Hey, at least he wasn't running naked through the streets, screaming and attacking cars while masturbating furiously. . . this time.

C'mon.. the look on his face at 2:13 is waaay more disturbing than the silhouette of his ballsack as he pounds his fists on the concrete in the meltdown video.

Gecko Saves His Friend From Snake

MilkmanDan says...

>> ^ForgedReality:

Anybody know what kind of geckos they are? I was thinking tokays, but the tail looks different. Definitely related at least. And that snake, is it some kind of green viper?

The people are speaking Thai, and Thai geckos are tokay/toukay, so I bet that is correct. Their tail does look a bit different -- most of the geckos here have a tail that gets very wide right past where it connects to the body, sort of cardioid in shape, or like an elongated second head.

As for the snake, looks like a tree viper of some kind to me, based on near the end where it extends and you can get a clear silhouette of the head. There are lots of red-throated tree vipers in my area in Thailand, but they have a more brownish green color with a geometric pattern on their backs (plus the red area around the throat) whereas this one looked pretty solidly and smoothly green. Dunno.

I'll have my wife watch and see if the people in the recording say anything definitive.

***edit:
She said they are definitely toukay, which as far as I know is just gecko in Thai. She said the snake is called a "ngoo keyow" in Thai, which just translates as "green snake", so not particularly helpful. Here is a web page with some likely suspects: http://www.siam-info.de/english/snakes_crotalidae.html

Green tree viper is probably correct, but that applies to quite a few distinct species. All are poisonous but some only mildly so for humans. Not sure if the geckos/toukay would be resistant though.

Zero Punctuation: Portal 2

Oh, and I love Yahtzee all the more for his comment on TF2 hats. I remember when Valve went on and on about restricted colour palettes, instantly recognisable silhouettes and setting...then they went on to add a bunch of hats that shat all over that philosophy and my framerate.

QFT I hate the hats in TF2. It completely ruined the game. Valve indeed set that game out to have clear class silhouettes and color palettes indeed and when everyone started running around looking so odd you couldn't tell what was what until you were fired upon, it completely ruined the game. I used to play so much TF2, played probably about as much as I did the original TF. But now I never touch the game and I hear the community is quite a bit smaller as others have left the game. If they would release a server option to remove all that hat fluff, I'd hop back on and set the browser to only find servers with that option.

Portal was the indy game I knew was going to be huge before anybody else did

Portal 2 was the blockbuster sequel that I knew was going to be underwhelming before anybody else did.

Boy was I surprised. Totally amazing, loved every minute. It never took me long to find those tiny patches of white 100 metres above me, so all that focus testing totally worked. Made me feel all kinds of smart too. The original had more charm, but the sequel is a better game.

Mechanical Computer - 1953

MarineGunrock says...

Actually, the fire control rooms had more than 20 people all operating in a room the size of a small McDonald's dining area. I looked for pictures, but in the USS North Carolina, they have silhouettes of the operators huddles around the computers and it's mind-boggling how they got it all done. Ah, here it is: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_KuYLyRjiSR8/SfXkK4QJYEI/AAAAAAAAFbQ/egYSw3kQhfo/DSC_2338.JPG

>> ^spawnflagger:

Really fascinating videos, I watched all 7 parts. I wonder how much the whole computer weighed?
Seems like it would be a reliable device, as long as it's well greased, and the 3+ operators are well trained.
Of course nowadays a single chip smaller than a fingernail could achieve equal results with 0 operators, but an electronic computer in 1953 would have been much larger and much less reliable (transistor tubes tend to burn out) and required more energy than equivalent to feeding a few humans.

Fountain Lady was in the same boat. No one knew (or cared) who that blurry silhouette on the video was until she decided to go on TV and threaten the mall with legal action.
Keeping quiet might have kept her criminal record from going public as well. I hope she wasn't trying to keep those felony charges secret. =X

I don't know, I give her more credit than that. She didn't start giving interviews or go on the today show to lessen her public humiliation.

Her civil suit will be centered around the grief caused by that humiliation, so anything she can do to amplify her grief now will translate into gravy further on. However, this only works as long as she doesn't appear to be courting further abasement, which is why she pretends to be sort of dumb. A cunning plan.
