A little about me...
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Mark Blyth is my third favorite Scot, right after two brothers who are dear friends of mine. After his famous interview for Athens Live, every video of his released by the Watson Institute has pretty much been a must-watch, particularly his takes on "The Deplorables" and the Front Nationale.

I got his book "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea" after it was praised heavily over at NakedCapitalism 3-4 years ago -- to me, there is no bigger compliment for an economist than praise by Yves and the commentariat over at NC.

His takes on the mercantilism of Germany are among the best, and by far the clearest. Bill Mitchell had some great pieces on it as well, but Blyth's capacity for facilitating understanding of these concepts is on a different level entirely.

So do I disagree with him on parts of his economic analysis? Yes, but only on the fringes where MMT/functional finance is concerned.

Check out the companion talk to his book:

ok....i come to you for your opinion on my new favorite political scientist.this is the man who predicted brexit and trump, and his ability to depoliticize complex political and economic dynamics is just beautiful.(or maybe i just like the fact that it sounds like i am getting schooled by shrek)

i have watched pretty much every one of his lectures, and i cannot find a flaw in his logic.he appears to have his finger on the pulse of our global economic situation.

but economics has never been my strong suit.i have always struggled with economics.so i come to you,hat in hand, and ask if maybe my adoration is misplaced.

totally worth the time:

the left won the moral argument decades ago,now a small cadre a shrieking harpies has taken over to....ok..i don't know WHAT they are trying to do,because everytime i try to speak to one of those snowflakes, they spray me with pepper spray, call me a rapist and run to their safe space.

or they tell me that i am not entitled to an opinion, because i am a hetero-white-male.

not saying a discussion with someone on the ultra right fares any better.either they want to share their adoration of their corporate jesus..joel olsteen..or they are constantly trying to berate me with neo-fascist literature, and show me just how patriotic a super patriot like them REALLY is,and then tell me why they couldn't join the military due to horrible bunions.

and of course one mention of muslims and they wet themselves.getting sick of loaning out my extra clothes because their bladder gets weak at the mere mention of brown people.

for years we have watched the left lose their way,and get lost in an ocean of rhetoric and faux outrage, and the same has happened with the right.

the extremes have taken hold of the megaphone, and are trying to shout each other down with their own sanctimonious self-righteous moralizing.

so the left is in the corner picking boogers and the right has gone fucking insane.

i'm telling you guys...
trump is not the disease...
he is a symptom.

our country is very very sick right now.

and i fear it is only going to get worse.

i predicted when trump won that he would rival bush in his ineptness and bungling buffoonery.well here it is a month into his presidency and i think i can say with some conviction:i was wrong..it is going to be so much worse than bush.

i need a drink...

Blythe's definitely an interesting fellow. I watched a couple of his videos [you?] posted and they were undeniably depressing but fascinating and made a lot of sense to me. I've never taken a xanax but have an ample supply of diazepam thankyouverymuch

i am surprised you watched that PP...i hope it didn't bring ya too down.i like your upbeat nature.
i went on a mark blythe kick,i really love his nonsense approach, and an ability to separate the politics from the truth.

he has a knack to show us all how both sides, both choices had advantages and disadvantages.

but yeah, dark stuff and a pretty uncertain future for us all.

need a xanax?

Me too.

I read a review of Identity Thief when it first came out that nailed the reason she is so very very good.

Silly little slapstick broad comedy, right? And the reviewer said -- I'm watching it and I'm like, what? What is she doing? She's ACTING. She is actually living truthfully each and every beat.

Those weren't his words, of course. I translated them into to Actor Speak from my many acting classes I have taken.

But yeah. She rocks my world.
