The 7th Guest: Official Trailer

ant says...

I almost bought a PAS16. I ended up with a SB16(?) back then. I never got into KQ series since I wasn't an adventure game guy. However, CK games were fun. I liked 4-6 better than 1-3. Of course, Wolf3D and DOOM. Dang!

I don't have privileges to promote this but man, you made me think back to the olden days. For years, I had only a PC speaker, and all my friends had an AdLib or Sound Blaster. The day I got a ProAudio Spectrum 16 was the day I discovered just how much I'd been missing out on all those years. King's Quest and Commander Keen never sounded so good.

Even 20 years later, I still remember which of those wall tiles provide access to secret areas, yet I can't remember what I had for lunch on Friday. Way to go, brain.

Haha, me too. But do you remember ALL the secrets in the whole game? I am bad with DOOM 1-2 as well. Ah, my teen(age) days.

I love teh FPS.

I've been playing since I was a kid, but one of my best memories was when I switched to keyboard/mouse from arrow keys and hope. If I remember correctly Wolf3d had no multi-player, but I did Doom a couple times on DWANGO. I just assumed everyone on there was some sort of superhero so I focused on making maps and playing by myself. (Don't come in mom!)

When I started playing Duke3d regularly with friends however, I became acutely aware that the arrow keys won't cut it. The turning moment was a 1 on 1 match with my longtime game-nerd friend Lee.

We setup a time and day to play, and we each had friends come over to watch. In those days playing multi-player directly person to person was still cool enough that you would drive to your buddy's house just to watch it take place. With a couple folks watching at each end, he completely schooled me. It wasn't even close. I didn't get a hit on him most encounters. This thorough ass-whooping was unbelievable. For over an hour I tried, but couldn't get a single kill. With my pride on the line, I devised a plan.

In the initial version of Duke you could lay down as many pipebombs as you wanted, provide you had them to throw. I learned the map, learned his pattern, and cautiously avoided him while grabbing the pipebomb stack each time it spawned. I left pipebombs scattered, and when I thought they were randomly distributed enough I holed myself up in a corner with a viewpoint of the only elevator up to my eagle's nest. The pipebomb spawn was ten feet in front of me. I laid out all the pipebombs I could at the top of that elevator. Each time it spawned I would grab the 4 pack, put all 4 in the same place at the top of the elevator, and retreat hastily to my protected corner.

Finally the time came. I saw the elevator called down. I knew he was coming up. I would get this kill and then end the game, false pride in tact. My time of vengeance was finally here! The elevator came up, and with perfect timing I hit the fire button and saw the beginning of the largest group of sprite based explosions known to man. The beginning. I didn't see the end. Instead I saw:

Top 10 FPS

videosiftbannedme says...

I hate lists like this because the propose to be a Top 10 FPS's of all time, but it seemed like more than 1/2 of them were released in the last 4 years. I do have to give props for them at least including Duke3D and not completely ignoring common sense.

To me the Top 10 will always have to include innovation and an evolution in not only technology but gameplay as well.

So here are at least 8 that should have/were on the list:

Doom - As fun as Wolf3D was, Doom was funner. Besides, everything exploded after Doom.

Duke3D - For adding in crazy weapons, jumping, crouching, looking up/down, jetpacks, crazy locations, etc, etc.

Quake - For kickstarting polygonal, online deathmatch multiplayer goodness.

System Shock 2 - Bioshock was just SS2 in a new, pretty wrapper. SS2 added RPG like elements, a great story, etc.

Unreal Tournament - Taking multiplayer to the next step with customization and Bot AI that was just uncanny.

Half-Life - For creating a truly immersive world; it was like playing inside a $200 million dollar blockbuster movie, as opposed to just watching it. (Still my #1 video game of all time. Where the hell is Black Mesa Source already??? )

Deus Ex - For doing emergent gameplay right. Want to go in gun's blazin'? Check. Want to go stealthy? Check. Want to hack instead? Check. Want to switch back and forth among these different elements depending on what any given situation called for? Check.

Tribes/Battlefield 1942 (tie) - For taking online multiplayer outdoors and giving gamers vehicles to drive around in. I never got a chance to get into Tribes, but I do recognize innovators when I see them. I still remember the first day I loaded Wake Island (BF1942 demo); some of the best DM memories are still linked to that day.

Now with all that said, where is my Duke/Descent/Freespace/Battlefield/WoW/Deus Ex/Half-Life hybrid I've been waiting for??

Top 10 FPS

Wolf3D, Halo and Goldeneye don't belong on that list. The parameters for "best" needs to be clearer, otherwise it's just "I like this game, because I like it".

I would like to see a list of the most innovative FPS's.

Odd though, that they'd snuff GTA3 for a little known game, but allow Wolf3D to eclipse Catacombs3D and Ultima Underworld. Meh, not like it's CNN reporting but a bit of consistancy would be nice.

I even edited my own Wolf3D maps and made my own DOOM maps.

Actually, I should share my two DOOM 2 mod recordings on here. What do you guys think? I don't know if they will get enough votes though.

I now feel old... I had a 386i on loan from my dads job back in the day. I could barely play DOOM if i minimized the screed to stamp-size, full screen was like 2 frames a minute. in DOOM 1.. So I ended up playing wolf3D, must have finished that game like 20 times... I saved up some cash and got myself a 486 DX66 later, played DOOM like a DREAM, aaahh, the memories.
