How not to get mugged at an ATM.

Super diamonds may replace silicon.

demon_ix says...

They have an inherently superior material that can take away the overheating problem engineers face today at every aspect of miniaturization and you're presenting a technical difficulty to the manufacturing process...

From wikipedia:
Natural blue diamonds containing boron and synthetic diamonds doped with boron are p-type semiconductors. N-type diamond films are reproducibly synthesized by phosphorus doping during chemical vapor deposition. Diode p-n junctions and UV light emitting diodes (LEDs, at 235 nm) has been produced by sequential deposition of p-type (boron-doped) and n-type (phosphorus-doped) layers.

Super diamonds may replace silicon.

joedirt says...

Um, except all modern electronics are based on semi-conductors.. which diamonds are not. Can you dope diamond wafers with III-V? Can you grow Si on diamond? Otherwise the heat dissipation is useless. Plus the whole point is growing one 12" diameter silicon slug...

The only possible application would be to take s fully processed silicon wafer and then thin the back of the wafer to insanely thin, then CVD the synthetic diamond to act as the substrate then package it in something that takes heat out better.

Christine Peterson - Humanity, Biosphere, & the Singularity

Lodurr says...

I had one of those comments that didn't survive the great database crash of 3/12/09 for this post.

I think it's the wrong assumption to think that whatever software security systems we can create will be able to contain an "intelligence explosion." The understanding we have of our security systems will, by nature, be less than the understanding that the resulting super-intelligence will have. It's like opening Pandora's Box just a crack to peek inside.

The most powerful forces above Earth's crust have been evolution and intelligence, but intelligence has been limited by evolution and evolution is limited by time. This hypothetical singularity event is essentially removing the limitations of time on the evolution of intelligence in a synthetic environment.

The other wrong assumption taken by many people is the idea that the result of a singularity event will benefit us, or that the resulting super-intelligence created will relate to us on any level. It might relate to us as well as we relate to dust mites. It's naive to think that our intelligence is so great that no future entity can be beyond our comprehension. That's the very definition the singularity--that it is beyond our comprehension. Foolish optimism is pervasive in singularity enthusiasts. Why is it considered a wise move for humanity to risk our survival on an unknown?

What New Channel? :) (Wtf Talk Post)

Zonbie says...

aha yes the *brains channel - well jonny - is it kind of you to offer, I think there are a few more out there to try, and I think you should stick with the channel - I know alot of stuff must be long in there - however you should redefine it

From the molecular biology of neurons to theories of consciousness, the Mind and Brain channel is devoted to workings of the brain and its emergent mind. All videos in this channel offer some insight into the workings of brains (organic or synthetic). Videos of trippy optical illusions and Derren Brown mind tricks are generally not acceptable - unless, of course, they contain some explanation of how the brain is being manipulated to produce the demonstrated results.

to include any hypnosis or other trick, optical illusion - that while no prehaps expalaining the effect, requires the brain for the trickery to work.

This should be a fantastic channel! Take out the bit that requires some explaining, and you can have a channel choc full of brainteasers, opticals, manipulation, experiments, hypnosis, and medical related stuff - it'll be great

In the meantime...just as a side note - no to *zombie channel, fun, but dark and horrowshow cover that nicely

The Memristor Will Replace RAM and the Hard Drive

jonny says...

I dunno, lucky - not that uneducated. I think the analogy has more to do with the claims made by the YT poster in the description. And I've heard enough "change the world" claims in computer science/engineering before to take 'em all with a grain of salt now.

As for the claim that "scientists are discovering the mathematic equations used to govern memristors are similiar to those which govern synapses in the brain" - that's pretty ridiculous. On the one hand, if all he means is that there is a current discharge in the device when it's depolarized, well, there are lots of biological and synthetic devices that do that. If on the other hand, he means they have similar voltage-gated ion channels that produce a specific response to a huge variety of inputs that are not at all clearly understood by neuroscience, well, then he's just blowing smoke.

I'm not saying it's not a cool tech, but claims of "changing the world" are rather silly for a device whose mechanisms aren't even totally understood, much less how to mass produce them with consistent properties.

btw - why Kurzweil in the tags? Is he involved in developing these? Or because it's something he'd appreciate?

And you have some epistemological view that is supported by pure logic and no assumption? Kant's Critique of Pure Reason pointed out the limitations of the empirical explanations of science, and Quine's Rejection of the analytic-synthetic distinction destroyed logical positivism.

So far any philosophic or religious understanding lacks exhaustive explanation of everything. Every mode of truth has been struck down as incomplete or lacking in the necessity for it to make the claim that it is objective in nature. Surely the person in the video isn't a fuckwit.

Edit: Removing what could be interpreted as a slam. Thanks bluecliff

Absolutely. One of the best ones is dead. I'll go through them all more thoroughly, but you should put this into your playlist to replace the discarded dupe.

Any video in the brain channel should provide some info about how brains or minds work. Basically, the idea is to filter out demonstrations of mental behavior and include explanations of it. I didn't want the channel to be a collection of card tricks, optical illusions, and Derren Brown style mind tricks. Manipulating a sensory system (however wonderfully surprising), doesn't necessarily help describe the system. Of course, certain demonstrations of mental or neurological activity do help define their function. A behavioral change arising after some specific neuropatholgy, for instance, at the very least gives some indication of how that neural system is organized.

Any vid describing animal, or synthetic, minds and brains is welcome, so long as it helps inform the viewer about how such systems work.

Just wondering if there's anything in http://www.videosift.com/playlists/schmawy/Animal-Intelligence that would qualify for your channel?

^people become rich because they contribute to society, unless we are talking about fraud which is illegal no matter what system you are in.

the man who invented synthetic insulin is a billionaire who has a $240 million dollar yacht--and hes also saved the lives of tens of millions of people. why should he give a dime to your lazy, uncreative ass or anyone like you? he has already saved the lives of more people then you will ever meet. if we are going to talk "equality" you owe this world much more than he, or any other smart, motivated millionaire who has developed a creative product. what have you contributed to the human race?

so far, your only contribution has been ignorant economic comments and a philosophy of slavery which leads to misery and despotism. our forefathers would gladly give their lives to end yours. you should be deeply ashamed of every word that comes from your mouth.

The Maltese Falcon: Greatest, Most advanced Yacht Ever

imstellar28 says...

17.9 million people have diabetes in the US alone. He contributed to the development of synthetic insulin, which has helped alleviate the suffering of millions of people. How many people have alleviated the suffering of even a dozen people, much less a million?

This guy gets a yacht and 17.9 million people get to live better lives, not really a terrible deal.

Why should he give a dime to charity? He has spent the majority of his life improving the lives of other people.

"We've also shown in lab environments that we can create life from non-life materials."
I missed that development. When did that occur? I've read about artificial "cells" that are capable of single protein synthesis. That's a long way from a building a self-replicating, self-sustaining organism from scratch. I would think that sort of achievement would have made the newspaper. Then again, maybe not my local newspaper.

Perhaps I jumped the shark a little bit on that, we are very very close however.

This man is the synthetic life pioneer, hes getting real close.
