The Best Bouncer Fight Ever

I got lazy on the title, that is the video one. The best bar fight I ever saw was outside of a Korean bar in Harker Heights, Texas back in the 90's. I had exited the bar next to it with some friends when we saw the bouncers toss out two elderly Korean gentlemen in full suits. I would guess they were at least 50 or so.

Anyway, once they were outside, the bouncers left and these two guys proceeded to get into a full fledged Tae Kwon Do (or maybe Hap Ki Do, I don't think it was that though because it had a lot of power kicks) fight. I mean they were going at it, and I mean HARD. Much more contact than in any of the TKD matches I had been in at tournaments. After about a minute of not landing a solid hit, they stopped and mutually allowed one another to remove their suit jackets. Then back to the fray. They did get a few kicks in and got a bit bloody, but that is when the bouncers returned, apparently with their WIVES.

Hilarity ensued, because both wives basically glanced at one another and then waded into the fracas. They each started slapping and kicking on their husband, screaming at them. I don't speak Korean, but you could tell by the tone they were dressing them down hardcore. The fight stopped and two bloody, formerly distinguished looking guys looked like a couple of kids who had really torqued off their mom. I was dying off to the side from laughter. I swear if camera phones had existed back then it would have been an instance classic.

You have a low bar for what you consider bar fights. Around here, this is what happens every 10 minutes after 9pm until closing.

It happened before video phones became a thing, but the "Best bouncer fight" I ever watched was between two bouncers from competing clubs hanging out at a third club. Both were over 6'6", both had years of experience in their chosen martial arts, and each was built like a brick shithouse. Epic. Purely Epic.

That's utter bullshit.

Every martial art I ever studied as a kid (aikido, tae kwon do, karate) taught us from Day 1 that you only use it in self-defense--specifically once someone else throws a punch or kick at you. It was drilled into us that we could seriously hurt someone and that fighting was a last resort when we couldn't get away. My nephews are doing karate now and their instruction is exactly the same.

I was in several fights before I started taking martial arts and never got into one again afterwards--never felt the need to. I didn't have to prove myself to anyone because my hard training in the martial arts gave me a sense of self-worth that didn't depend on others' opinions of me. Honestly, all kids should have proper (fuck McDojos) martial arts training . It teaches them discipline, respect, and perseverance.

Great. I tried Crossfit and I thought it was actually quite cool for a bit. However I had specific goals and Crossfits main problem is its unwillingness to adapt.

Here's the idea, you go in and you're given a notebook to track your progress (at the place I went to at least). You tell them your goals and write them down, then you record the workouts you do and the time you do them in ect.

Time: They time how fast you can go through various workouts which seems fine. Until you are doing things badly because you are trying to speed through them, and there's not a lot of reason to try and be FASTER every time. It makes sense to me to limit a workout to say 20 mins, it does not to try and beat your time of doing the same workout by 30 seconds or so. It just leads to sloppy reps and injuries.

Goals: Your goals btw don't matter. It's just a bunch of "I wanna be fitter" usually. My goals were very specific though because they had to do with my chosen profession (soccer referee) and the fact that I really don't care how much I can lift or what I look like.

Looks: They try to make this about fitness, it's all about being able to do MORE WORK. Being fit is it's own reward and being an athlete throughout life is what's cool. On this idea they refuse to have mirrors. I remember having mirrors growing up having Tae Kwon Do classes. Why were their mirrors? So you can look at what you are doing and adjust your form accordingly, they're a great took. The same goes for high school in weightlifting. You can look at yourself lift in the mirror and adjust how you are doing it. Instead they have people there correcting your form, often I found doing a bad job of it and in my case even debating with each other how I ,with heavy weights on my shoulders, should be lifting things. Yeah they don't want you admiring your body or something, the principle is stupid because SOME PEOPLE are there just for vanity and they have mirrors at home. I am there so I can do these things right like I know how, a mirror helps me with that.

Crossfit is a good idea, but I would like it to be less like the rigid religion I found and more flexible to what those paying would like. I'm not paying to join a cult, it's a club of fitness and I can do more leg lifts while you're using the kettlebells.

So who's gonna help me start a gym that'll be an answer to those Crossfit gyms. That are a bit less intense and a bit more focussed on making the gym fun and productive on your terms rather than theirs? Kickstart It!

Didn't watch the video yet. Wanted to reply to the subtitle of the post for all of the viewers of the video/thread to see

The real world is unfair/violent at times. We will never achieve Utopia. A woman should have the tools (be it a gun or otherwise) to defend herself if the need arises. Its far better to have something you don't need than to need something you don't have.

I am not saying that is the only solution. We should "attack" the issue from both sides by trying to prevent violence in the first place.

If my better half decided to train herself to properly use a firearm and carry it around I would support that decision. Funny enough she is learning Tae Kwon Do in case "push comes to shove."

Didn't your grandmother say "never say never?" For you to decide for everyone else that guns are never the answer is against their freedom. Perhaps guns should never be the answer for YOU specifically but don't take away the possibility of your neighbor to have a gun to protect herself from rape if thats what she chooses to do.

What knife fights are really like

This video confirms what I already suspected.

Back in high school me and a bunch of other students who got high enough PSAT scores got invited to go down to the Naval Academy in Annapolis to experience a weekend orientation of the academy. I bunked with a guy from Texas who was a black belt in karate. At the time I was really into Tae Kwon Do and we got to talking about martial arts in general. One of the other guys in our room asked us how to deal with an attacker with a knife and the karate guy without pause answers, "Run."

Everyone laughed until he lifted up his shirt and showed us this ugly red scar that goes from one side of his belly to the other. Apparently, some guy had talked trash to him out on the street one day and instead of walking away he faced off against the guy. The knife came out so fast he said he never saw it coming. He got hella lucky in that the slash wasn't deep enough to hit his internal organs and that the other dude just took off running after getting the one hit in, but he was still bleeding everywhere. Some other people nearby called an ambulance and got the kid to the hospital.

Years later, my brother and I got into mixed-martial arts and used to practice defending against knife attacks. We'd wear cheap white clothing and used red markers to simulate the knife. What we learned really quickly is that even if you successfully disarmed the simulated attacker, when you looked down you had probably been cut in at least 3 different places during the attempt.

So I agree with everything in this video. Someone comes at you with a knife, you're not necessarily fucked but you need to accept that in all likelihood you're going to get cut... and that even if you succeed in incapacitating the attacker there's still a good chance you'll bleed out from the cuts you took in the process before medical attention arrives.

Hong Kong Airlines Wing Chun Training

I have a friend who was well trained in Wing Chun (male) and although yes there is some legitimacy in regards to balance, center line etc, the reality was that he was mostly effective due to the distribution of his mass/weight and often only against those who couldn't fight or more specifically didn't know how to defend.

I don't see much mass in these hostesses and given my experience, I don't believe they would be reliably effective against most decent sized untrained male opponents with this style alone, especially when the situation gets to the floor as most aggressive interactions inevitably do.

To provide a comparison, one of my friends has trained in Karate since he was 6 years old, went on to Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, a few others, then heavily into Mixed Martial Arts about 8 years ago and now trains with professional MMA fighters. As far back as a decade ago my Wing Chun (no other martial arts) friend couldn't do shit to him if his life depended on it.

Why?
Wing Chun focuses on blocking and controlling your opponents movements with pressure points and shifting your opponents weight, and this really doesn't cut it in real situations when your opponent isn't trying to hug you into submission, or when a punch just needs to slip though and connect with the base of your chin for a KO, or a lucky hit that simply takes you to the ground.

Now, I'm not saying this idea is completely dangerously delusional, i think it's a good idea in principle to train airline staff including pilots, but feel they are doing it less than effectively as they could.

The point I'm making is that any 1 martial arts is simply not effectively reliable in most confrontational situations due to most/all martial arts having a fair bit of bullshit inter-weaved with legitimate capabilities.

** If airlines are going to train/encourage hostesses to intervene with dangerous individuals they should be teaching the genuinely proven to be effective portions of various martial arts.. to which Wing Chun would play a role imo for upright close combat, but also focusing on some aspects of Judo for take-downs and take-down-defense & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for when the shit hits the mat, which are all great arts for females and males alike as technique is the key and an individuals power isn't a primary focus for any of these.

Good on them for taking the initiative.

Sometimes I'll get on my knees and tell them to punch me in the chest, and they can't do it. I'm not moving. I'm not blocking. They just can't do it.

There were teenagers in my class; of higher rank than me, even; who fit that description and were no more dangerous in sparring than these little guys. It used to really annoy me that they kept passing their belt tests without developing any skills at all.


It's funny there could actually be a thread about this.

Even fifteen years later and 70 pounds heavier, I can still knock a fucking house down with my back-turning side-kick. But I remember when my one tough instructor Marcus used to yell at me to hit him while sparring, I could never hurt him. He was a veteran of a shitty childhood and even when he put his hands behind his back, I could never hit him hard enough in the chest, stomach, kidneys, etc. to even make him blink. Of course, I was wearing gloves, but still. It was always like one of those dreams when you just can't do the thing you want to do and it always made me feel like my arms were just a couple of limp sausages.
