Neal Peart of RUSH discussing LimeLight and vocal timing

chingalera says...

Peart, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker and Kieth Moon have always been my favorites for sheer energy in execution, improvisation, and texture. John Bonham was fun to listen to and watch, too. Surprisingly, I sat mesmerized by Charlie Watts at this show in 79' in Dallas where the band was Page, Clapton, and Beck all jamming with Entwistle on bass and Watts on drums. He looks like a tax collector sitting there but busts out an incredible envelop of rhythm with the precision of a Swiss timepiece on a minimalist kit.

The wobbly beam of the Vela pulsar

deathcow says...

This image probably shows illumiunation effects which appear to move faster than light speed. It is an illusion only of course.

Imagine if you took a coffee can and cut a slice out of one side. Next, put a quadrillion watt light bulb inside it, and start to spin the can once per second.

It spins the light beam around like a lighthouse does. If you move far enough away from the can, the moving pattern of shadow and light from the can will move faster than light speed.

Several astronomy "motion" videos like this illustrate super-luminal light effects like that.

Solar Roadways

newtboy says...

I call shenanigans.
Let's do some math...
5 billion panels at approximately $10K each at (far less than) today's prices for regular home panels which may be as low as $500 each when on sale, purchased in bulk, and discontinued models (note his panels are 12'x12', which is approximately 15-20 normal size panels spliced together) This means JUST the panels for his idea would cost over $50 TRILLION (at the insane discount price I described). This does not include instalation (labor and hardware), inverters, wireing, transmission, super-glass coating, heater, LED setup, .... All this is usually at least 2/3 -3/4 the cost of a solar system without super-glass, so lets be stupidly kind again and say his system can be put together at the same cost per watt as a cheap home system (which is insanity, it would cost 10 times that per watt or per square foot at least, probably more like 100 times with the super glass), that comes to >$150 TRILLION. Then you need to completely redesign cars (even the already electrics) to capture and use the electricity, another huge, ignored cost of this system. Just an educated guess, it seems like a realistic number for this entire nation wide system would likely be well over $3000Trillion. Get real.
Also, in what world are most roadways not shaded, it's not the one I live in.
And I guess we won't be driving at night anymore, or should we spend another $100-$1000 trillion to line the roadways with batteries?
They answer the comment 'you'll just slip off when it's wet' with 'it's nearly as stong as steel'. ? Perhaps they think sliding off the road is fine, I don't.
They imply they think they're system is cheaper than asphalt, or soon will be. That's just plain wrong under the best (or worst) of circumstances.
The entire 'pressure plate' idea is just stupid, it ignores the energy used to push the plate down, which is the same as constantly climbing a steep hill, or really more like constantly driving up stairs.
Get your broom people.

Ever try tricking the boiler/heater - Peep Show

BoneRemake says...

In what way ?

Hot water radiators (possibly the type in this skit) are powered by circulating hot water from a boiler. the water only gets to a certain temperature and then is dispursed through the pipes of the building.

The water stops flowing when the room itself/thermometer registers that the air temperature is what you want it to be.

The water/radiator does not heat up quicker if you jack the temperature on the dial, the water just flows longer to heat the air up longer. The water is at a constant temperature, unless you have a shit boiler/water heater.

Electrics might be different, well they are actually when they have settings like 500 watt 1000 watt and 1500 watt settings. But in apartments it all depends on what the thermostat reads.

Now I wonder if your comment was facetious...

Sarah Palin Insults Obama's Penis after Libya Embassy Attack

MilkmanDan says...

Do I think that Sarah Palin is a low-watt bulb that would be terrible in any position of significant government power? Yes.

Do I think that this particular comment is obviously a crass, tasteless "dick joke" as suggest by Cenk here? No.

Frankly, there are abundant opportunities to rationally criticize Sarah Palin, but this one seems like a stretch to me.
