Seventeen Seconds of Fuel Remained

BSR says...

I was 14 when they landed on the moon. I remember watching it live on TV. I was fascinated by the space program and I still am. I eventually moved from NJ to Cape Canaveral in 1980. Got see all but 5 space shuttle launches in person, plus many rocket launches. It was a great time.

*LIVE FEED** Final Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (Science Talk Post)

jerickJ says...

The space shuttle had lift off. Finally. After several weeks of delays, National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided to break with custom and the Space Shuttle launched. Though the mission was delayed for a number of weeks, the Shuttle Endeavour recently lifted off the launch pad and thundered to the skies. It is the final journey of the Endeavour.

On Atheism (Blog Entry by dag)

village1diot says...

Just the other day I was watching a space shuttle launch and got this sickening feeling. As the shuttle got higher and higher, this loneliness and insignificance started creeping through me. Thinking about the people on the ship that were so small compared to the vastness of space they were entering, triggered something inside me. I can't really explain it, but the feeling lasted until I fell asleep that night. I have never felt that way before, nor do I want to again. Just for a little while, I started thinking how nice it would be to believe in a god right now. At minimum, it would at least give me some comfort in thinking somebody was there when I was feeling so lonely.

Now I look back and have been thinking about it. Would that actually make me feel better(believing in a god)? Short-term, I think it probably would have. But in the long run, I think being honest to myself by trying to understand why I felt that way, is much more healthy. Having a god would just give me comfort so I can feel better, without an understanding of why I was feeling that way. Making myself mentally lazy would not help me. In effect, I think God is a placebo, and doesn't do anything but make you think you are OK. He doesn't actually fix anything. It's just the idea of a warm cozy blanket on a cold winter night, not an actual blanket.

I hope that made sense, I am up way too late.

INCREDIBLE video of space shuttle ascent

Amazing stuff, but... that editor needs to grow up a bit... lens flare, really... he added lens flare to footage of a space shuttle launch

I'm guessing you're talking about the sequence near ~3:00, and not the genuine lens flares during the opening sequences?

Amazing stuff, but... that editor needs to grow up a bit... lens flare, really... he added lens flare to footage of a space shuttle launch (well, the prelim anyway)? And some other bits and bobs demonstrates that while these teams take some amazing footage, professional editors they ain't.

Who Stole the Space Shuttle Plans ?

spoco2 says...

Yeah, they didn't steal the plans... geeze

They are different, and the scientists wanted to build a smaller craft, but the powers that be wanted to ensure that the USSR looked to be as powerful as the US and so ended up with this near identical design.

Their test craft, the OK-GLI was actually better than the US one, because it could take off under its own power rather than being carried up by an aircraft.

It's fascinating, and quite sad that so much money was spent on the venture, only for it to have ONE... one UNMANNED flight into orbit before being canceled.

That's an obscene use of money right there. (Although I'd much rather have countries spending money on failed space programs than war... but that's just me)

This does bring back memories though, I remember getting up early (in Australia) to see the first Space Shuttle launch (Columbia) in... erm ahh, there we are, 1981... It was a beautiful thing

And I do remember the stuff about the Soviet program, and how very, very similar, and yet slightly different and odd it looked.

So, thanks for this

thank you for your thoughtful and reasoned response.

Sometimes, Doc_M, controversies really only have one side to them, with the "other side" being upheld by ill-informed or even delusional people. Kinda like the Flat Earth Society.

Yes, some people really do believe that the world is flat, despite considerable evidence to the contrary.

Just because a website "promotes its own agenda" (thus discrediting it with you) does not mean the factual evidence backed up with studies, research, and experiments are suddenly null and void. Sure, if the studies were faked or no sources were cited I would be suspicious. That's not the case, though.

The most damning part of this news clip is when it points out that the EPA scientists THEMSELVES are dissenting against the EPA's ruling. It's a giant cue to even the most uninformed person to sit up and take notice that an agency's own employees are saying "whoa whoa there that ain't right." I'm no water expert, but those EPA scientists are, and would know better than me whether or not fluoride in my drinking water is good or bad.

It's sorta like the dissenting NASA engineers that were forced by ignorant upper management (unaware of the dangers of cold temperatures and O-Rings) to sign off on the Challenger space shuttle launch. And look how great that turned out.
