Obama Finally Lays Into the Opposition to Stimulus

8296 says...

What really needs to happen is for the government to manage money more responsibly. There isn't a need for tax cuts and there really isn't a need for an increase in taxes. Stop pressing money, stop spending an astronomical amount of military and wham - we'll be doing at least a shred better.

Many European countries have high tax rates of which they also have better school systems and better health care overall. We may have better schools theoretically ; but only if you are able to afford their astronomical prices. Same goes for healthcare if you're one of those many that seem to have millions and millions or one of the 1% that has billions.

This country is just in not ready for a more social democracy - there is too much corruption, the structures (occupational, class, etc)are vastly unbalanced and unchecked and too many people in this country are much too closed-minded to even see how it even effects themselves. Too much of the "majority" think in terms of black & white and launch attacks with generalized criticisms almost seemingly pre-programmed into their synapses; like our good pal' quantummushroom.

The Memristor Will Replace RAM and the Hard Drive

jonny says...

I dunno, lucky - not that uneducated. I think the analogy has more to do with the claims made by the YT poster in the description. And I've heard enough "change the world" claims in computer science/engineering before to take 'em all with a grain of salt now.

As for the claim that "scientists are discovering the mathematic equations used to govern memristors are similiar to those which govern synapses in the brain" - that's pretty ridiculous. On the one hand, if all he means is that there is a current discharge in the device when it's depolarized, well, there are lots of biological and synthetic devices that do that. If on the other hand, he means they have similar voltage-gated ion channels that produce a specific response to a huge variety of inputs that are not at all clearly understood by neuroscience, well, then he's just blowing smoke.

I'm not saying it's not a cool tech, but claims of "changing the world" are rather silly for a device whose mechanisms aren't even totally understood, much less how to mass produce them with consistent properties.

btw - why Kurzweil in the tags? Is he involved in developing these? Or because it's something he'd appreciate?

The instamatic focal point bringing damage to your boroughs
Be some brothers from the east with some beats that be thorough
Got the solar gravitation so I'm bound to pull it
I gets down like brothers are found ducking from bullets
Gun control means using both hands in my land
Where it's all about the cautious livin'
Migrating to a higher form of consequence, compliments
Of strugglin', that shouldn't be notable,
Man every word I say should be a hip hop quotable.

I'm sick of bitches shakin' asses
I'm sick of talkin' about blunts,
Sick of Versace glasses,
Sick of slang,
Sick of half-ass awards shows,
Sick of name brand clothes.
Sick of R&B bitches over bullshit tracks,
Cocaine and crack
Which brings sickness to blacks,
Sick of swoll' head rappers
With their sicker-than raps
Clappers and gats
Makin' the whole sick world collapse
The facts are gettin' sick
Even sicker perhaps
Stickabush to make a bundle to escape this synapse

The Origins of Antiseptic Surgery - Lord Lister

schmawy says...

Yeah the notion of experiencing profound pain and suffering, yet not remembering it is an interesting one. Given the complexity of our brain, and it's ability to record stimuli without our conscious awareness make me wonder if somehow, somewhere in our synapses there IS a recording of that traumatic event. Sort of a chemically repressed memory? An interesting study would be to play a song in the background during the procedure, then play it back among five songs and ask the patient which they liked the least.

Wireless neckband allows first voiceless phone call

Art says...

"It translates brain synapses and neural skull vibrations into audible speech frequencies."
"Yeah I got one of them too. It's called a mouth. Whats your point?"

That last bit is the part that scares me. My head is the only place I can go where nobody can hear me. If this is perfected then thought crimes may become a very real thing.

Quantum Consciousness (Stuart Hameroff)

gwiz665 says...

God in the Gaps - we don't understand all about quantum theory fully, we don't understand consciousness fully - thus there must be some "higher" connetion between the two.

I'm studying AI at the moment and up until the 80's people thought that the brain worked like a computer, or that tha brain could be simulated in a computer with a classical AI - this cannot be, because a preprogrammed AI must've had all inputs predicted, so that it has some rules and laws with which to process them. Newer theories use a neural network, which is able to process previously unknown inputs and is a highly parallel and analog type of processing. A neuron is not necessarily simply a switch, it can be a whole array of values. Furthermore the connections between neurons (synapses) have "weights" which determine how much influence a given neuron has on the network at whole.

There are different approaches to what intelligience is, and that is basis for any theory of AI. Some say, Turing for instance, that an entity is intelligent when input and out put so to say "fits" - how the computation is done is irrelevant, but if the result is right it must be intelligent. This is called engineering-AI.

Overlapping that is a psycological AI, which is divided into two groups. Group A says that the cognitive processes must be computational in nature, such that they can be copied. Group B (of philosophical AI) believes the emotional, intentional and conscious can be copied computationally as well.

I heard no real argument for quantum consciousness here, just that they both are "uncertain" and have an element of randomness.

This dynamic of personal taste transmission thru submission, is one of the reasons I am even here.....

I do not like public masturbation, jack-ass, ambulance chasing, political agendas reaaaaaaaaaaaly piss me off, etc.)....but defer any who with these, thematically and skillfully, spin a series of otherwise boring or diversive viddies, and cause the synapse to wiggle.....

some folks love to engage, others remain detached...i.e. real world

I have always been for the queue being a completely RANDOM order weigh-station....this eliminates the first page hotter/colder/snowball's "chance in hell its posted" dynamic

Jesus Camp : Kids Worshipping to a George Bush Picture

pass.the.grog. says...

To jump in on the conversation...

I think this goes beyond indoctrination. Sure, some of these kids will grow up, spark up their first jay, and realize that the world isn't quite so serious, but many of them won't. I make it a hobby of mine to converse with evangelical types wherever I run across them and try out logic on them. It generally doesn't work regardless of age. And this is all even more frightening if you watch the rest of the interview with the camp leader on the movie's website - www.jesuscampthemovie.com - basically, the woman is training Christian suicide bombers. (a slight exageration... but only slight)

Along the lines of daphne's computer comment... Think of brain cells as being able to connect a limited amount of synapses with each other. With repetition, these connections become more and more effortless to the point where it is habitual. As these are more and more embedded in the brain, it becomes harder to form new synapses and break old ones without some sort of event triggering the release of the old ones. My point being, they hard wire the brain to accept only certain synapses while rejecting others. I'm sure memes fit in here somewhere...

or maybe its too late and im rambling at this point. but it's the internet, and im anonymous. so i don't mind.

long story short - this looks like a great movie. Also check out Hell House http://www.hellhousemovie.com/hellhouse/index.html if this topic (christian fundie indoctrination) fascinates you.
