Lightning Bolt - Whoa that was close!

It's Hard Being a Smoker!

Theres a raido commercial on a station i listen to. Its an ad for the smoke assassin and its pretty much this packaged in a fancy radio ad. You puff out water vapor, but seriously it still sounds like a bad/dumb idea.

Will a cannonball float in mercury?

qruel says...

obscenesimian, I wanted to share with you the response I got in regards to the rising mercury vapor.

First, the reason the vapors are rising is due to the air current provided to make them do so. Otherwise they would fall and could not be visualized as easily. This is just good photography.

The reasons we know this is mercury vapor is the following:

1. What else could it be coming distinctly from the amalgam? Tin, Copper, silver and zinc do not vaporize into gases like mercury does.
2. Others say it is water but the amalgams are dry. Also, water does not absorb the UV light (a mercury vapor lamp) as does mercury vapor. In other words, water vapor does not absorb the UV light, if it did we could not do UV spectrometry in water solutions which is very common place in biochemical research.
3. In the class I taught at the University of Kentucky called “Mercury, Science and Politics” the students did the ‘smoking tooth’ experiment. While doing this they used the mercury vapor analyzer from the OSHA office to measure mercury levels in the mouths of each other (some with and some without amalgams). During the smoking tooth experiment the students were directed to place the intake of the mercury analyzer into the ‘smokey release’ and test it for mercury. There was absolutely no doubt, the meter on the mercury analyzer showed the vapor was mercury. Heat the amalgam and the amount of vapor visualized increased and the analyzer meter increased also.

Rep. John Shimkus: God decides when the "earth will end"

quantumushroom says...

Right-wing prejudice against greenies? Get real. A full THIRD of all federal regulations are environmental regs. We're not talking about a few recycling bins here but the systematic destruction of the free market, which has protected resources through private property ownership way better than some bureaucrat deciding you can't cut down a tree on your own property.

When green fanatics announce that "all GW debate is over", compare their opponents to "Holocaust deniers" and rush to pass still more wealth and freedom-destroying legislation before it can be debated, what else can "man-made" GW be but a hoax?...a hoax perpetrated by government force. TIME IS RUNNING OUT is the mantra of the used car salesman.

It's embarrassing that so many otherwise 'rational' people would suddenly link millions of years of natural global warming and cooling cycles to a few centuries of industry, as if THE SUN plays no role in earth not being a ball of ice. (measuring by the cycles we're LONG overdue for another ice age).

Now greenvangelicals are trying to declare water vapor and carbon dioxide TOXIC and in need of regulation. There's no end to these power grabs and no limits to the human lust for power and other emotional defects from which the atheist naively declares immunity.

"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."

Jet flying less than the FFA-approved distance from objects

joedirt says...

Probably video editting.

It was travelling WAY too slowly to be supersonic. Just look at the scale of the boats. I'm guessing it was either some jet boat editted, or else the water vapor above the lake was being vaporized around teh jet flames/low pressure?

MUST SEE Richard Dawkins Interview

quantumushroom says...

We need Oxford C-3PO to tell us politics and religion influence American science?

You could say the same thing about the government-paid shills who claim secondhand smoke is "deadly" and greenvangelicals who think water vapor in the atmosphere is heating up Mother Earth at unnatural alarming rates.

Religion will still be with us hundreds of years after Dawkins is dust. And the nations with the most numbers of faithful will in turn be the strongest and therefore evolutionary winners.

Plane explodes due to deathspin

SDGundamX says...

Here's the full story:

http://xmb.stuffucanuse.com/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=2971

If you just want the highlights, the pilot of this craft, LCMD John Stacy Bates failed to take appropriate action after his engine stalled, causing the craft to go into an uncontrollable spin (sounds eerily like Top Gun). Both he and his RIO ejected safely and were recovered by the ship from which this video is taken. The explosion was likely caused by a part of the engine coming loose from the force of the spin and piercing the fuel tank in the process.

Incidentally, Bates later was killed along with his RIO in another F-14 accident that also killed several people on the ground in Tennessee.

Also, he is not breaking the sound barrier in this video. The ring you see is caused by water vapor being pushed away from the aircraft (see thread here: http://forum.ebaumsworld.com/showthread.php?t=39693). That's why you see the ring form and disappear multiple times.

The second page of that thread has some interesting comments from the Navy Air Traffic Controller on duty at the time of this vid's accident.

Doesn't look like it went supersonic, almost, but not quite.

Don't know about you, but my indication for whether something's gone over the sound barrier usually is the sound it makes

hahaha! Well this is one of the rare cases where you can see it as well as the vapor is an indication that the compressed air hasn't pushed its way off the tail of the plane causing the boom your talking about

Is Al Gore Telling an Inconvenient Lie?

thinker247 says...

I'm not sure whether to agree or disagree with the points made in this video, because I don't know anything about climatology. However, I don't like when they showed Al Gore stating that 97 percent of greenhouse gases are water vapor, then felt the need to repeat it, but didn't show the rest of his speech. It felt like a Bible quotation being cut short in order to prove a point that would be dropped if the rest of the chapter or verse was read.

That being said, I still like the idea of people conserving energy and finding alternative energy sources, so the "inconvenient truth" is more about inconveniencing Americans in order to curtail our waste of resources. A magician's trick to focus attention elsewhere, surely, but maybe a necessary one?
