The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim

Is the gamebryo engine still in the mix? That's the big question.

Yes. There were a few articles some weeks ago about how they were using the same engine as Oblivion/Fallout, but heavily modified. This is the first TES game they've done which isn't on a brand new engine.

It's suspect, but I trust that they can pull it off. It's just that a lot of the inadequaces of Oblivion and Fallout 3 were attributable to the engine.

disregard that, I suck clocks

Todd Howard had spoken about how Bethesda's next project would be using the same engine, but Todd Howard is a madman.

It's been rumored that Elder Scrolls 5 is using a new engine and it will be the first game released using that engine. However, I've also heard that the engine was mostly complete before the purchase of id, so it may be the only game to use the engine since going forward they would likely use the id Tech 5 as a base for future projects.>> ^shuac:

The myth of drinking eight glasses of water a day

This is pretty much as simply as I could put everything, it's a long relatively disorganized post so be prepared:

>> ^blutruth:

Also, I'm not a doctor, just some guy with access to a search engine, so don't take my word for it.

Thanks blutruth for looking into these kinds of claims instead of just watching videos as fact like most people do. I, on the other hand, AM in the medical field, and slightly disagree with this video.

>> ^cybrbeast:

Thanks for sources blutruth. But I have a problem with your simple in/out calcualtion. If you drink less there is also less to come out. I.e. if you drink a lot you will pee a lot and your pee will be colorless. If you drink less water you pee much less, but it will become ever more yellow/brown. The big question is at what color is your pee showing you, you drink too little.
There is a lot of range in the insensible water loss, which as stated in the clip means you don't have to drink much if you don't do much physical activity.

cybrbeast you are simplifying your argument too much. The simple in/out calculation is exactly that, simple. The information backing it has to do with body self-regulation with Urine/Plasma Osmolality tied to with Glomerular Filtration Rate, reabsorption of relevant electrolytes, and hormones controlling these functions. After studying the method of how a body detects it's own fluid level(effective circulating volume, also blood pressure), and working out how each system in it's own produces an effect on either water loss/retention, we worked out the approximate numbers of a person's water requirements. We even have a formula to check a person's current water deficit:

Water Deficit = 0.4 x Lean Body Weight x (plasma [Na]/140 -1)
(Renal Pathophysiology: The Essentials by Rennke/Denker pg. 90)(http://www.amazon.com/Renal-Pathophysiology-Essentials-Helmut-Rennke/dp/0781796261/)

The best way to answer your second question is about pee color, is to look at urine osmolalities. Urine osmolality can range from 50-100 mOsm/kg to 1000-1400 mOsm/kg(same renal book, page 206). The lower the osmolality, the more concentrated your urine is(and the more yellow it is) and the more water your body is retaining. There is no "perfect pee," from what I have learned, only a pretty relaxed range which anyone with access to fluids can maintain. If you want a specific color or osmolality you won't find one.

You are right when it comes to the large range of the insensible water loss, but you would be surprised what would make you lose that water and how much of it. Unfortunately I don't have time to look up the exact numbers of insensible water loss, but off the top of my head I can list physical activity (through sweating), breathing, environment with low humidity or high temperature. These little things can all add up to water loss.

Also stimulants like amphetamines, methamphetamines, caffeine, and depressants such as alcohol can lead to increased water loss.

What I'll also add to this is that it isn't only water that you lose throughout the day, but also electrolytes that need replacing through food and other sources. Drinking something such as distilled water will not do you any good, some of the best things to drink are isotonic solutions and juices that have many other nutrients and not just water that keep you going. Thanks for your time.

Why bother posting vids to the video sift (Wtf Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It's a big question you ask. It certainly isn't specific to VideoSift. Why do people post anywhere? For something like Twitter you could make the case that they're communicating with a particular audience, a group of friends or a "following". Likewise a site like Delicious has utility in organizing the links you might want to go back to.

But social sharing sites like the Sift and countless others are different beasts. From my experience I would say it's about touching other peoples' lives. If you post something that you think is great- and you get 10,000 other people to watch it too, it feels like a big deal. Like most things good on the Internet- it's the human interaction aspects that we like and are attracted to. (Chat Roulette)

You mention money- and I'm not saying that people wouldn't like it if we started giving out hundred dollar bills for reaching the top 15- but in general I think people aren't looking for this. The social sites that pay for achievements always seem cheap and nasty to me - and appealing to a very low denominator.

I would rather that a community like ours, that is built on altruism and meritocratic behavior, had a non-profit co-op kind of model wherein members could invest themselves into the ownership of the Sift. I've looked into it - but I don't have the financial chops - or even the money - to make this happen, but it's a solid idea.

Brazillian Transvestite Communication FAIL!

brain says...

Ok, here's my best guess. This is what bablefish says:

"Adicione a comunidade da muda no orkut a bixa muda de Juazeiro-ce"
means:
"It adds the community of dumb in orkut bixa dumb of Juazeiro-ce"

I believe that muda means "dumb" as in "mute". People who cannot speak.

I've also found a article about the incidence. When translated, it mentions someone regretting the interview and something about people with hearing impairment.
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&tl=en&u=http://gentedemidia.blogspot.com/2008/10/leitor-traduz-linguagem-da-muda-de.html

So my best guess is that they were interviewing her for starting an Orkut community for mute people in Juazeiro, Brazil. So maybe the interviewer knew what to expect and that's why she wasn't reacting. Then the big question is, who's idea was it to do an interview?!

If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Penn Says: Agnostic vs. Atheist

MaxWilder says...

1) Here's one of the big distinctions between science and religion. The start of the big bang is still a big question mark. Physics as we understand it breaks down the closer we get to defining the first microseconds of the universe. We just don't know how it worked. Yet. And that's ok! There are people working their asses off trying to define how the big bang happened, and people on your side of the argument seem to want them to drop their pencils and give up! Just because we don't have it figured out yet doesn't mean it's supernatural! It used to be common knowledge that the movements of the sun, moon, and stars were all caused by gods as they went about their daily business, but we know better now. We've figured out why all that stuff happens. It didn't need gods with golden sky chariots, it needed Newton's discoveries so that we could understand. The same thing applies to the beginning of our universe. You keep insisting that since we can't define how the big bang happened that it must be supernatural, and your brand of supernatural as well. Your belief that your god fills the blank is completely unjustified. Why is it so hard for you to just accept that it is currently unknown?

2) It is patently absurd to suspect a conspiracy to wipe out all information about Jesus to be suppressed during his lifetime. Anyone who believed he was the fulfillment of Jewish prophecies would have become a follower, and anyone who didn't believe would have noticed him as an effective rabble-rouser. Jesus supposedly had thousands of people going to listen to him when he spoke, and greeted him at the gates of the city with palm fronds. He was a superstar of his time! And you have no problem thinking contemporary historians just overlooked him? Or worse, recognized him as the Christ, the son of the one true God, and instead of following him treated him like a threat to what they now know is their own false religion?

3) That was simply one glaring example of how translations differ and the effect that can have on interpretation.

4) I can't refute a nonsensical argument. Just because 12 people were stupid enough (supposedly, since we only have the bible as evidence) to believe strongly enough to die for something, doesn't make it true. Just look at the Heaven's Gate cult. 39 people dead for their crazy beliefs, that doesn't make it true.

5) It's very simple why people like me keep pushing our arguments. Theists keep trying to push theirs on us. The big one is Creationism in public schools. Others, like the anti-abortionists, contribute to the poisoning and dumbing-down of what was once a fairly honorable political party. But the worst part is the precedent that religion sets. It provides a warm blanket of lies, where all you have to do is believe what you are told, and you don't have to do any thinking for yourself. After all, there's not much difference between believing what your preacher tells you about the afterlife and what he tells you to believe about politics. Or about history. Or about foreigners. Their ignorance has an impact on my life, and it sickens me. Yes, I'm intolerant. Of ignorance. Specifically stubborn ignorance, like the kind that says it's ok to accept something without evidence as true, and to base your life on it. The kind that says it's ok to turn away from facts that disagree with what you already believe. The kind that says it's ok to waste this life in service to a lie, because the next life will be your reward. That shit is not ok, and I don't want to live in a world where people think it is. That's why I keep speaking up.

I don't quite eat up what these people are theorizing. The big bang is just a theory, they can't prove it.

In science, a theory isn't merely a guess, or a hunch. It's much, much more than that.

>> Humans are simply not intelligent to comprehend the big question. You can know what is 1 plus 1. Its within human comprehension. Try to think what was there before and how everything started out of nothing, or what caused the spark. You can't. We do not posses this intelligence.

You do not, cannot know that.
