Virus / Malware creators need to die (Blog Entry by burdturgler)

jwray says...

Which browser were you using? Did you have ActiveX / Javascript / Java disabled? (They should all be completely disabled unless you really trust the website you're on). It's not even safe to enable any Javascript on some trusted websites that have unreliable screening for advertisers (like TPB, which had some browser-hijacking javascript in ads lately). Never had problems with google ads though. Java opens up even more vulnerabilities than Javascript.

Videosift works fine with Java disabled and the most restrictive Javascript options you can select in Firefox without completely disabling javascript. That setup works fine for most of my browsing. Then if I go to any domain I haven't been to before and completely trust, I make sure to disable Javascript first.

Java should not enabled under ANY circumstances except when you have a specific need to use it on a very trusted site, and it should be disabled as soon as you're done.

Before today I had not heard of Global Gaming Factory X, and since they are offering (not finalized) to spend 8mil for TPB, now I have.

If they have a way to monetize that awareness, they can probably make out on the deal, even if they just mothball the site.

This is a pure publicity stunt, if GGF thinks they are going to make money with TPB, they are smoking crack.

Now TorrentFreak reports that:

Pirate Bay’s Peter Sunde has informed TorrentFreak that the site will soon decentralize and stop running a BitTorrent tracker of its own. Instead they will encourage their users to use a yet to be launched third party tracker for their torrents.

To decentralize TPB even further, the torrents that will be listed on the site wont be hosted on The Pirate Bay’s servers anymore. In the near future the site will use a new torrent hosting service that will store the torrents for them. This new hosting service will be open to other torrent sites as well and can be accessed through an API.

Decentralization is always a good thing in these matters, but would they please not dump all of this on me at once ... bloody hell.

Pirate Bay: Guilty

You're talking to somebody who produced a game which showed up on TPB days before official release (got leaked from the distributors-but everyone involved in the making of said game was glad for the extra popularity).
So yeah, like MaxWilder said, don't assume.

Less then half a percent of all the folks that are downloading them illegally off p2p networks actually have the financial means to buy those games.

Oh, I see. It's okay to steal stuff if you can't afford it.
You guys just don't get it because you have never made anything that was pirated. Your viewpoint is from the pirate side.

Also, I completely dig the current TPB heading:
"Don't worry - we're from the internets. It's going to be alright. :-)"

I was discussing this with a friend and a few good questions came up -

1. Can they post bail?
2. Can they appeal? [Edit] - Actually, yes they can.
3. Why were they charged in the first place? From what I read, TPB founders hid their servers out of Sweden months ago after being raided. In fact, if I remember correctly, even they do not know where they are.

Stealing is still stealing. It's all about intent.

I think you misunderstand the precedent and use of the law in this case. The Pirate Bay, and other torrent sites, neither steal computer files, nor maintain possession of such stolen "goods." They merely act as a catalog for user provided links (torrents) to the user held sequences of zeros and ones (files).

Suing The Pirate Bay for copyright infringement (theft) is like suing the phone book for prostitution because of "escort service" listings.

Just because Google's search engine can be used to find child pornography does not mean that Google is guilty of child pornography.

As such, it is not illegal to advertise "escort services" or catalog ASCII character combinations (words) even if they link to illegal or illicit material. No LAW exists to prohibit such an exchange, so no law could have been broken. If Sweden were to cave into the pressure of American media conglomerates and amend their laws to make cataloging words, and telephone directories, in the country illegal then TPB could be in real trouble, but that juncture is a ways off yet.

So Battlestar Galactica is Over. Thoughts? (Scifi Talk Post)
