Inside the World's Most Dangerous Amusement Park

SDGundamX says...

OMG nostalgia! I lived not even 20 minutes from there when I was a kid. I almost got killed in the parking lot there on the 4th of July once when a firework exploded right after launch and sent fiery fragments out into the crowd (one of them smashed the windshield of the car next to me). I also remember totally wanting to go on the Cannonball loop but my parents wouldn't let me (in hindsight probably a good decision on their part).

Motorworld there was awesome--it was across the street from Action Park and I think run by the same people. They had these cage-enclosed go-karts tanks equipped with compressed-air tennis ball cannons and sensors that stopped the tanks temporarily if they got hit by a tennis ball. You could pay to drive the tanks around inside an enclosed arena or you could also shoot at the tanks from the outside of the arena using air-cannon turrets that required quarters to operate. Tons of fun.

Mostly, though, I went to the water park, which according to Wikipedia had the most casualties. I got a fair amount of scrapes from the waterslides and I can totally see how people could get seriously injured on some of them.

Looks remarkably closely related to a homemade zipline. You know, like the one that snapped and infected that poor girl with flesh-eating bacteria?
I think I'll pass...rusty metal and standing water just isn't a good combination.

We used to not care about that kinda stuff. But then again my dads friend drowned while swimming in the old quarry...so who knows who's right?

I know...my friends and I didn't either. And there aren't as many of us as there used to be. In several cases, there's a direct causal relationship in that statement, too. It's only taken us 40-50 years to realize that we are indeed mortal.

I think it's sad...I recently bought a motorcycle and upon doing my homework I discovered that most fatalities now occur because of chest and spine trauma, not head trauma because of helmets. So I asked for my birthday to get a vest full of pads over the chest and stomach and a large back plate like a turtle shell. I bought this old motorcycle because I remember my dads old motorcycle, which I rode around with him at the age of 4 with no helmet at all. It's crazy to think about.

Can you say injury lawsuit?

Goddamn lawyer planet. I hate earth. In the future being awesome is too costly. And that's why all of our playgrounds are made out of plastic and not metal. We really need to stop trying to minimize injury. What's left of our survival instincts will soon be gone to make way for our alien overlords or the zombie apocalypse. And when it comes, we'll be to soft to deal with it and the entire race will be mopped up.

I've loved this song ever since hearing it for the first time as I exited the splash pool of my favorite waterslide when I was a kid. I can't hear this song without being taken back to that day -- so thank you.
