Hitchens Brothers Debate If Civilization Can Survive W/O God

Lawdeedaw says...

>> ^CyberViperDriver:
His assertion that if morality changes then in the future we as different cultures would do things we find offensive and be fine with them makes the case for the absurdity of religious morality.
History CLEARLY shows the evolution by cultural means of morality... there are more then a few examples of things having been considered morally acceptable in the past that are generally considered reprehensible now.
You can even see examples of wide moral divergence in the modern world. The easiest example would be cultures in which it is morally acceptable to cover females from head to foot and remove the clitoris of infant females. so it is clear that morality is much more subjective than theists or deists are willing to admit.
He seems to believe that "moral" acts have always been static, not so. not even two centuries ago it was normal and acceptable even in the western world for a 40 year old man to betroth, marry and copulate with females as young as 12. The notion of a perceived age of consent is a VERY young concept and yet is embraced as a part of this perceived moral constant.
I wont even go into the many acts that are justified in the bible that are rightly viewed as absolutely morally unacceptable in the modern world.

I would argue that religion controls morality less than people think; rather, morality is controlled by finite resources (Which education falls under, because without a university or resources, education withers and dies...etc.)

For example, Spartans slammed deformed babies against cliffs. Nations sacrificed humans to appease volcano deities. People danced to appease farm gods and men had sex with 10 year old girls to ensure the human race procreated. All these "horrors" were caused by survival instincts and lack of education (Resources.)

Now, fast forward. Add vast resources, like technology, to the world. Then examine communities. Nowadays we cannot rely on our own next-door neighbors. Why? Well, technology (a resource) has broken up communities and allowed everyone their distance. We no longer rely on each other because we don't need to. Oh, freedom this, freedom that. Bah. Freedom = antithesis of community.

One example of resources/morality would be an island that had a very advanced culture. When trees ran out, they started eating each other. What changed in less than 100 years? (Hint, resources.)

I will say there are a myriad number of contributing factors--religions, resources, social growth, etc.--that will affect "morality," but then, to blame a natural instinct (Belief a higher power) is to exaggerate cause and effect. Religion is evil, yes... And so are people.

The Tea Party History for Dummies

Lawdeedaw says...

Of course Lincoln liked slavery well enough when it came to his preserving the union. But does that make him a monster? No, for the same reason Africans were not monsters for selling their own into slavery, a widely common practice at the time.

It was a different time. Spartans used to smash babies against cliffs if those babies had the slightest defect! What monsters. Of course that was back when. I am sure parties in Greece lament those days and suffer for them!

And of course, the Tea Party is dead wrong on everything. They are all racists--which is why I disagree with their views on the right to fair trial, balancing our budget (Of course they have no idea how to do that without cutting services, which means they are stupid,) and tea regalia.

And while we are mocking dummies, let's mock the Democrats and Republicans.

Money evolved from a single cell organism into two inhumane political systems that love each other because they secure each other. This all occured during the Big Queef. One system would be threatened by other systems, so both pretend to vote a significantly different way while simply compromising America away. After all, vote for the enemy of my enemy... If only it were not for the Big Queef...

Horrible Histories - Wife Swap: Athenians Vs Spartans

Skeeve says...

This is great, but it doesn't even scratch the surface of how crazy being a Spartan wife was.

First was the marriage, wherein the bride would have her head shaved, be dressed in men's clothes then made to lay alone in the dark on a pallet waiting for her husband (who she may have never met) to abduct her, have his way with her, then return her to her parent's house.

This was the start of a marriage which, for the first few years, consisted of the husband showing up at night once in a while for sex and otherwise having no real contact. After the husband reached the age of 30 he was allowed to live outside of the men's barracks so he would finally be able to live with his wife. Things didn't get much more "normal" from there though...

As the Spartan marriage was primarily for procreation, it was not unheard of for an older man to give permission for younger men to have sex with his wife in order for him to have strong, healthy children (the marriage's duty was to bear strong children for the state after all). There is no evidence that Spartan women were opposed to this though. They had greater rights than many other women throughout history with respect to property ownership (it is estimated that women owned 35% of all Spartan holdings), they probably received benefits from these arrangements. According to ancient historians like Plutarch these Spartan customs ensured that adultery, illegitimacy and prostitution were nonexistent in Sparta.

Further, unlike Athenian women who wore heavy, concealing clothes and were rarely seen outside the house, Spartan women wore short dresses and went where they pleased.

So being a Spartan wife was quite the interesting life. It could be difficult, but the benefits were a greater freedom, autonomy, wealth and power than any other women in the ancient world.

Halo Reach - "Unto the Breach" ViDoc.

Shepppard says...

<nerd>

Reach was actually the planet that the spartan II's and other marines were trained on, it was actually a human colony and none of the storyline is going to involve any "Ring worlds", and as such, the tags should be changed.

It should also be noted that the fight that's taking place in this game takes place before the Pillar of Autumn makes its jump to slipspace and ends up discovering halos.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find evidence in history of a war caused by religion. I've looked (hint: not the Crusades). Athenians fought Spartans, Americans fought Americans, Hutus murdered Tutsis. War does just fine without religion.

Religion is never the obvious cause, but is constantly an underlying current that drives the wars. India/Pakistan, Israel/Palestine, US/Afghanistan/Iraq, to name a few that are recent / ongoing.

Religion is a unifying force, binding the followers of the same faith into one group, but is also a dividing force, separating different groups of believers from one-another. It is a lot easier to kill the "other", which is what someone of a different religion is automatically.

Nationality is second to that, but that is based on a physical fact (land), and not a theoretical one (my invisible sky-daddy is better than yours).

Zero Punctuation: The Second Annual E3 Hype Massacre

Shepppard says...

Ehh.. I find myself again disagreeing with the "Review" this week on some points.

Assassins Creed 2 looks pretty damn good to me, Supposed to be bigger then the first game, new executions, able to assassinate two people at once now and Leo Da Vinci inventing things for you.

Saboteur wasn't mentioned, but it wasn't exactly unveiled at this E3, GTA style game based in france during WWII, able to climb buildings, and the art style seems interesting to me.

Mass Effect 2 in production, using the data from your first game to bring the second game to life, if you killed certain characters off in the first they won't appear in the second, new weapons, ect.

I've been playing the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta, and nobody talks..character wise anyway, and the gameplay is pretty good.

His Beatles rock band point is that it's just a stupid name..

Final Fantasy XIV has next to no info on it yet, except that it's going to be online, So I don't understand why he's critiquing it already, other then the fact that the generally hates Mmorpgs. (Side note, I'm excited to see what they're going to be doing, it's FF11's spiritual predecessor, and FF11 was fantastic until WoW came out and showed that the slow paced combat was outdated.)

Halo Reach seems like it could be very interesting, because it's potentially the first time that you DON'T play as a lone spartan if the game is going to be based off the books, and the planet itself is supposed to be mostly open fields and forest.. again if it's based off the books.

And ODST seems like it'll be great, you're not on a linear storyline and you're able to explore all of New Mombasa, they've pushed the halo 3 engine more then they knew they could and have fantastic looking results, not to mention new features since you're no longer a super-soldier, so you don't have a feeling of complete comfort when you're going through the game because they've essentially reverted back to the halo 1 system of minor "Shields" (Basically called Stamina in ODST) after which your health takes damage.

I dunno, to me this years E3 was actually pretty good, it's talking about titles that don't seem like they're bound to fail from the get-go (lookin at you, Destroy All Humans 3 & Damnation)
