The Comeback of the Immersive Sim

Deus Ex - Mankind Divided 101

How Fallout Proves Morality Is Arbitrary

shagen454 says...

Fallout 1 & 2 were the motherfucking shit. The original Deus Ex paled in comparison and Human Revolution was no where as awesome as the original, both very good (the original being much more ground-breaking obviously) but no where as awesome as the original Fallouts or Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment. The Black Isle writers were impeccable. It's sad that we do not have counter-cultural pop artists in the game industry making ground-breaking games anymore, and for Deus Ex games - we no longer have Looking Glass Studios type shit since they no longer exist and the company that took inspiration from them - the Marin Bioshock team decided to go a direction that was less "survival horror" with Bioshock: Infinite. But, that said, I will gladly play Fallout 4 and I will love every second of it regardless.

I remember playing Fallout 1/2 and being a "Savior of the Wasteland" and being a stealthy character robbing everyone blind. I'd pickpocket fancy armor off some shopkeeper and then promptly sell it back to him. I did however give most slavers the dynamite in the pants treatment on general principal.

I'm currently replaying Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Everybody likes me, I help everyone, I'm honest and sincere. And I kill all my enemies with headshots and/or criple them with complex bone fractures. I steal everything I deem valuable. I'm not even halfway through the game and I have killed over a hundred people.
Yep, I'm the good guy. Because the ends justify the means.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Trailer

MilkmanDan says...

You know, that trailer makes me think it would make for a better movie than game...

I liked the original Deus Ex a lot. Tried Human Revolution and just didn't really get into it -- maybe I should dust it off and try again. But in general I still think that trailer said "movie" to me more than it said "game"...

It's a close call between a few, but even with its warts, all and all Human Revolution might be my favorite mass market video game of the last ten years. More of the same would be fine by me.

Stunningly real graphics

@newtboy, this is actually running on a fairly low-spec pc (around the same as an xbone or ps4).

But yeah, this is similar to the deus ex video I posted a while back,

One small area with great attention paid to lighting and detail with no mechanics or animation.

@jmd, agreed the trees weren't great, but not all games are about open worlds and dynamic events. Look at COD. Very linear, incredibly scripted.

The fundamental problem with AAA games is the cost to create content. I think we're going to ultimately see some blend of procedural and hand created content as the way forward, where the designers build a layout for gameplay and a procedural engine fleshes out the visual details.

Hugh Herr: The new bionics that let us run, climb and dance

ChaosEngine says...

That is a valid concern, and it's very difficult to address.

Certainly, bionics for injury victims should be made available through your health system. I'd agree with the speaker here when he says that is a human right.

But voluntary augmentation is a much harder sell. On one hand, the situation you describe (where we have an augmented "caste" and a baseline caste) is certainly undesirable. But equally, it's not really practicable to fund everyone for every augmentation they want.

Tricky question.

Although as Yahtzee says "if there's a conflict between people who have ocean liner pistons for forearms and people who insist that everyone be as shit as they, I know which side I'm on!"

I'm not worried about a loss of humanity or w/e - Are amputees somehow less human because they use a prosthesis? I don't think so.

I'd be more worried about a divide forming between those that can afford to enhance themselves, be it through implants or some sort of genetic modification, and those can't. One would hope that this technology would improve the lives of all humanity and not create a society with a rigid hierarchy with almost no social mobility.
