That Time You Were Completely Unaware A Bear Was Chasing You

artician says...

If anyone is interested, the bear sound effects you've been talking about come from the Series 6000 sound effects collection.

I've recognized common sound effects going back as far as the 80's, so in the early 2000's I got determined to hunt a few of them down and find out why they were so pervasive.
Those of you recognizing the bear here would be equally familiar with the screeching falcon and "dragon" roar (griffins/dragons from WC2, along with every other dragon/hawk sfx in most games everywhere), the sci-fi power-door, and the magic/fireball explosion (doom, pretty much all of doom came from this effects CD).

I am really, really tempted to make a Series6000 tribute video. I own the Series 6000 collection myself (You can get it for ~$1000 online now a days), and use it in nearly every project.

For now, I've sifted the original sample video the company uses for their promotional stuff, but I don't know if qualifies as *Related=http://videosift.com/video/All-Hail-The-General-Sound-Effects-Library-Series-6000

Kristen Schaal recreates Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn

ulysses1904 says...

What am I missing, it looks like just another mash-up parody tribute copy and paste pop culture melange with extended close up shots of people's faces. In other words it looks like 1001 other videos that are only a click away. The original video for "Torn" from 20 years ago was painfully bad so beyond me why anyone would want to copy and paste that one for starters.

Gaga for Bowie

kingmob says...

I only saw the Bowie perform live with nails so all I have is video reference and the stories.

It's a decent tribute.

And I'm okay with the Lady Gaga...she is more talented than Spears was.

The Dukes of Stratosphear - 25 O'Clock

NicoleBee says...

Man. I've had this song forever, labelled as a They Might Be Giants song. I got it from the age of mistitled Napster mp3's.

Edit: Oops -
"On the tribute album A Testimonial Dinner: The Songs of XTC, American alternative rock band They Might Be Giants contributed a cover version of "25 O'Clock"."

WELL THEN

How many album covers can you name?

ulysses1904 says...

I got about 15 just for the challenge, but to me this is just another example of pop culture eating its own feces. Apparently all that's left is unoriginal gimmicky derivative tributes samples homages parodies remakes sequels, etc. I blame Tarantino.

At least "iconic" wasn't used anywhere in the description.

Danny Elfman - From New Wave Band To Film/TV Composer

ulysses1904 says...

I was a big fan of Boingo since the moment I heard "Stay" back in 1986. I drove from Connecticut to Detroit on a weekend to see them because my sister had an extra ticket. Check out their last song "Change" on their last CD, an epic 16 minute tribute to the Beatles and just about everything else.

Glad to see Elfman is still going strong.

"Some of the guys aren't even remotely smiling" Amy rocks it

bareboards2 says...

@Mordhaus I don't know if your comment was quasi-directed at me. I'm going to pretend it was.

I was awkward in my phrasing, but I was actually doing a tiny little survey.

My question really is -- IF YOU ARE A FEMINIST, are you more likely to find Amy funny? IF YOU ARE AWARE OF THE BODY AND SEXUALITY ISSUES OF WOMEN, are you more likely to find Amy funny?

I don't know if Ulysses is male or female for sure. It is just a guess that that avatar and that name makes that person male.

I have a gender neutral name and my avatar is a tribute to my father who died two months ago. So you can't tell my gender from the information presented here.

And you are absolutely right. Funny is what is funny to you.

I'm just curious who "you" is and if it might have a bearing on whether or not Amy is funny to you.

Tina Fey thinks she is funny. Tina Fey is a feminist. All the people I know who like her are feminists.

I was just asking.

Daredevil Should Be Named Batman

poolcleaner says...

No, the Black Panther is the real Batman of the Marvel Universe. Ultra rich, has cool gadgets, cool vehicles (the quinjet, among other vehicles which could themselves topple all of the governments of the world), and his costume looks like Batman, including the colors black and yellow.

Issue #23 of the Black Panther run in the late '90s even takes this to its logical conclusion when they enter Nightmare's universe and they pay tribute to the likeness of Black Panther to Batman.

The Robin character is Black Panther's US attache, Everett Ross. Totally funny too, because the villain around this time is akin to the Joker and has his own tribute panels to the Joker.

These similarities are on purpose.

And for funsies, who is Logan Wayne?
