Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

Strawman? Do you even know what strawman is? why don't you look up the definition of strawman. Oliver's whole argument is 'strawman'. Show me some proof.

This is just another progressive ploy to make people think there is some war against women and the gov't needs to do more to make sure it doesn't happen.

Pathetic, truly pathetic.

Also, here's an anecdote for ya...STFU.

Whats a Country to do when it is out of money? Cut services and keep law an order.
This is what is happening. Lots of pissed off , unemployed people receiving less government benefits, along with higher prices for goods and services due to the government deflating the currency to ease the country's debt.

In America many states and local government are on the edge of bankruptcy. These states and cities will have to do the same as Spain and Greece. Much bloodshed is yet to come.
The Federal government is printing money and borrowing like there is no tomorrow. Tomorrow will surly come and the pied piper will be paid, but only after we collapse.
With little moral fiber left in our leadership, it is easier to spend our self into a depression then face the awful truth and sell the hard sell to the people.

Or it could become a democracy and actually take the peoples votes into account rather than doing whatever it pleases and being ruled by the rich. America is not a poor country it's outstandingly rich, yet the public doesn't get that money...it's not ours but it's our rulers. Our Education and Healthcare could be free, but that doesn't help the rich, so it's not.

why Occupy Wall Street?

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Well - the video gets one thing right. Repealing Glass-Steagall was a horrible mistake. Where they get it wrong is that it was not 'banks' or 'Wall Street' that was pushing for it.

Glass Stegall's repeal is a long story that begins with Jimmy Carter and ended with Bill Clinton. They leaned hard on banks because they wanted more poor folks owning houses. But the dang awful truth was that the poor folks just couldn't actually AFFORD to pay for those homes, and banks weren't in the business of giving them houses for nothing.

So Congress (with both the GOP and Democrats) began pushing for a change. It is very true that there were companies (notably AIG) who also pushed for this because they saw a way they could profit from it. But "banks" did not want this at all. They were forced into it. Once the housing bubble started they had to start in with the sub-primes just to compete but a lot of them knew it was very risky. But for a while it seemed to be working and everyone was making money hand over fist. And it has to be said also that CONSUMERS weren't exactly ethical either. Many people bought homes they knew they couldn't pay for just to make a quick buck.

That's the history and fact. Glass Steagall didn't go away because of evil banks. It went away because of governmetn social engineering. So bring it back already! Oh - yeah - that would interfere with Obama's CURRENT PRACTICE of forcing banks to give away more loans in minority communities...

http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article/577794/201107081851/DOJ-Begins-Bank-Witch-Hunt.aspx

The real problem is government. Get the government OUT of the market. Establish a simple set of basic, fair guidelines and then tell government to get out of everyone's way. Glass Steagall would have never been repealed without a corrupt government pushing for it.

Snuff versus non-snuff (Philosophy Talk Post)

bareboards2 says...

I applaud your desire to present the awful truth of the danger that our police officers face every time they go out on patrol. I get upset about the beatdown that cops generally get on this site, too.

I said this on the video itself -- post a news report on the event to get the conversation going. We don't need the sound track to a man's death (I haven't watched it yet, the description of that vid make me cry, I don't need to hear to know that it is horrifying.)

We need this side of the story. I think cops can slide into brutality so easily because every day, they are faced with an armed public and they have a target on their back. Yes, some abusive assholes are drawn to the profession because they like guns and waving them around. But as professional standards rise, these guys won't get jobs or keep them if they manage to slip through.

I often say -- imagine it is your brother or your father who is going out on domestic violence calls or making traffic stops late at night. Imagine you are waiting at home for your police officer spouse to come home.

Michael Moore Helps the NYPD Distinguish Wallets from Guns

Michael Moore is such a simpleton. He exemplifies everything I hate about television and mass media and socio-political discussions. And no, I'm not a conservative, I used to like Michael Moore. I bought his "The Awful Truth" series on VHS when it came out. But I now see his movies as cheap, manipulative, over-edited 4-panel comic strips, just like so much of modern mass media.
It was a tragic mistake when the police shot and killed Amadou Diallo. From what I understand his English wasn't all that great and was probably confused with what the cops were telling him to do. He pulls out his wallet and the cop nearest to him starts back-pedaling in panic, as he doesn't know what it is. And the cop trips as he is retreating and falls down violently. The next cop reacts instinctively, thinking the retreating cop sees a gun and is in danger. And he starts firing at Amadou. The other cops respond in kind, thinking that "these guys know something I don't, that this guy is a threat" and they start firing too. It all happened very quickly. Then when they find out it's a wallet and they misread the whole thing they are traumatized and shaken. Quite a different picture than that which I've heard described, which is a comic book image of grinning, evil, trigger-happy racist cops, standing over Amadou in a semi-circle, gleefully pumping bullets into his body and reloading and firing more and giving high-fives and smoking cigars and saying to each other "he got what he deserved for not obeying our orders".
But all these details I've just included wouldn't easily fit on a picket sign or be boiled down to a simple-minded protest chant.

Talk about anti-michael moore propogandistic reaction..

You claim to be an ex-fan of moore. I suggest that if anyone else had made this, you'd be laughing. It's not in the same vein as the stuff you claim to dislike about him, it's just good old fashioned humour.

I watched without bias, and i thought it was very funny. You're definitely anti-michael moore whether you admit it or not.

They fired 41 one rounds at him. That's an average to 10.25 rounds per officer. Obviously you can't fire 1/4 of a bullet, but still, that mean each officer had to almost empty his firearm while firing at one suspect. Now we all know he wasn't hit 41 times, and I understand the need to fire until the target has "gone down" but 41 shots is super excessive. Either these cops were trigger happy, or horrible, horrible shots and shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms because they are far more likely to hit an innocent bystander than anything they are aiming at.

NOFX - Franco Un-American

eric3579 says...

I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small
Never thought about the problems of this planet at all
Global warming, radio-active sites
Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! no!

Why think of all the bad things when life is so good?
Why help with an am when theres always a could?
Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea
Outside of California, its foreign policy

I dont want changes, I have no reactions
Your dilemmas are my distractions

Thats no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco, franco un-american

I never looked around, never second-guessed
Then I read some howard zinn now Im always depressed
And now I cant sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little noam chomsky

Im eating vegetation, cause of fast food nation
Im wearing a couple of shoes cause of globalization
Im watching michael moore expose the awful truth
Im listening to public enemy and reagan youth

I see no world peace cause of zealous armed forces
I eat no breath-mints cause their from de-hoofed horses
Now I cant believe; what an absolute failure
The presidents laughing cause we voted for nader

Thats no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
Where can we go, franco un-american

I want to move north and be a canadian
Or hang down low with the nice australians
I dont want to be another i-dont-care-ican
What are we gonna do franco, franco un-american

Antonin Scalia: Torture Is Not "Cruel and Unusual Punishment

rickegee says...

If she started smashing fat fingers(which would be much better TV incidentally than the interview that her producers cut), then Scalia might start crying about the 4th and 5th amendments if he were really delirious. But 60 Minutes is not a state actor or the government so he wouldn't get too far there.

To address rottenseed's timing question, it should be made absolutely clear that torture inflicted upon American citizens is not legal whether they are incarcerated or detained before trial or seized from their homes by the popo. If you read the 8th as part of a legal procedural continuum (arrest, detention, conviction)along with the 4th and 5th, it makes sense for something crafted in legalese.

If you are unlucky enough to be tagged an "unlawful enemy combatant," however, it is now completely unclear (thanks to the purely Dick Cheney and his legal enablers) what law or procedures protects that person from torture of any kind. That is the awful truth that Scalia dances around in this clip.

To parse the word punishment or torture or even the history of 8th amd jurisprudence misses the point about what is truly outrageous about Scalia's position.
