Crow goes sledging

Alpine Coaster in Mieders, Austria (with no brakes!!)

holymackerel013 says...

I take my family up to Big Bear CA in the summer months at least once a year. There is an alpine sled that comes down a ski slope there. It's probably only about 200-300 yards long and it simply zip-zags down the hillside.....that's what I was imagining in my mind before I watched the video. HOLY MACKEREL!!! This thing is awesome. My little daughters love that alpine sled in Big Bear, but this coaster is a another beast entirely. It looks like so much fun; however, I don't think there is any chance at all that I would go down that thing without applying the breaks.

Getting your dog to tow you on a skateboard

bamdrew says...

I've done this before; I needed to get the dog accustom to the sound of the skateboard rolling up behind her, because first try she just kept running fast and faster, nervously looking back behind her every 10 seconds.

She was uncomfortable with the new (and loud) sound chasing right behind her, and got past it and had fun after about 10 min. of just rolling around and playing fetch... then it was dog-sledding time!

Olbermann Special Comment - Libya and The 5 Second Rule

Matthu says...

My girlfriend works with troubled Inuit youths (a group filled with intense despair, but thats another story), she told me a story about why so many of the Inuits in Canada despise white people.

The story goes that awhile back, not sure when, the Canadian army came to their settlements and put down all their sled-dogs. The Canadian governments official reason was that all the dogs were rabid. But another reason some people put forth is that the government wanted to issue SIN #'s to all the Inuits, and that was very hard to do when the Inuits were very nomadic, often traveling super far, with their sleddogs, to hunt caribou. And they did issue SIN #'s shortly after.

(My gf saw pictures of the Inuits holding their dead dogs, BTW)

I'm getting to my point: After the govt massacred their dogs, they built two grocery stores and two gas stations. That's pretty sweet... But were the dogs even rabid to begin with? That's the controversy.

And so I see a lot of parallel with American Imperialism in the Middle East. The hubbub and the murmurs are about the truth behind these wars. Are we there to free repressed Libyans? Or are we there to steal their oil? Well... Maybe it's both. What's so bad about seeing an unhappy people struggle to free itself from an oppressive govt, coming to their aid, helping them to build the foundations of democracy, and then... taking a little precious oil for our troubles?

OK that's it, devils advocate out.

FUCK AMERICAN IMPERIALISM.

Tractor Pulling using 3700hp via 18 cylinders

BoneRemake says...

From Wikipedia-

Tractor pulling, also known as power pulling, is a motorsport competition, popular in America, Europe and Australia, which requires modified tractors to pull a heavy sledge (sled) along a 100 metre track, with the winner being the tractor that pulls the sledge farthest. The sport is known as the worlds most powerful motorsport, due to the multi engined modified tractor pullers.

All tractors, in their respective classes, pull a set weight in the sledge. When a tractor gets to the end of the 100 metre (300 feet) track this is known as a “full pull”. When more than one tractor completes the course, more weight is added to the sledge, and the winner is the one who can pull the sledge the farthest.

The sledge is known as a weight transfer sledge. This means that as it is pulled down the track, the weight is transferred (linked with gears to the sledge’s wheels) from over the rear axles and towards the front of the sledge. In front of the rear wheels, there is a ‘pan’. This is essentially a metal plate and as the weight moves over this the resistance builds. The further the tractor pulls the sledge, the harder it gets.

The most powerful tractors, such as those in the 4.5 modified class in Europe, can produce over 10,000 bhp.

How to get disqualified from a dog sled race

Fur Rondy World Championship
Statement from Blayne Streeper on events in the 2nd heat of the race.

Yesterday evening following the second heat of the Fur Rondy, I was informed by the Race Marshall that I was being disqualified from the race for unsportsman like conduct.

This incident happened on Cordova Hill as I caught Luke Sampson. I hollered, "Luke Trail Luke," several times. He did not hear me and as my leaders reached him and attempted to pass he jumped off his sled and started running along side, interfering with my leaders.

As my team caught and passed Luke at the top of the hill I slapped his arm to get his attention and hollered, "Luke, Pay Fu---ng attention!" The way it was perceived by some in the crowd was that I was assaulting Luke. I felt that as an experienced driver that I had an obligation to advise this driver of his failure to pay attention and that he caused a safety risk to my team and that of others. At the finish of the race the Race Marshall came to me at the truck asking what had happened and that a trail official had phoned her and stated that I had punched Luke and yelled profanities. The Race Marshall also contacted Luke Sampson, who refused to file a protest.

I feal that the Race Marshall has over reacted on this incident and the penalty of disqualification from the race is too severe. I know the safety of our dogs is of the first concern for all of us. The dogs are defenseless and count on us to care for and protect them.

I regret using profanity during the race and apologize to all of the fans that I may have offended and to my friend Luke Sampson.

100 Sled Dogs Slaughtered by Outdoor Adventure Company

100 Sled Dogs Slaughtered by Outdoor Adventure Company

WKB says...

Anyone upset by this should really consider adopting an abandoned dog. The deaths of these sled dogs are indeed sad and tragic, but don't forget about the thousands of dogs killed legally every day because they simply don't have a home. They fall to a needle instead of a bullet, but I doubt that is much consolation to them.

The story only came out because the manager of the company who raised the dogs and then killed them all himself with a knife and bullets, went to get disability from the gov't.

The story only came out because of his PTSD claim.
