GTA V - Announcement Trailer

I agree with you in principle but s**t man, relax. It's only the internets. >> ^jackhalfaprayer:

argumentum ad hominem. it's not my job to do better; it's rockstar's job to do better. we weren't talking about me or anyone else until you changed the subject. i'd say that bethesda has been doing better open world games since the mid-to-late 90's, konami's silent hill series has been better at telling stories (read: making one feel like playing through a movie, which rockstar wishes they could accomplish), and just about any third-person game from tomb raider to max payne has a better 3-rd person targeting system than that broken-ass excuse rockstar has been trying to fix for 10 iterations or so. so pretty much everything that GTA has been mashing up into a huge meaningless sandbox of drivel has been done before in a less broken fashion, with more variety, less linearity, less repetitive gameplay, and without falling back on hopelessly cliche, hackneyed mafioso stereotypes and slipshod driving mechanics.
but if you wanted to give me money to write a game and pay some programmers and artists and designers, absolutely! i'd be happy to present to you a game that is better than anything rockstar has produced to date. until then, fanboy, defend this mediocre studio with some actual points instead an ad hominem logical fallacy... or just stfu about what i or anyone else should be doing better than rockstar. rockstar puts out unoriginal crap with semi-impressive tech and people like you eat it up, bloat their egos, and line the pockets of corporate lackeys that are afraid to do anything new with an old IP. there's better work out there. you must not hear about it because it's not mentioned in your gamepro subscription. so go preorder this re-hash bullshit, and rest ignorant of the knowledge that people like you are destroying this industry, and this community, by buying into the hype machine of some fake gangster-sim crap with nothing new to offer since version III. and don't tell me that I should put up with it because there's nothing better out there, wtf sort of defense is that?

GTA III was the last time there was any innovation in this series. I'm tired of sandbox missions with a half-assed organized crime drama throughline. I'd rather watch Goodfellas or something where there's real writing and acting. Rockstar games are overhyped and underdeveloped.

You...or ANYONE do better. Seriously we've seen other sandbox games try and fail...this is like criticizing WoW for being what it is. Do something better or accept that this is as good as it gets right now and shut up.

Varying Bullet Caliber Damage

Skeeve says...

This is great. People have such warped ideas of guns from Hollywood mythmaking - though a lot of video games don't help either.

I've seen guys come into the range, fire a 9mm for a bit, then brag about how much better the Desert Eagle is. Then a range officer pulls one out and they realize that it's hard for them to hold it steady, let alone fire accurately. A .50 pistol sounds impressive only until you realize that you only have 7+1 rounds, you can't aim for shit, and the recoil is a bitch. As my favorite range officer put it: "Angelina Jolie [a la Tomb Raider] would have trouble carrying one in each hand, but somehow she is firing two on the run?"

Some movies are getting better, more accurately depicting the proper usage of a gun and actually showing reloads, but even my girlfriend starts laughing at some of the more blatant mistakes in action movies (The Green Hornet has some whoppers).

The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies

dannym3141 says...

Things i noticed:

- Isn't it a bit sexist of her to assume that the robots in transformers weren't their equivalent of female?
- Ditto District 9, though we couldn't pronounce their names nor tell if they were conversing.
- I thought there was a bit in watchmen where older/younger silk spectre spoke about something other than a man - at least for a bit.
- The bourne supremacy has 2 named women talking to each other about old assassination missions and capturing a rogue assassin. As does the third one because it follows directly on from the second. Does this qualify as 'talking about a man'? If so, that is a very arbitrary line to be drawn.
- Isn't wall-e about robots?
- Austin Powers are films lampooning the objectifying of women/the wallflower stereotype.
- The wedding singer has the two named sisters talking about the degree of tongue acceptable at weddings. Again, i say that if you can bend the rules to say that is technically 'talking about a man', then you could equally bend them another way in this and other examples.
- ^ Such as X-men where there are many group conversations involving named women. I'm not an expert on those films so i can't say for sure if there's a clear conversation between 2 named women, but group convo's with multiple named women there are.
- Interview with a vampire has a conversation between the child vampire (who is of course a woman trapped in a child's body, this is a big point in the film) and the woman selected to be bitten to be her mother, both are named.

If you make a film based anywhere in history past 50-60 years ago, you're going to hit the culture factor. You can't just manufacture women into places where they wouldn't have been in a time where women were not considered equal. You may as well complain about racism in a film taking place when black people were used in slavery.
- Shawshank
- Pirates
- Gladiator

There are films with a very powerful and strong female protagonist battling against the odds and coming out on top. Some of these films don't even pass the test - how can this be when it's basically saying "Women can be better/stronger than men?"
- GI Jane (vs. GI Joe) - fights against all the odds and eventually shows people how wrong they were.
- Fifth element - she saves him, he saves her, she saves the planet?
- Alien 3
- Tomb Raider
- Arguably 'Wanted'

^ It almost feels like she's mocking her own theory/criticism by naming these films. "Hey look everyone, even films with a super-strong female character kicking everyone's ass and showing how women aren't wallflowers........................is perpetuating the stereotype that women are submissive wallflowers!"

It's almost like naming examples of where the theory fails to be true. Which ...renders the theory useless?

I do think there's a point to be made, but i don't think it's as bad as they want to believe it is, and i certainly don't think that this is demonstrated by the films listed. Show films like pulp fiction, se7en, etc. even fight club. Those convince me. The others make me think "I don't think these people will be happy until we make 2 versions of every film with the sexes mirror'd."

If they can't value the fifth element, alien and tomb raider as films that fight against a stereotype, when exactly are they going to be happy?

Upvote for "you die a lot because the camera's being operated by 8 year old autistic child hooked up to an IV full of sherbert"

The main reason it took me a month to finish the game was I'd get fed up with the horrific camera movement and walk away for days. Note to the TR devs: Make the camera a fixed distance and have it not clip on object, end of problem! Is that so hard, it's been 9 games and you haven't figured that out yet?

Yahtzee may be right that Lara's jublees are the selling point for pubescent males, but I'm in my 30s, I got it because I like the games, and the Crystal Dynamics TR games have been the best of the series.

Hear Hear! I've dabbled with hard core gaming for years, and once I stop playing for any amount of time (like when I have a new born) I can't get back into the franchises/genres that I like. The game industries recent solution to this has been shorter and/or easier games, but I've found those unsatisfying. I don't want to grind in a MMORPG, I want fast paced, skill based game play that doesn't provide so much negative feedback.

I haven't played the new Prince of Persia, and probably never will because of the price tag and the short game play, but I did play Braid, and it was an amazing experience. The puzzles were incredibly tough, but the in-exhaustible time reversal kept the focus on ONE obstacle at a time. Oh, and unlike Yahtzee I LOVED the story(s).

Games like Burn Out are also on the right track (no pun intended), minimizing the set backs and making failure, and therefore risk taking, fun.

I tried the latest Tomb Raider demo. I love the franchise, but after missing that jump from the sliding ramp for the 4th time, I decided it wasn't worth the effort to climb that rock face again (despite the much improved models and animation).

PETA Alert! Lara Croft kicks vicious tigers IN THE FACE

Duckman33 says...

Most likely because Angelina Jolie is no longer the person (model or voice) behind the Tomb Raider character.

Olympic gymnast and NCAA Women's Gymnastics champion Heidi Moneymaker was the model used for motion capturing.

Keeley Hawes will provide the voice of Lara in this installment, as she did in Anniversary and Legend

^ Hmmm, there must be one ... Tomb Raider? no ...

There are movies about video games that were decent. Tron, The Last Starfighter ...

But no, just checked here and you are right. I might give Final Fantasy partial credit for its groundbreaking cgi.

Video Games and Sex (inspired by Zero Punctuation)

mas8705 says...

*If I offend anyone in anyway, I apologize in advance*

If I really wanted to be serious about this issue, I could have a two page essay ready by tomorrow... Of course I'm not going to do that since I want to get my point across within the first paragraph... From how I see it, most of us were born at around the same time games started, and as we grow older, they have been adding more mature stuff... True we enjoy the shooting, the slashing, the blood pouring out of someone like a waterfall, but one thing that has always stur up contreversy has always be the idea of sex, or sex icons...

What this guy said is true for during the time when tomb raider came out, people were more interested in Lara herself than the actual gameplay... It was either two things you always look at her, either look at her butt or her breasts... and since Tomb Raider, that is when I really started to notice all these sex ideas coming up, custer's revenge was just stupid though... Since then and now on systems in which we have the best graphics yet, it seems that we have been focused more on how a game looks rather than how it plays... The parts of where game developers try the "sex sells" and focus on just is that when their game runs into a brick wall and crash and burns when the time comes for it to be released... Just look at all the female characters nowadays... I could name a good handful of characters that have breasts so big, it is almost hard to imagine that they can move, and when they move, it would look like that it bounces all over the place... It is sad that some developers have to go on this path of selling a game due to a woman barely wearing any clothing and for us to buy the game so that we can fully enjoy every time she is laying on the floor with legs spread out...

This guy has the right idea though, video games are about 20-30 years old now, and if you want to sell games, keep with the format that works, and if we ever get to a time sex is ok in games, it should be done at a slow pace and done like the movies, in which there is enough to satify watchers, but not too much for it to be a porno... Till then, games like Mass effect will be considered most offensive, when people barely see what's happening... if that was the case, you would be hearing of a new game making news every month...

Damn you, Angelina Jolie!
