Sarah Silverman on Countdown with Keith Olbermann

Having an opinion is above Obama's pay grade

Lurch says...

I don't think Obama necessarily believes that he is a political messiah, but I know people who sure think he is. I've also read comments here throughout the nomination process where people are really expecting monumental things from this guy like he is going to raise his staff and bring world peace. I've come to realize throughout the past few months when discussing this with friends of differing political beliefs that the things that bother me about Obama are positives to them. The same thing here. You say that your are pinning hopes on Obama to bring about the ascendancy of the Democratic platform. That is the last thing I would want to see. Not only have the Democrats failed to deliver on just about every single promise they made to gain congressional control, but they have an approval rating even lower than Bush right now. This coming from Americans of all political affiliations.

He has also caved on more than FISA. He retracted his initial statements about the surge being a useless idea and pretended to be a supporter. A Virginia democrat claimed the surges success was credited to Obama. Obama now professes the success of the surge in a complete 180 from his original statements that it would worsen the situation. When asked if he could go back to the moment he voiced his opposition to the surge, and use the information he has now to make his decision, Obama said that he would not change his opinion since being opposed to Bush was more important at the time than the outcome. He also reversed his position on gun control while cleaning up the mess from his clinging to God and guns statement about Pennsylvania.

I see Obama as a man with loads of good intentions that will serve to break this country even further. Bush went crazy with the Patriot Act and other expansions of government power in the name of saftey. Spending is getting out of control and the economy is slow. I think Obama will drive the nail in its coffin with full support of a Democratic ascendancy.

Ahmadinejad on the History of Israel and Threats of Force

I agree with him completely about the audacity of the US being a permanent member of the UN Security Council. The task of that organization is to keep world peace, and we go around bombing the fuck out of everybody we don't like. Before they even attack us!

And I agree that it represents his beliefs more than any blurb you'll see in the States. You can tell it's not from American television because there's no ticker on the bottom of the screen talking about Angelina Jolie's babies.

>> ^NetRunner:
Interesting, and definitely more information there about Iran's public stance on both Israel and America than you'll ever find in the news here.
Sounded like echoes of Bush from the other side. Remind people of the open wounds about Israel, then deftly tie it to America's genesis, and then rally on about America's crimes to get the more reasonable non-US governments out there going, and then call for us to lose our seat on the Security Council.
Kinda neat to see him essentially openly discuss the possibility of Iran having nuclear weapons. I'm surprised that's not on an endless loop in our own local propaganda outlets.

pretty much how I feel about it these days... (Blog Entry by smibbo)

I agree almost 100% with farhad, and dag, and i thought the article linked was just whiny. If you don't like encountering different people's views, hey, how about DON'T TRAVEL AND DON'T TALK TO PEOPLE IN BARS.

And shitloads of people refuse to eat McDonalds AND have a dim view of american foreign policy, AND have a dim view of their own countries' politics. If one of these people tells you America has wasted the best chance in history to create world peace, do you listen then? Or make some other excuse why you don't have to listen? Maybe if i like The Doors and Jefferson Airplane I am not allowed to criticise America? Right? That's logical?

When you travel abroad you represent your entire nation, like it or not.

At least people don't assume you are a football hooligan who wears a bowler hat and drinks tea all day from a golden cup, sitting on a chair made of money.

Why help with an am when theres always a could?
Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea
Outside of California, its foreign policy

Your dilemmas are my distractions

No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco, franco un-american

Then I read some howard zinn now Im always depressed
And now I cant sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little noam chomsky

I eat no breath-mints cause their from de-hoofed horses
Now I cant believe; what an absolute failure
The presidents laughing cause we voted for nader

Where can we go, franco un-american

I want to move north and be a canadian
Or hang down low with the nice australians
I dont want to be another i-dont-care-ican
What are we gonna do franco, franco un-american

Ellen DeGeneres asks McCain why he opposes gay marriage

dannym3141 says...

Once you take religion out of it, it becomes a government recognized contract, a transmittal of rights. There should be no confusion between marriage and civil rights. The right of Gays to enter into a binding contract that transmits rights should be recognized by our government. A good step at compromise would be for the government to not be performing ceremonies or calling it marriage for any couple. Mail it in. If you want a ceremony talk to your preferred religion's local priest or, if atheist, make up your own ceremony for your friends and relatives to witness your commitment. Then we can move on to such crazy things as feeding the poor and world peace.

Hahahahaha! Presidents can't get even close to being elected in that country unless they claim to be christian, wishfull thinking dude!

I think over in england "marriage" has become a term without religion.. it's often referred to as "gay marriage" although the correct term is civil partnership.

That's probably exactly what you're saying i guess. Can't see it happening in america with the current "poligion" hybrid masquerading as politics.

I would put birth control in the water supply. The antidote would be free and widely available, but I think it would save a ton of money and make people more responsible. *crickets* oh...and I would buy World Peace! *massive applause*

"September 12th" by David Wilcox

snoozedoctor says...

Where is that paradise recorded? Because it predates written language, and because none remain alive from that period (that I know of), we have no idea whether peace or warfare prevailed. Available evidence suggests it was probably very violent. Tribal culture is notoriously violent, as one competes with the other for resources and territory. Remember the "ice man" they found a few years ago in a European glacier. As I recall, he lived more than 5,000 years ago. Interestingly, he was armed with bow and arrows and likely died of that arrowhead found lodged in his chest. This notion of some prior utopia is not supported by evidence, sorry to say. The noble savage was exactly that "savage."

Rule of law, shared governance, and common enterprise would result in the best chance for world peace. That's a tall order, but one I hope we may, someday, find.

>> ^Irishman:
War is indeed one of the constants of history, but "history" in this context is the last 4000 years - ie, recorded history.
There existed until 12,000 - 14,000 years ago a kind of paradise on this planet which is embedded even deeper into our human makeup. The male dominator culture and the slow death of tribal culture destroyed it.

Huckabee Scares Me

nadabu says...

To almost all the commenters above: Nice. Real nice. Just what we need, more fearful and intolerant knee-jerk reactions to other people's religious beliefs. Never mind trying to actually understand Huckabee's motivations or reasonings. Let's just call the people we disagree with scary and stupid and dangerous, after all, it's obvious that they are ill-intentioned and not worth hearing out. That's sure to bring world peace in a hurry! Our groupthink is better than theirs! Live in fear and animosity towards diversity!

When are you people gonna learn that you can't fight hate with hate, fear with fear, or intolerance with intolerance? Get a clue! Make a real effort to understand that which scares you and the hearts of the people behind it. Until you do that, you will never be any wiser, smarter or more loving than they are, and you might even be less so.

War is Over

9058 says...

Overly idealistic but i like to believe someday maybe possible. Though when did world peace mean no starving people, no frustration, no fear, and nothing but love? I think frustration is just human nature, you will never eliminate it (and personally i dont think you should) but just because im frustrated or if i dont love someone doesnt mean im going to be violent towards them. You can still have peace with these things involved. All im saying is one step at a time
