Hydraulic Press Folds Paper 7 Times

transmorpher says...

I think I've watched the first Terminator movie too many times. Each time I heard that press move down, all I could think about was Sarah Connor pulling her legs out of a metal press just in time to crush the crawling endoskeleton.

Higher minimum wage, or guaranteed minimum income?

radx says...

Beats me.

Organized mass movement, probably. You're not just dealing with an elite who has very little interest in such things, but also a public who has been, for a lack of a better word, conditioned to be suspicious of everything that breaks with existing structures. Given how many people dislike their jobs, you can't even blame them for assuming that no work will get done if there's an alternative in the form of an UBI. International treaties and trade deals are just the icing on top.

But again, who knows. I sure as hell don't. Been proven wrong too many times to have any claims to wisdom.

People are awesome -- Fighter pilots [2015 edition]

I know, I know.
Too much and too many times.

We can wish that more musicians would find that spark and give us more special music, eh?

And it's one of the reasons I'm not upvoting this.

Daybreak and then fucking Sail?

FFS, in a video like this, where you're compositing other people's footage, you have two spaces to add your own take: the editing and the music. The editing is workmanlike, certainly nothing special and for the music they pick the two most overplayed pieces of music on the internet?

Down vote.

People are awesome -- Fighter pilots [2015 edition]

SFOGuy says...

This is a side light, but one of the reasons why I like the score to the first 5" of the video (Daybreak by Overwerk), even though I've heard it too many times (GoPro anyone?), is that it has dynamics to its structure; quiet (pianissimo) to loud (forte), constrained within its rhythms. Honestly, what makes me go crazy is music that never varies.

Oh, and jets. Lots of jets. That's good.

Jimmy Carr Destroys Hecklers and Bad Gifts

scheherazade says...

I'm sure he'll be all right should he ever read my casual observations.

I will yield the point that the internet ruins jokes for comedians.
Someone records a live performance, puts it online, everyone online hears the joke, then that joke is already 'old' in any subsequent live performance (even if that venue has never experienced that joke first hand).

No one can be expected to have a 100% new act every time they perform. In all fairness, my second critical point in my OP (heard the joke too many times) was not necessary.

Lighten up mate, no one's taking notes, he's right in the spotlight and he's got to do something.. Right there, under pressure with all eyes on him and expectant, he didn't lose his wits and that's pretty much enough for the crowd to go for - they're already wired up because he's put the effort in to make them primed to laugh. I bet you're under 28 and you've never put yourself voluntarily into that kind of focus, where it matters.. you'd be surprised how hard it is just to be yourself, never mind be funny for someone else.

Or you could be one of the few it comes naturally to, and you should go make something of yourself and i should shut up.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on genetically modified food

Stormsinger says...

My own biggest issue with GMO's is that the people in the FDA who approved them, are in almost all cases employed by the same companies that created them. In some cases, they are the exact same people. In other words, those who have a financial interest in selling them cannot be trusted to be honest. They've proven that too many times.

There's also the fact that this approach does not lead to a sustainable system. Increased resistance to roundup only causes ever-greater use of roundup, which leads to more roundup resistant weeds, which starts the whole cycle over again. This has already been demonstrated over the last decade, but is consistently ignored by GMO proponents.

Are You a Feminist? And Do You Know What That Means?

Shepppard says...

I'm not a "Feminist" I am, and forever shall remain an "Equalist". Enough with this "Lets fix one problem at a time" bullshit, Race, gender, stature, age, everyone deserves the same rights, why don't we try to push forward for the betterment of everybody?

My biggest complaint about Feminism is basically how misunderstood the goal actually is by some, to the point where it gets waved around like a banner for college girls saying that their sex is superior (Think basically Britta from community personified.)

I've just been called an ass too many times by the *feminists in my last paragraphs to actually call myself by that name anymore, but I think Equalist suits my personal beliefs better anyway.

*=I use the term "feminist" in this sense as the ones who more hinder the cause than help it by making themselves obnoxious.

Matt Damon defending teachers

VoodooV says...

necroposting...deal with it.

Is it even possible to objectively define what a shitty teacher is? Or is a shitty teacher anyone who gives your perfect special child a bad grade?

Parents and teachers used to be on the same side, but it seems parents have completely bought into the idea that their kid is perfect so whenever a teacher might realistically grade them and knock their ego down a peg....suddenly that's a shitty teacher.

There are just too many times where "shitty teacher" seems to only mean "this person made me think and I don't like that"

Test scores don't seem to be a good measure too mostly because standardized tests seem to suck. Maybe measure how much grades have improved? or does that just incentivise the teacher to give easy tests.

Stephen Fry Confesses 2012 Suicide Attempt

Quboid says...

The attitude Stephen Fry refers to of "he's got it all, why is he unhappy?" is something I've heard rather too many times and shows such a poor understanding of the situation. That's the point. He's got it all yet he's unhappy - hence, it's an illness. If you're unhappy when you have reason to be unhappy, that's normal and healthy.

@cluhlenbrauck, how do you know he didn't set these goals? I know he's lost a lot of weight in the last few years, that suggests he did has done this. It's not just a case of setting goals.

Islamophobia

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's something that can't be repeated too many times."

Even if that opinion is completely irrational.

48 - and counting - sharia courts in the UK, and muslims recently given the right to conduct their own divorces. They have no intention of integrating into the society or the laws/practices of the host country. A birth rate outstripping that of the indigenous populace of countries they have "settled" by so much, that it is estimated the whole of Europe will be muslim in 50-75 years (Gaddafi himself said; "All we have to do is wait"). Islam is not simply a religion, it is a theocracy, and its followers are intent on inflicting its medieval practices on the world. As for "moderate" muslims; when was the last time they marched en-masse to denounce the barbaric practices carried out in their name? Is islam something to fear? Damn right it is.Christopher Hitchens said, many times, that if we don't wake up soon, it will be too late.

What To Do While Waiting For Police

chingalera says...

I take offense at the assumptions you made here and on several other posts, assumptions you seem fine with that help to define your presence online-I come off as a terse, bitter asshole on certain offerings here often due to the slanted banter but mostly when my smug meter pegs the red too many times after reading smegma like,

"So they need skills like this to walk around and shoot up rapists?

"Knowing how to walk around and shoot stationary targets is not that useful in real world situation...unless you are walking through a school shooting up kids laying on the ground".

"you gun crazies"

"these delusional gun crazies"

"Did you get those stats from NRA's PR department?"

"Ok, i'll bite your troll bain"

Your comments on threads that take offense at the direction of Congress on this issue sound EXACTLY like the creature Feinstein as she clucks and embarrasses herself daily in these hearings regarding another ineffectual attempt to standardize worldwide, the availability of boomsticks of any kind to citizens anywhere-I have been watching the slow train-wreck of U.S. politics for 40 years with the help of the massive disinformation/indoctrination mechanism of the media machine.....it's offensive, as are those living in an insular and idyllic world of fantasy and delusion, not unlike yours.

Especially detest the smug, holier-than-thou bullshit tone (as I have stated hundreds of times before when someone crawled-up my ass on this site), and ESPECIALLY on issues of police vs. citizenry, firearms, and left vs. right (two meaningless labels that have nothing to do with the mechanism of how the game really works).

I am happy to remain a voice crying in the wilderness here but I won't take asshole or douchebag lying down- ...I am a very gracious, and reasonable person otherwise-

I promoted this video for Buck, a recent addition to the users here, because the issue is fundamentally connected to the reason the U.S. is still here and get's swept aside in favor of kitty-cats, Russian car wrecks, and people fucking themselves up....

Oh, and because I like the cut of Buck's jib-I regard ANY new user who actually embeds videos here, votes and comments who offers an alternative to the regular fare here a breath of fresh, fucking air-

You appear to me to be another person deluded by their own world view enough to use labels, stereotype (which you have obviously done with myself) cry racism, or employ a similar tactic when faced with common sense or reason colliding with your ideals. It's sophomoric and offensive and unimpressive.

Don't sweat it-If You creep-through my past comments I'm sure you'll find many examples of my own foot-in-mouth-Peace

Further proof of how delusional you gun crazies are. You have no fucking idea on my position on domestic surveillance, warrant-less wiretaps or redefinition of US citizens as terrorists.
As a matter of fact, I guarantee you 1000% that I actually proactively do more to protect YOUR civil liberties against those things than you do by waving your penis-compensator around!

As for "mein freund", wtf is that supposed to mean? Is that a subtle hint at nazis? If so then you are an even bigger fucking idiot than I realized.

But whatever, talking here is obviously pointless. Ignorance is bliss.

First Look Trailer Of Gervais' New Series 'Derek'

probie says...

I got onto a Ricky Gervais kick about 2 years ago. Watched The Office, Extras, listened to all his XFM broadcasts, his audiobooks, Guide To's, watched An Idiot Abroad, etc.. The problem I have with seeing him play Derek is due to the face he makes; I've seen him do that face too many times in other media (Extras as Mr. Stokes for example) so I keep expecting him to break character at any moment with that trademark laugh of his. It's so disconcerting that I have trouble suspending my expectation of it, so that I can actually see and enjoy the character.

I'll watch the show and I'm sure it will be a hit. But I don't think I'll be able to enjoy as much as someone who's new to him.
