AUTOMATICA 4k - Robots Vs. Music - Nigel Stanford

hamsteralliance says...

CGI rendered tests to further fool you into thinking it's not all CG. It's been done before.

This seems like a job for Captain Disillusion!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify a bit. By CGI I don't just mean it's all 3D renders. I mean more that it's all computer trickery of some sort. Some 3D, some compositing, lots of time manipulation. Just look at how often he's clearly green screened in. Look at how the cymbals move. A robotic arm can punch through a piano? There's a lot of CG going on here. And if it's in the crazier shots, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the simpler shots.

I don't think all of it is. These tests seem like they wouldn't have been done if the whole video is cgi.

Interstellar - Honest Trailers

dannym3141 says...

I enjoyed it. I don't understand many of the criticisms - it's a film, were we somehow expecting to have our humanity validated by it? A scientifically accurate description of a mission would be boring - they'd almost certainly die in the wormhole.

The science wasn't unreasonable. It was a lot closer to reality than anything in star trek or star wars. Anne Hathaway's character muses on the power of love and suddenly it's a force of the universe? My memory might be flawed, but i don't remember hearing anyone confirm that or discuss it - in fact, the state her "lover" was in was kind of contrary to the opinion she gave and certainty to how she felt. We really do have no idea about black holes, either, so for all we know it could be manipulated by some future technology. The tesseract "library" was an interesting take on time travel/time manipulation.

The only thing that broke my suspension of disbelief was the bit when they said they thought they had years of good readings from the water planet due to time dilation. But that doesn't make any sense, because the number of signal pulses sent from the surface must equal the number of signal pulses received in orbit. My best guess is that the pulses would be elongated and have their wavelength shifted, possibly, but one thing i am certain of is that the total number can't be different.

The problem is, the older you get, the more you know about science, the less faith you have to put in films to give you a mind-bending experience that works on so many levels. None of it is plausible, so why rule it out based on what Hathaway thinks about the nature of love, or anything else?

Good film! And funny video. Someone's got to defend it though!

This would only be controversial to idiots. It is like saying look up the sky is currently blue and the grass is currently green. Ohh, (shift-8)controversy.

Just remember we're talking about my beloved U.S. of A where nearly 40% of the people believe human beings were created out of clay by an all powerful vindictive a-hole in his spare time. Manipulation of such folks in a predominantly capitalist system is trivial if you've got the means.

What is the best Super power? (it's not what you think...)

Ghostly says...

By their rules time stopping is not so great.

Time Stop:
If you keep stopping time for everything besides yourself, then you will essentially age faster relative to everyone else. Your biggest mistake would be to regularly use it for long distance psuedo-teleportation...

Full Time Manipulation:
Even full time manipulation may not be considered so great because even if you could selectively turn back time on your body to reverse aging, you wouldn't be able to do it on your brain unless you want to lose any memories/experiences recorded there.

What is the best Super power? (it's not what you think...)

gorillaman says...

There's a GURPS advantage called Sanitized Metabolism, which reads:

"You are totally clean. Your native intestinal enzymes and symbiotic bacteria eliminate your body odor and make efficient use of food and drink, leaving minimal, sanitized waste products. You never suffer from bad breath, excessive perspiration or unsightly skin problems."

Always wished I could put that on my RL character sheet.

That said, there's a strict hierarchy of super powers:

Level 1, God:
Omnipotence
Batman

Level 2, Cosmic:
'Omnipotence'
'Reality' Manipulation
Time Manipulation

Level 3, Rule the World:
Mind Control
'Luck' Manipulation
Kill Anyone
Speed
Magic
Genius
Hyper-Technology

Level 4, Super:
'Luck'
Invulnerability
Healing Factor
Insubstantiality
Invisibility
Teleportation
Telekinesis
etc.

Level 5, Overrated:
Ninja
Flight
Eye Beams
Strength
etc.

Level 6, Worthless:
Aquaman

I spend a lot of time thinking about this.

MaxWilder says...

For the record, I've always thought time manipulation would be the best superpower. So take that, title!

But even if I could only have the power to stop time rather than go forward and back, it would still beat everything else for sheer usefulness in real life.

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday You are being manipulated.

So you are against corporate manipulation of markets, and instead prefer government manipulation? As if a politician is any more caring of your needs than a businessman. PROTIP: nobody with money gives a shit about you. What makes you think corporations have a harder time manipulating politics than they do markets? They don't, ask any CEO if they want a "free market" and they will say hell no. They love government regulations because regulations can be bought and sold as easy as apples at the store.

Your argument is absolutely retarded. Like "I can't believe he went full retard" retarded.

How about a system with NO manipulation...government, corporate, individual or otherwise. When you hear "free" you think "anarchy" that is why your arguments sound so god damn stupid. By "free" we mean "free from manipulation."

Believe whatever you want, I couldn't care less about your views, America, Americans, or any of the "plight" any of the above find themselves in. I couldn't care less about people eating 150lbs of sugar a year who don't have the $50,000 for their cancer, diabetes, and heart disease treatment. If you are too ignorant to google "cancer metabolism" maybe you should be dying on the street. PROTIP: Diseases of civilization are curable; do some research before spending your life savings on toxic pharmaceuticals, you damn sucker.

This country can crash into burning ruins and I wouldn't blink an eye. People who willingly hand over their possessions, independence, and ask to be ruled by others (or supported by others) deserve whatever harsh, pathetic life they receive in return.

Videodrome Channel (the channel with nothing on) (Eia Talk Post)

Great channel idea Chogs. I've submitted plenty of creative and clever videos from regular folk, that have been overlooked because of production values that are less than slick. Power to the peeps.

For anyone looking for channel suggestions, here ya go:

The *Time channel: Time would contain videos that use processes that manipulate time, such as stop motion, time lapse, overcrank/slow motion, fast forward, backwards or any other kind of time manipulation.

The *Weird channel: Dark, Obscure, WTF all contain some weird videos, but it would be nice to have a place that focuses on weird exclusively. It would be a plus if the proprietor was genuinely bonkers as well.

Zero Punctuation Review - Braid

Deano says...

dystopianfuturetoday - the level I'm thinking of doesn't seem to behave that way. The enemy has a key on a platform above me and he is unaffected by any time manipulation so I think it's another world altogether.
Even if it's deliberate I find having to reset the level doesn't sit well with the overall design.
