Bernstein Promises Bloodshed If Dems Try To Impeach Trump

Nerdwriter: What Made Darth Vader Visually Iconic

Sagemind says...

He forgot things like the mask itself, the look and design of it.

He didn't mention the control panel on his chest, that made us wonder if he was human or machine or how much of each.

He didn't mention the Imperial March which framed the dark presence of Vader when he came on screen. Star Wars was the first movie to use a full Soundtrack to emote the feel of everything and control the viewers emotions as they watched...
(Jaws was the first to use the sound in this way, but Star Wars was the first to use the Orchestra.

HL2 WOLFENSTEIN Source Remake - Full Walkthrough

00Scud00 says...

Honestly I spent more time playing the original Wolfenstein than Wolf 3D, those endless blue corridors got boring real fast for me.
Also, Thot is a short for That Hoe Over There and seems to be a derogatory term for women who use sex to get viewers on their Twitch or Youtube channels. I'd downvote this, but I'm not cool enough.

Obama vs Trump: Fox News Hypocrisy on North Korea

SaNdMaN says...

Totally didn't see this coming! /s

And yet, somehow, a typical Fox News viewer would look at this clear evidence and still claim there's no bias.

It's really depressing, at this point. It's like they love being bullshitted.

Melania Slaps Down Giuliani. As Does Pompeo

MilkmanDan says...

OK, the actual statement made by Melania's camp (as seen on screen at 1:10):
"I don't believe Mrs. Trump has ever discussed her thoughts on anything with Mr. Giuliani."

That's a pretty significant nudge. To me, pretty clearly says "don't put words in my mouth". You can infer it as "don't put words in my mouth, you weaselly little prick", but the statement itself is pretty carefully reserved in the exact wording.

Newsworthy? Sure. But to me, I think a good journalist (and I'd usually include Anderson Cooper in that camp) should show the statement itself, without any opinion or commentary first, and then make a distinct segue showing that we're now moving into pundit's reactions and opinions.

The lead here was "First Lady Melania Trump's Office Fires Back at Rudy Giuliani Over His Remarks About Stormy Daniels". That just seems a bit clickbait-y to me. "Fires Back" requires reading between the lines of the statement itself. Accurate? Probably. But I think they should have honored the carefully worded nature of the actual statement and gone with something like ..."Responds to" instead of "Fires Back".

Furthermore, they should have kept the full text of the statement itself up on the screen during the whole reaction/opinion portion segment where Cooper and the other talking heads discuss things. By all means, discuss. I even mostly agree with their interpretations and take on the situation. But keep the text of the actual statement up so that viewers can decide for themselves.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was actually fantastic for hoisting people on their own petard by fairly and accurately showing their actual statements and reacting to them -- no bait and switch / obfuscation necessary. Stewart's kind of subtlety in pointing out contradictions and bullshit was awesome.

I guess I feel like the best response to Trump's "Fake News" shtick is to be doubly rigorous when it comes to journalistic integrity. Trump's gonna give you plenty of ammo to use against him. Use it, but do it in such a way that any allegations of bias or unfairness are clearly wrong.

In Saturn's Rings 8K (Narrated by LeVar Burton) 2018 Trailer

wtfcaniuse says...

It's entirely down to viewing distance and the viewer's vision. 4k is pointless at "normal" viewing distances. Whereas you need something like 16k to match visual acuity in VR. Unless you're simply interested in screen real estate.

kir_mokum said:

even as a file, it would probably chug here and there, depending on the compression and how beefy your machine is. 8K is fucking HUGE and SO unnecessary unless you have an imax theatre in your living room.

Anatomy of a Scene -- A Quiet Place

mentality says...

I didn't really like the movie. Certain parts of it was well done, but there are some glaring issues that ruined my suspension of disbelief.

For example, early in the movie we got a shot of John's character's workshop, and there's this whiteboard with the most basic information about the monsters written on it in large bold letters. Your character has masterfully survived for over a year under constant threat from these monsters, and you have to write down that the creatures are blind? Who is this even for other than the audience? It's such a lazy way of conveying information and disrepectful of your viewer's intelligence.

Also, the ending was pretty ridiculous.

*spoiler warning*

The fact that these monsters are susceptible to small firearms (even if they have ARMOR as the whiteboard reminds us) makes the premise that they overran all the world's militaries in a few months pretty unbelievable.

2 Convicted of rape. One gets 6 months the other 15 years

Mordhaus says...

I don't think any prosecutor wants to be the first one to put a person of non-Caucasian ethnicity on the stand for a hate crime, even when it clearly should have been counted as one.

That said, Turner was most likely under-sentenced. Not 'just' because he was white, but because he was from a rich family. In addition, he was lucky because, at the time, California law did not consider digital penetration rape. If you did not penetrate the woman's body with your penis, the most they could charge you with was assault with the intent. They also managed to tack on sexual penetration by a 'foreign' object.

On the other hand, you have a gang rape that there was photo and video evidence of. Evidence that showed that the defendant mentioned in the video not only participated in the rape, but urinated on the victim and told her "That was for 400 years of slavery, you bitch."

Finally, this is a hot issue. There will always be disagreements. @C-note linked a high rated video featuring someone we would 'expect' to be racist, due to stereotyping, confirming that racism still does exist and that racial privilege does as well. I agree that there are still racist issues in our society, although I personally feel we are moving more towards privilege based on monetary worth than racial worth. However, the simple fact of the matter is, this video is playing hard AND loose with the facts to skew the opinion of the viewer. A lot of videos do that. One of the good things about the sift is they WILL call people out on it, usually gently at first but with more force if it is repeated.

Batey, aggravated rape and other (unlisted) charges...I think not hate crimes because....well, no reason, this was a clear hate crime, but he wasn't charged as such or sentenced for the other convictions..... Black privilege?
Tennessee-Class A Felony - 15-60 years in prison and a fine not more than $50,000 (aggravated rape, rape of a child)
"There were five acts of sexual assault and rape committed by [Batey] and him alone, and there were seven acts of violence he was found guilty of committing against me.
But sexual assault was not where the attack ended."
They also kidnapped her to take her unconscious body to the raping place.

Turner, 3 cases of felony sex assault for one act. It seems the prosecutor was asking for 1/2 the max of 12 years.
Felony Sexual Battery: This has a range of punishments. The defendant could receive a term of imprisonment in county jail for up to 1 year and a fine of up to $2,000. However, California state laws also allows for imprisonment for 2, 3, or 4 years as well as a fine of up to $10,000.

Keep in mind, different states have different laws and sentences.

Ex-Abu Ghraib Prisoner Speaks Out On Abuse

RFlagg says...

Controversial because Trump and all his supporters, all Fox News viewers, and many if not most GOP members, love this treatment of Muslims. They see nothing wrong with it and think it should come back. They think it is an effective method of stopping terrorism, this is what they are told on Fox all the time. So some think it is great, we need to bring it back and apparently what Jesus would do, while most of us think it is a horrific as it is.

makach said:

how come this is tagged controversial? what is controversial about this. This is just terrible, horrible and a FACT that we all need to be better than this. Any human being must resist performing this torture.

The Diversity of Local Independent News

RedSky says...

From: http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/07/media/sinclair-broadcasting-promos-media-bashing/index.html

The instructions for producing and airing the localized versions went into great detail about how the promos "should look and sound," according to another document obtained by CNN.

"Talent should dress in jewel tones -- however they should not look political in their dress or attire," one of the documents says. "Avoid total red, blue and purples dresses and suits. Avoid totally red, blue and purple ties, the goal is to look apolitical, neutral, nonpartisan yet professional. Black or charcoal suits for men...females should wear yellow, gold, magenta, cyan, but avoid red, blue or purple."

At the end of the promo, viewers are encouraged to send in feedback "if you believe our coverage is unfair."

The instructions say that "corporate will monitor the comments and send replies to your audience on your behalf."

In other words, local stations are cut out of the interactions with viewers. Management will handle it instead.

Honest Trailers - Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Sagemind says...

I'm going to be honest here.

I'm really tired of these. I've just lost my tolerance for negativity. The whole internet is one big Negafest. Whining and complaining about everything. Life is so much more. (I'm also guilty of being negative on the internet.) it's a place people come to fling poo in order to make themselves feel better because of all the crap in RL, a virtual retreat instead of just improving their lives.

Also, I'm just tired of people complaining about how movies aren't the way "the viewer would have done it." I mean lets also be honest about this. You can't mind-read everything and create movies based on a committee of EVERYONE. People need to learn how to watch and listen and appreciate someone Else's creativity.

Rant ended.. I feel better (irony complete)

Faceswapping, Unethical Videos, and Future Shock

entr0py says...

My personal prediction is that it will in the next 10 years get good enough to fool casual viewers. But society will adapt by recognizing that video needs to be verified, and any trustworthy media outlet will need to employ forensic video experts to verify clips.

We already do this with photos. No one thinks that even good photoshops of celebrity heads on porn stars are real. Or that photographic evidence that Hillary Clinton is a lizard person is likely to check out. I mean other than Alex Jones.

If you don't know who Matthew Silver is:

"My role as a clown, trickster and village idiot is to parody excessive seriousness by playing with taboos, rules, and social norms. My inspiration comes from my heart. I perform for smiles and laughter, loosening people’s armor, and opening up a portal for imagination, creativity and love.

Some people see me as a raving lunatic, pompous “artistic” hipster, or attention-starved 9 year-old, but people don’t consciously understand the role of a clown in society. Read between the lines and you will start to see things from a different perspective. By breaking down boundaries, I provide you, the viewer, with permission to open your mind and realize it’s okay to act silly from time to time. We may trick ourselves into believing we know everything, constantly striving for perfection in a society that requires a civilized, job-holding, serious individual. We cannot be perfect. If we allow ourselves the chance to be flawed perhaps we can let the obstacles humble us, rather than make us rigid. In the end we can let our guards down to attain our most basic need of giving and receiving love."
