Even without any skunk apes to see, it’s a great scenic train ride.
I took it with my parents in the early 80s on one of the days they run the old steam engine train. I think they still do a few times a year. Just beautiful back then….almost completely undeveloped the entire ride, then Silverton was a quaint old West themed town.
Good times….good times.

We have a steam train through the redwoods near us called the Skunk Train, an old logging rail that’s now for tourists. It’s a nice day trip into the woods between Ft Bragg and Willits, sometimes with costumed performances.
There’s another awesome one just inland from Santa Cruz with a redwood loop track in the mountains and a trip from the woods to the boardwalk (and back) on offer.
The Durango to Silverton (Colorado) steam train was another memorable trip, I went around 1980.

All gorgeous and fun rides. If you have the chance, ride a steam train.

Visited my brother there in 2006 and we took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima. And you're right, they're a lot of fun. Just super cool. Definitely a different type of experience than say, this -- although sticking your head out a window and getting coal embers in your eye has its own charm.

WTF do a bunch of people from Kansas care about what's going on in Silverton Oregon?? I live in Oregon, and I could care less he's a transgender. Who the fuck are they to dictate what we do in OUR state?? I have a good mind to go up there and fuck with these assholes just for kicks. This really pisses me off!!
