have been here long enough to know how to manage their posts, much appreciated.

I like EIA and see it as something completely different than Fail

A video of a guy falling off a cliff is FAIL
A bird falling into water is FAIL
Doing something stupid and failing in an obvious way is a FAIL
Someone getting hit in the genitals with a ball is FAIL

A guy falling off a cliff because he blindfolded himself is EIA
A bird learning to swim is EIA
Germs mutating to evade extinction is EIA
Someone willingly injuring his genitals is EIA

Sagemind says...

By the way, I for one, like the channel Selections.

I like that I can usually find 2-3 channels that help classify the posts I make.
What I would hate (and it has happened) is posting a video and NOT finding 2-3 channels that accurately classify my post.

The way I see it there are two options.
A). Organize the channel selections - as has been suggested many, many times to make it easier to sort through. (my recommendation)

B). Delete a bunch of the channels and slim it down - doing this creates 2 problems:
a). you would have to create an "Other" channel (bad idea).
b). you would have to remove the Ruby reward of being able to create and run a new channel (also a bad idea).

Neither of these things logically follow the choice to trim the channels back. If anything, I think we'd be more likely to stop making new channels if we don't clean up from time to time.

Creating an "other" channel is a bad idea. Why did you come up with it?

I think a combination of cleanup (your option B) and organization (your option A) is the best solution.

videosiftbannedme says...

I never quite understood why we have both channels and tags. They serve the same function, as long as people properly tag their videos (ie. don't become a comma-whore; use proper, descriptive and concise tags). It seems to me it makes more work for one's self.

I do however like the fact that each has it's own talk section, so you can always find the latest opinions, news, etc, on whatever floats your boat.

Oh well...the yin to the yang, I suppose.

gwiz665 says...

Hahaha, learn to read, choggie. I never said the EIA-channel was stupid, I said the things IN the channel were that. Looks like it's not ME that's letting my personal feelings cloud my judgment. I'll accept your heart-felt apology right here any time.

Remember that the channels we have were created because we saw a need. If we remove a bunch of them, then there "WILL" be those videos that no longer suit the remaining channels. Which is why I brought up the "Other" tag (a particularly bad idea) because there has to be an option for those videos. (I for one, would never want to see an Other channel.)

I'm sure I can up with channels that can be deleted too but they aren't going to be the same as the next guy that uses those channels. (Cinema, Election08, Future, Humanitarian, Mystery, Obscure, Travel, Woohoo). These were created by people that saw a need for these channels. Categorize the channels, but be careful what you want to remove, cause like I said, I like the channels, as many other do.

Back to the point of this post: EIA and FAIL are different. I suggest the moderators define, judge and remove posts that don't belong. There will always be overlap.

Sort of like the overlap between Animation & Woohoo, Comedy & Happy, Standup & Talks, Music & Livemusic, Conspiracy & Lies...

Overlap doesn't have to mean "the same thing" they are more like adjectives, they help to define.

xxovercastxx says...

^It just feels sloppy to me, but clearly I'm in the minority.

I still think some channels could use tweaking. I think all channels should have a clear channel description no matter how obvious we might think they are. It also makes sense to me to consider redefining channels that might not have worked out as originally planned. That doesn't mean a complete change of the channel's definition, just a shift. #election08, for example, is pretty much a dead channel at this point. Why not change it to #elections?

choggie says...

The channels CAN use tweaking constantly xxovercast-I have imagined another iteration of the site as well. Redefining/refining, all part of the art of those who manage the channels or leave them to evolve...Perhaps a way for users wanting to breathe more life into already established channels and their vids assignments would be to make the channels now mismanaged or abandoned altogether, tweakable by all users with a view to giving the channels here and to come, more vibrancy and character....after all, that's what they all started out as...passion-the passion of the creator, and the energy given to it as the site has evolved.

Some of the folks who have created channels and have disappeared???...Their channels stay as a tribute to their memories...Like fucking tombstones in some forgotten civil war graveyard near a strip center, we have to suffer them and tread lightly-After all...."Theys' dead motherfuckers sleeping underneath us all."
