D30 orange putty absorbs shocks instantly by turning solid

Sniper007 says...

It's cool for certain impacts and such... but they actually used it in a BOOT. Do you realize how STUPID that is? This material (3do) does not protect AT ALL against CRUSHING. If you drop a 50+ pound block on your foot, it's going to get crushed unless two things occur:

1) The block is traveling at a high speed, and
2) IMMEDIATELY after impact, the block is picked up or deflected.

I have steel toe boots, and I actually use the steel toes as a tool. I set heavy objects on them, so they are not flush with the floor. This allows you to get your fingers under the object to lift once you are in position. 3do would squish like jelly in this scenario, and most scenarios I can think of involving foot protection.

This is another example of the dumbing down of America. Teach people to use the tool properly. I can see the example given earlier of 10 serious injuries a day jumping to 60+ superficial injuries a day absolutely happening. As an engineer, I applaud the effort and the idea behind it. As a craftsman, I say, learn to use the damn saw properly!

An uncle of mine, with over 10 years of experience in fine carpentry, slipped due to some sawdust and opened his wrist down through a main artery. He was off for over 3 months, and out several thousand dollars in medical and lost wages even with Workers Comp. With this product, he would have fixed the saw, got a bandaid, and finished out his shift.

Even people who know what their doing can make a mistake. This isn't the dumbing down of anything, it's a safer way to work. Hard hats, steel toed boots, airbags in cars... all things that have almost nothing to do with the proper use of anything.

Why do we even have a down vote? (Sift Talk Post)

rottenseed says...

to say that it doesn't deserve that many votes is a declaration on your part that the voting system is flawed here. Some people over use it. I haven't seen that with MGR, but with more "bleeding hearts" on the site that don't like to see puppies being kicked by steel-toed boots. I for one usually just not vote if I think its crap. Rarely do I feel the need to dv. The control of content by the user is what makes this site aweshums. I would like to keep my right to downvote if I have to flex.

Verizon strikes again...

Jezus....staggering. pho3n1x, you've got the root of the problem: the average person sucks at decimals. Sad, but true.

Given the flap about this, I'm amazed that no-one, even some enterprising young managerial whiz kid with and eye on the top of the management heap, hasn't kicked this problem in the nuts with a steel toe boot.

I mean, how hard is it to have their developers write a simple app that takes the current rate and spits out an answer that matches the customer's query no matter how they phrase it (per kilo/mega bit/byte Canada/USA overage/regular etc)? All displayed answers in dollars or cents. That's an entry level task for crying out loud....for a manager or a developer.
