Dubai Creek Tower: Building the World's Tallest Structure

TheFreak says...

The worlds tallest building is a $1-Billion USD project.

Meanwhile, Herr Orange Führer would like $30-Billion USD to finance his ego-driven boondoggle.

Comedian Attacked By Woman

kceaton1 jokingly says...

It was the dick joke for sure, it hit WAY TOO CLOSE to home. Doesn't everyone agree? Why did I hit the sarcasm button again!?

--------
Now for those that wish to know a bit about that little monument...

I'll assume since he's a comedian he does actually know a bit about the Washington Monument (that is "typically" true for many comedians, they may make fun of something, but they tend to have a fairly in-depth knowledge of just what they ARE making fun of; though not always).

It is, of course, an obelisk. An obelisk was chosen for Washington (probably due to some of his Freemason views, who knows; they may have played a part--a decently big one in my eyes--lots of Washington D.C. is like that) as obelisks are some of the oldest structures in Egyptian culture--for George it was to mean this: "...to evoke the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father..."!

It was fairly hard in "its day" to make and complete; its original design was a HUGE undertaking but was scaled down along the way as resources and support dwindled. It took a very long time to finish and holds a great many distinctions, and most certainly isn't a, "...cement structure." (if you took that literally). It's marble and put together like a puzzle (kind of like brick and mortar, all the way up; a lot of it is marble--two different kinds, Pre-Civil-War, Post-Civil-War). For the time this was an actual engineering feat, from a degree due its height and size (when completed, it was the tallest BUILDING in the entire world--again explaining why it wasn't an "easy" build at all) and from there many of the "goodies" that were included within the project. BUT, the original design that would have made that monument quite different (not so "clean" or "empty") was changed by the final person with the say so, changing MANY details about the whole Monument from its original framework.

Look that up yourself, but one part is the fact that both the ground around it would be FAR different AND the Obelisk would look FAR different as it would be decorated with all the ornamentation, wording, symbolism, etc... From 1848 to 1884; from one idea to a fairly different one; one that was more attention getting and true to the Egyptian building, and their new ideas; to something different; a blank, clean look as it is now.

Maintenance workers on top of the worlds tallest building

World's tallest building opening ceremony - The Burj Khalifa

poppajay says...

An amazing piece of architectural engineering, of course they're going to publicise the fact they've just built the tallest building in the world. Who wouldn't?

Obviously Smugg, you know nothing of the Palestinian problem to be making such an inane comment and so far as the Muslim responsibility for helping poorer Muslim nations...it made me think about all those lucky lucky Christian kids living in abject poverty in Mexican slums thinking about how lucky they are to be bordered by the great and benevolent Christian USA. (along with all the people living in American slums??) Stones and glass houses I think.

I don't personally agree with nor like the ostentatiousness of Dubai, in the same way I don't agree/like that of Vegas and Disneyworld. I also do not like self righteous American hypocrisy.

So the workers only got $6 p/day?? Who, the designers? the structural engineers? maybe the architects? I'm sure some of the workers were low paid but not all. I mean, it's not like the USA has ever made use of cheap immigrant labour is it. (and let's not talk about the use of SLAVE labour, it only lasted three hundred years after all.)

A New Standard for Deception by NIST

jimnms says...

From your own link:

FACT: Jet fuel burns at 800° to 1500°F, not hot enough to melt steel (2750°F). However, experts agree that for the towers to collapse, their steel frames didn't need to melt, they just had to lose some of their structural strength — and that required exposure to much less heat. "I have never seen melted steel in a building fire," says retired New York deputy fire chief Vincent Dunn, author of The Collapse Of Burning Buildings: A Guide To Fireground Safety. "But I've seen a lot of twisted, warped, bent and sagging steel. What happens is that the steel tries to expand at both ends, but when it can no longer expand, it sags and the surrounding concrete cracks."

"Steel loses about 50 percent of its strength at 1100°F," notes senior engineer Farid Alfawak-hiri of the American Institute of Steel Construction. "And at 1800° it is probably at less than 10 percent." NIST also believes that a great deal of the spray-on fireproofing insulation was likely knocked off the steel beams that were in the path of the crashing jets, leaving the metal more vulnerable to the heat.

The Madrid fire burned for 24 hours at temperatures up to 800°C (1500°F) and did not collapse. In 2004, Venezuela's tallest building burned uncontrolled for 17 hours and did not collapse. WTC7 had two small fires which burned for 6 hours and it collapsed in what looks like a controlled demolition.

When the tapes from 9/11 firefighters in were released, there was no mention of communication problems as we were told, and firefighters only reported small pockets of fire, not a huge inferno that can melt steel.

Two hose lines are needed, Chief Orio Palmer says from an upper floor of the badly damaged south tower at the World Trade Center. Just two hose lines to attack two isolated pockets of fire. ''We should be able to knock it down with two lines,'' he tells the firefighters of Ladder Company 15 who were following him up the stairs of the doomed tower.

Lt. Joseph G. Leavey is heard responding: ''Orio, we're on 78, but we're in the B stairway. Trapped in here. We got to put some fire out to get to you.''

Ladder 15 had finally found the fire after an arduous climb to the 78th floor, according to the tape. They were in the B stairwell. On the other side of the fire were hundreds of people, blocked from fleeing by smoke and flame on the stairs. Chief Palmer was facing similar fires in the A stairwell, across the floor.

''We're gonna knock down some fire here in the B Stair,'' Lieutenant Leavey is heard telling one of his firefighters. ''We'll meet up with you. You get over to the A Stair and help out Chief Palmer.''

If those fires were burning at 1500-1800°F, the people on that floor would have been dead.

I'm no conspiracy theory nutcase, but I'm also not stupid, the "official" explanations of collapse just don't match reality.

New Testimony: WTC7 Survivor Barry Jennings Account

dbalsdon says...

So, please enlighten us, oh great and knowledgeable one: When was the last time two 747s, flying at speed, still loaded with fuel, crashed into two of the tallest buildings in the world? Also, when was the last time a 100+ storie building collapsed, with a large portion of it falling on to another building??

First time you say? OK.

Japanese video shows giant meteor hitting earth

EMPIRE says...

If something like this ever happened for real (it didn't even have to be a meteor that big) I swear that if I did't get killed in the initial blast, and knew I coulnd't do anything to save myself, I would definitely go to the highest point around, maybe the tallest building in the city or so, go to the rooftop, and just enjoy a great view of the end of the world.

You make my point for me -- human beings are fragile things, their memories are unreliable, and their brains often work in mysterious ways to make the intolerable tolerable.

I was horrified watching it, myself - and I was in a high rise 23 stories up in the tallest building in town. People were leaving the building in the actual fear that it was happening everywhere. I'm not pretending my experience was worse than yours - but I certainly would never use emotional distress as an argument for an absurd thesis.

See, this is what I'm talking about when I referred to y'all being amateur scientists - it isn't necessary for the beams to melt, only weaken enough to no longer support the weight of one of the tallest buildings in the world. I'm absolutely certain your pancake theories don't hold up when referring to a building of that height and weight. Of course things are going to pulverize when dropped from that height with that much pressure.

The cores of the buildings are what were on fire, due to fucking jetliners full of fuel going through them at hundreds of miles an hour. I don't think your other examples of building fires quite set the same precedent. Not even close.

Multiple floors collapsing is going to sound like multiple explosions - duh. And buildings aren't allowed to exist, especially ones as big as the Towers, without being insured.

I didn't copy and paste any of the above from another site - because it's common fucking sense if you have half a brain.

See, this is why I hate debating this stuff at all - because I'm forced to deal with paranoid kooks who will believe anything an amateur will tell them and don't know the first thing about rational thought. Fuck!

Do me a favor - play devil's advocate, and try Google-searching what else "pull it" could possibly mean in that circumstance.

Yeah, ren - that's because the experts themselves are having a hard time agreeing on how WTC7 went down - but I'm thinking being right next to two of the tallest buildings in the world as they came down in a pile of rubble might have something to do with it. See, that's how science really works - attempting to theorize what happened using the available facts, as opposed to christening yourself an expert on everything from construction to physics after watching a couple of Flash movies on the internets.

I'll take theories based on real knowledge of those subjects instead of baseless accusations out of a bad literary thriller. The towers were constructed with explosives in them? The fire was minor? Demonstrably false, and I don't know what about the last 7 years makes you think the Bush administration is competent enough to tie its own shoes, much less pull off the greatest conspiracy to ever happen, ever, ever.

Again, I can argue this from now until the end of time, but you and your brethren have the certainty of religious fervor, and there's nothing obvious or factual I can say that could shake your faith.
