Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 2012 Flea Acceptance Speech RHCP

chingalera says...

my fav Flea moment was seeing him in the film, "Let's Get Lost" hanging out with Chet Baker whom they tracked-down resurrected for a recording session for the film months before he was gone.
Flea has always been about the music-Funny though, never really dug on the Chilli Peppers heavily, ignored most popular music from the nineties altogether-Ex saw them in PDX back in the late 90's on a bill with the Beastie Boys, said it was the best show she'd ever almost been trampled at!

It's so hard to not just want dickheads like this just removed from society, just taken out of altogether because they just have no right to live around other people. I've seen a share of fucktards like this on trains/at stations, and I just wish they were fenced off from the rest of the country and allowed to die off.
But that's not really the solution is it? The reason these fuckwits exist is fear and lack of education. This absolutely horrible, abhorrent mindset is born out of living a life that is insular and not exposed to people of other cultures and backgrounds and discovering that really it's ok that people exist that are 'different' to you, and the vast majority of people from any culture are really nice and just want a happy life. And the fear comes from thinking that these 'other' people are going to make you the minority instead of them, and thinking that you're losing your 'power'.
Urgh.

promote this horrible reality of some people in Australia. I'd love to believe that all of us here were as accepting as the majority of us are, but the fact is there's this entire set of horrible, racist shitheads, and there's an entire other set of people who aren't 'bad' people but have this racist undercurrent to them that comes up every now and again, and you are taken aback and go 'Fuck me, I'd never have guessed that you could feel that way about a whole race of people'
It just fucking saddens me. Any time I see something in the media about people being racist here I so want it not to be true.

Don't feel too bad, that exists in every country. It's not a racist thing, it's a human thing =(

Romney Campaign Ad - Lies About Jeep Moving to China

Sagemind says...

OK, Chrysler went bankrupt and had to be bought out to survive - I may be corrected (and that's fine) but my point has still been made. Obama didn't make them go bankrupt (he kept people employed) - Obama did what he could to stop them from dissolving altogether. He could have done nothing and watched every Chrysler employee loose their jobs, from the factories, to the mechanics to the sales teams, to all the little companies that manufacture parts.

A few years back, we had a factory in my town as well. White Western Star. They manufactured diesel trucks and they were the largest employer in town.

They were bought out by Freightliner (a US company - a foreign company) a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks, (A German company - also a foreign company).

The factory was shut down when Freightliner acquired them. Putting half the town out of business that catered parts and services to the factory. Times were tough and we are still recovering.

My point is, I know how it could have gone in the US and on a much larger scale. Obama didn't let this happen. But Romney is making it look like Obama was the one at fault here - which is pure lies.
>> ^deedub81:

Chrysler DID go through Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. A foreign auto manufacturer bought the majority of the shares from the U.S. (Fiat) and the new chairman of the newly formed Chrysler Group, LLC has said that they will be moving "Jeep output" to China as demand rises. >> ^Sagemind:
"Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy" WTF - Obama bailed them out so they wouldn't go bankrupt.
Most people were against it but he helped them out anyway to keep them afloat and their workers employed. So how does this attack make any sense?

20 Year Cartoon Network Tribute With 100 Cartoon Characters

sixshot says...

Interesting tribute... but sadly, I can't stand CN these days. It's drowning in shows with uninteresting art styles and nonsensical story, if any. I used to tune in to CN so I can watch things like The Boondocks and Teen Titans... but now... well... with their constant shuffling of airtimes and introductions of boring shows, I just basically stopped tuning in altogether. I'm sure many can easily testify that everything was fine and dandy back in the 1990s and 2000s.

Reel Islam: A Response to "Innocence of Muslims" Film

Sagemind says...

The issues here are all wrong.

He's right about "Innocence of Muslims" looking like it was made by "Rank amateurs in a basement studio, no doubt it was. It's so bad that no one would ever have seen or heard of it, if it wasn't for the hoopla it caused. I never would have. Once I did, I sought it out and watched it. Well sort of.

First of all, the quality is garbage, something less than what we would expect from a YouTube video. Past that, The editing, the writing and the acting is terrible. It's confusing and hard to follow. In all honestly, I ended up skimming large parts of it because I didn't get the point. It's that bad.

What I don't understand is why the Muslim community felt this piece of crap video was worth killing people over? What they did was promote the film, and in doing so, brought fame to it. They are just as much to blame in the distribution of said offensive material.

So, some no name, never heard of before Egyptian born person (Nakoula Basseley Nakoula) creates a 14 minute anti-muslim video. Naakoula is a graduate of the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University. Born and educated over seas, he comes to the US and creates a video called "Innocence of Bin Laden" After the film is finished, in post production, he over-dubs all the audio and changes the title to Innocence of Muslims and changes the meaning of the film altogether.

Nakoula has been arrested for the "intent to manufacture methamphetamine" for which he did prison time. Then he pleaded no contest to federal charges of bank fraud as he opened fake bank accounts in order to defraud the banks out of as much as $800,000. He was a criminal with no scruples or morals.

He went out of his way to create this movie just to piss people off. He even claimed it was funded by $5 million collected from 100 Jewish donors, and that he was an Israeli-Jew.

So, what is my point? This piece of scum set out to create an incident and he succeeded.
The Muslim world over reacted and went "Bat-shit insane" (my words). In a fit of rage, they misplaced the blame on everyone associated with the West. They held protests in almost every major country in the world. They killed people and turned this into an international state of panic. "Oh poor us, don't criticize our Mohammad." (insert screams of "oh how could you" here) and ("The western world hates us - kill them now")

Now as a result, we, the people that didn't do anything, are being told we need to be more tolerant of the bat-shit crazy people and start educating ourselves more on their religion and watch more of their movies.

Now I have no issue educating myself on other cultures, in fact I find it interesting. But what I don't like being told is that us Westerners are part of the problem and that if we'd only have educated ourselves, this insensitivity wouldn't have happened. This is so absolutely false and absurd.

I know not all Muslims are "bat-shit crazy," but I didn't see any of them standing up and pointing their finger in the right direction (at some scumbag from Egypt).

As far as I am concerned this is what I see:
1). A scumbag needs to be deported for succeeding in inciting riots causing death.
2). People should be able to have their own opinions and be able to speak them in all areas concerning religion or their lack of faith in them.
3). the Muslim people who took part in the riots and killings should all be punished to the full extent of the law and be shamed by the rest of the people.
4). Muslim people need to get over themselves, learn to accept that their way isn't the only way and learn to "turn the other cheek". (And I use the term "their way" loosely because I don't think even they can even decide and agree on what the rules of their religion are.)

Rare Spider Shuts Down Huge Construction Project

Braken Bat Cave Meshweaver (Cicurina venii)
http://ecos.fws.gov/speciesProfile/profile/speciesProfile.action?spcode=J01D

To find a Braken Bat Cave meshweaver was a discovery of another kind altogether, akin to “stumbling on a new Galapagos Island in terms of the biological significance of the region,” said biologist Jean Krejca, Zara's president.

After the spider was collected in a bottle, it was dissected for it to be identified, Krejca said. Collecting and killing an endangered species is allowed for that purpose if done by someone with a federal permit. No other spiders have been spotted in the hole where the one was found.

Channel creation (User Poll by BoneRemake)

>> ^ReverendTed:

I'm not sure I see what all the fuss is about, though that may be because I don't really "use" the channels at all aside from ticking some boxes when I post a new Sift.

You should try it and you'll quickly see why it's a problem. Browse to a channel that sounds like it might be interesting and see how many videos would actually scratch that itch. Results will vary wildly depending on what you choose.

If drugs are your topic of choice, you may find yourself watching teletubbies today.

If human sexuality intrigues you, prepare to watch 2 cats have sex while a third dry humps them.

Does the far east fascinate you? You'll be sorting through every video that contains an Asian person. It could be a video of some guy who's lived in San Diego his entire life watching an NFL game, drinking a Budweiser, and eating a hot dog but if he's got an epicanthus, he's going in #asia.

Lots of people (most, if I had to guess) just don't care. But then why are we spending all this time cataloging videos if nobody gives a shit?

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. Let's either make a good effort to make channels valuable, or get rid of them altogether and just do this because it will be way less work.

What is the point of the down vote system? (Blog Entry by ZappaDanMan)

oritteropo says...

At present a downvote is a strong vote of disapproval, or casting a this vid does not belong on VideoSift vote. It makes sense to me that you would want people to at least have some idea of what is what before being able to make that call.

That said though, I don't particularly think that Bronze star is an appropriate bar... some people have been members since almost the start and have yet to achieve that (or have only recently got Bronze). I would say that those people should be able to downvote, even if they don't want to post lots of vids.

If you can vote up you should be able to vote down.

Any form of voting can be abused, but that doesn't mean you get rid of the option to do so altogether.

@ReverendTed
Many issues to address here, but first, some clarifications. My analogies (wonky as they are) were to point out the immorality of the “you’ve got to live with the consequences” stance, they were not about who’s harmed. But speaking of harm, it would be more ethical to let the two analogical characters “suck it up” than to demand of a woman she bring an unwanted pregnancy to term. In the first cases, there is only one victim, but in the latter there are two. When I say abortion is “punishment enough”, what I mean is that it is already a disagreeable outcome of mistake-making/poor-choice-making, while obliging a woman to give birth to (and raise) an unwanted child not only negatively affects the mother’s life, but that of the child as well; it is a disproportionate price to pay for the former and completely unfair for the latter. Hence, imo, abortion is by far the lesser of two “evils”.

Adoption instead of abortion is “a non-solution and worse” for several reasons. First, there are already more than enough children already alive who need parents, and you know very well that most people prefer making their own than adopting, so many of these will never have a family (not to mention the often inferior care-giving in foster homes and social centres). Now imagine that every abortion is replaced with a child given up for adoption; can you not see the horror? It’s that many more neglected lives, not to mention the overall problem of overpopulation.

I’m going to go on a slight tangent, but a relevant one. I have a certain amount of experience with humanitarian aid in Africa, and one thing that causes me no end of despair is the idiotic, selfish way much of it is performed. Leaving aside corruption, proselytization, etc., the “West” pours food and medicine into Africa with that whole “life is sacred” “feed the poor” mentality – good intentions of course – but with disastrous results because education and contraception (not to mention abortion) are almost always left out, even discouraged, with the support of the usual religious suspects (remember the pope on condoms causing aids?). The result is simple, and simply appalling: despite aid and funds increasing globally every year, starvation and child mortality continue to rise. Why? Because the people being barely maintained keep making kids who grow up to starve and die in turn, instead of focusing on the education of one or two children to get them out of the vicious cycle (there is another argument to be made about the education of women, but I’m ranting enough as is).

The point of this digression is to show that the non-pragmatic “all life is sacred” stance is terribly counter-productive, and the same holds for abortion (viz: on adoption above). As for lack of pragmatism, the same goes for your comment on abstinence:
I appreciate that "don't have sex if you can't accept being pregnant" is not a magical incantation that makes people not have sex, but it has to be a part of it, because no method of contraception is 100% effective, even if used correctly.
What you’re saying basically is “people shouldn’t have sex unless they’re ready for childbearing/-raising”, which is absurd when one considers human nature and human relations.

All of the above arguments weigh into the question of the “ball of cells” vs “human being/identity”. The “sacred life” stance is one of quantity over quality, and in the long run devalues human life altogether. To quote Isaac Asimov on overpopulation: “The more people there are the less one individual matters”. In the abortion debate, what we have is one side so intent on protecting the abstract “life” that they disregard the lives of the two individuals in question, namely the “individual who is” (the mother) and the “individual who might be” (the child). The former is already a human individual, with memories, relationships, a personality, etc. The latter is not. The abortion question takes into account the future quality of life not only of the mother but of the would-be child as well, something the anti-abortion stance does not. Abortion doesn’t end an individual’s life, it prevents a ball of cells from becoming one. Here is where the religious aspect is crucial, because while embryologists see a complex mass of cells with no capacity for cognition/sensation, superstitious people assign an individual “consciousness” or “soul” to it, thus making abortion feel like murder instead of like the removal of a tumour. The question of potential is an emotionally manipulative one that does not hold up to criticism, because as @packo sarcastically (and the Monty Python brilliantly ) point out, you can go a long ways up the stream of potential.

I like the first half of @gorillaman’s tomato analogy for that reason (the second half is hyperbolic absurdity), that it underlines what is important in the debate: the living “thing”’s capacity for sensation/cognition/interaction. If you grew up with a tumour on your body which giggled when you tickled it and cried when you hit it, you would probably think twice before getting rid of it. That does not mean I’m categorically against late-term abortions, but for me the scale seriously tips between the 20-25th weeks when the nervous system of the foetus centralises. Of course, it is preferable that should an abortion take place it would be before the foetal stage, for the sake of medical and psychological comfort, but unfortunately one cannot always know so soon that one is pregnant.

Are you, or will you be, a parent? (User Poll by xxovercastxx)

hpqp says...

Congrats @ReverendTed!

I do not want to have children, not only for personal reasons but also because the world is overpopulated enough as is, and frankly, if I ever change my mind about having noisy shit-factories and nerve-wrackers I cannot be rid off (can you tell I grew up in a large family?), there are plenty of deserving children who did not choose to be born to irresponsible or now-dead parents and would need new ones. So yeah, if I change my mind, I'd adopt, but I do not in any way look down on people who responsibly choose to have children of their own, nor do I on those who decide to abort.

(edit: wanting to experience pregnancy is a very different, very selfish desire altogether)
