Police Fire On Men Women and Children w/ Non Lethal Rounds

chingalera says...

The po po in Cali are shell-shocked forever after Watts Riot, Compton's Cafeteria Riot, Sunset Strip curfew riots, the Berkeley riots, the White Night gay riots, the 92'Los Angeles riots(Rodney King),the Staples Center/Championship riot, the 2000' Riots in Santa Cruz~

Anaheim Police, afraid to be added to the list sought to quash a potential mob with rubber bullets and puppy-dogs. Hmmmm....all that got burned was a trash dumpster? Shit man, these folks looked predominately Hispanic which is probably why it never escalated into burning down homes and businesses in the immediate area....Pride of ownership and respect for personal property.

The Truth About Introverts

MilkmanDan says...

As an introvert also, one way that I've tried to explain it to some of my friends and acquaintances who are extroverts is to say that I'd draw a distinction between anti-social and asocial. Certainly some introverts can be anti-social -- they generally dislike social situations, usually because they feel uncomfortable in them.

In contrast, I'd say that my definition of asocial is someone who is essentially neutral on social situations; they feel no compulsion to go seek out social interaction, but they aren't necessarily opposed to it when it does happen.

I have been asocial as long as I can remember. I was always perfectly happy doing my own thing by myself when I was a kid. Only child, living in the country, no neighbors in walking distance. In grade school, I had lots of friends and was fairly "popular", but I didn't feel any specific need to hang out with other kids all the time; I'd still run off and do my own thing. Around grade 7-8, I was still the same me, but I started to notice that the things I was and had been interested in weren't popular or acceptable anymore.

That didn't initially bother me, until the cliques and pressure cooker that is High School kicked in. The standard High School struggles pushed me way further into the realms of being anti-social. I basically decided that 95% of people were scum, and that figuring out who the 5% of people who weren't scum wasn't worth the effort.

I think that a chunk of that gets better in the senior year of High School, and then the difference between HS and going to college is night and day. I could have been comfortable returning to socializing right away in college, but I was still pretty shell-shocked. I still had a pretty grim outlook on humanity, which is a shame because I now realize that I should/could have been quicker to adjust my attitude.

By now, I'm still fully asocial in that I feel essentially no need to seek out social interaction, but I do enjoy meeting and getting to know new people and find that there are very few people that I dislike -- almost the exact opposite of my old 95%/5% evaluation. I'll never be the type that wants to go out and hob-nob with friends or random people every day, but I certainly wouldn't describe myself as anti-social anymore.

Brave Kitten Stands Up to Huge Dog

hpqp says...

I dunno if the kitteh knows it, but the dog is definitely just playing. The kitten gets well within its range on several occasions without risking anything. Kitteh does look a little shell-shocked towards the end (deafening barks might do that to such a frail little being).

Gulf War: The Battle of 73 Eastings

vaporlock says...

Believe it or not, I was there a few days after this happened. Pretty freaky stuff. The part of the story that they don't mention in this segment is that the outdated, poorly maintained Iraqi tanks where from the 1970's and half the size of the ultra-modern American tanks (using Depleted Uranium rounds). Not to mention that the Iraqi troops where already "shell shocked", half starved, highly demotivated (probably not even in the tanks), and for the most part, just waiting to surrender. I'm sure that American tank crews were "shocked" to find them and did perform well, it's just it was in no way an even match.

Mothers Sick Punishment For Bad Grades (Dark Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

Horrible case indeed... truly warped mind to ever think this was how to handle bad grades.

However I have to take issue with UsesProzac...

My family was a foster family for many years and took in many, many kids, some for short term (days/weeks), others for years at a time. (young kids of less than school and early school age) We gave them a stable environment and care and support when their parents were holey incapable of doing so.

Drug addicts, abusive partners, abusive mothers etc. etc. We got kids who were horrendously shell shocked from what they had come from. After some time with my family (my parents really, I was young myself) they came out of their shells and started being happy and 'normal' in that they could enjoy playing again.

While I do agree that there are absolutely cases of foster families doing bad things, I think you'll find the majority are wonderful people who have nothing but the kid's best interest at heart.
>> ^UsesProzac:
Foster care is horrible. I know too many people with horror stories of rape and abuse to ever agree with a child being in a foster home

Fusion is energy's future

True dat, we do share the same frightening demographics...You guys have another dynamic going for you as well, the concentration of crusty,due-by-date, east-coast oldsters-and the shell-shock of impending doom being on the front lines of storms what with yer ass-end hanging out there waiting for the next pummeling...each year of multiple hits sends more exhausted Floridians our way!

You know me, I love to bust balls and stir up the rabble....I am not so Texas proud anymore-Quite frankly, I'd rather have Cubans here than half of Mexico with the other half hot on their heals-However-I would love to get the Mexicans on the same page with people who are tired of the corporate restructuring of the planet-They are only here doing what they know out of desperation and by insidious design.:(

Scarface - On My Block

MrFisk says...

Everyday it's been the same old thang on my block
Ya either workin or ya slangin cocaine on my block
Ya had to hustle, cuz that's how we was raised on my block
And ya stayed on ya hop until ya made you a knot
On my block, to hangout was the thang back then
And even when ya left out, ya came back in
To my block, from Holloway, Belford, to Scotts
We rolled the fox, we load the spots
Smoke weed and rocks, drink all the blue dots
On yo' block you probably had a fat pad of Tupac
Or Big Pun, or B.I., ya homeboys from knee-high
And even when it was stormin outside, that nigga'd be by
That's me dawg, on my block, I ain't have to play the big shot
Niggaz knew me back when I was stealin bell from Shamrock
And my nickname was Creepy, if Black June could see me
He'd be, trippin - and I'd bet he still try to tease me

On my block - it ain't no different than the next block
Ya get drunk and pass out, and they back ya to the house
And when you wake up on the couch you goin right back at it
On my block when ya that fucked up they laugh at it
On my block, it's just another day in the heart
of the Southside of Houston Texas, makin ya mark
On my block, we're cueing all the time, playin dominoes
Keep the swishers sweet down until my mama goes
back inside -- then we can fire
Pass it around a few times to get high

On my block, everybody business ain't ya business
What's goin on in this house is stayin here, comprende?
On my block, ya had to have that understanding
Cuz if ya told Ms. Mattie, she went and told Gladys
And once ya mama got it, it was all on the wire
And when the word got back, the set yo' ass on fire
On my block, we got some 'Nam vets shell-shocked
Who never quite got right, now they inhale rocks
On my block - it's like the world don't exist
We stay confined to this small little section with dividends
Oh my block, I wouldn't trade it for the world
cuz I love these ghetto boys and girls
born and raised, on my block...

In War, There Are No Unwounded Soldiers

vairetube says...

This is what the Republican Party is trying to portray their position as, as wounded heroes, and this is why people get pissed off.

Your patriotic "suffering" is nothing like what it could (or even should) be.

Amazing footage. Those are real heroes, and they're from a world of nations, not just one.

Google how to stand at attention, and give these men proper respect while watching the video.

Shell shock is from being so god damn close to explosions, your brain starts to unravel at a physical level... and is still a danger faced by soldiers today.

U.S. History, Chapter 17: The Presidency of George W. Bush (History Talk Post)

12675 says...

Pre-9/11- did not do his homework, and take urgent pleas seriously. he could have done a bit more it may hve helped
On 9/11- did not act like a leader. Was confused, shell shocked in a classroom, instead of immediately addressing etc. Popped up at different locations with poorly written speeches.
Post 9/11- did not listen to advice of both consvervative and liberal legal advice as to how to handle dealing with Al Qaeda in an effective manner.
Was totally over run by the V.P. and Neo-conseravative ideologues that saw 9/11 as their ideal laboratory to test their ideas of Democracy through force- eventually invade Iraq in order to spread democracy

Post9/11- Squandered the compassion of a very sympathetic world, spat in their face and said we will do things OUR way. Probably his biggest mistake of all- a war on terror would require the collective ideas of all of our close allies. Therefore "go it alone" was just plain stupid and impulsive.

He ended up with the following allies: Britain (but not the people), Vanuatu, Georgia, Romania, Poland.... hmmm
Completely bungled capturing the highest value Al Qaeda cadres, took recources away, and shifted focus on Iraq
Went to Iraq, despite overwelming intelligence pointing out that this would be a very very risky move.
Went anyway, and had no preparations for post-war, or marshall law, or counterinsurgency. Surge FINALLY was adopted, but after country was ruined by civil war. He was advised over and over to go with 3-400,000 troops.
Again, he could not assert himself and Rumsfeld walked all over him.

Fieth, Woo, Cheney and other sinister characters appealed to Bush's cruel (134 deathpen cases in Texas) side in order to extract information. Instead of listening to those with years of interrogation experience he prefered to "take the gloves off" too prove a point instead of winning a war of ideologies. Because of Torture, Extraordinary Rendition, and the imprisonment of 1000s of innocent villagers subjected to the worst aspects of American culture- heavy metal, sleazy sex, humiliation- America lost its moral compass in the eyes of other countries. This is the America that organized and held together the Nuremburg Trials. Nazis, accused of far worse crimes than blowing up planes - such as the death of 30,million plus civilians, cutting out peices of brains of twins to see what would happen, forcing sex changes to see what would happen, gassing Jews as a Final Solution etc. One of the greatest defeats, and battles won during WWII was the right of the accused war criminals to face their accusers. Somehow we find that a motley group of somewhat half assed Arab terrorists merit far greater measures???WTF?

So, with no clout, no economic or energy visions, no moral authority, no authority whatsoever -here is what the next president will have to fix:

Dealing with a now Powerful Russia. Powerful Iran. American ridiculed by such people as (and this is embarrassing) President Chavez.... Basically, no one had any respect for him. Putin took him for a ride ("I saw his soul") KGB agents dont have souls...

People may not have liked Truman, or Lincoln, or Nixon for that matter, but they all had at least some degree of respect- even Nixon. Despite Watergate, many admire Nixon despite his being a bit crazy. Bush has none. No Respect, not a good prospect for historical significance.

Theo Jansen explains how his "beach beasts" work

bigbikeman says...

I'm somewhat relieved to hear that Jansen uses computers extensively to help design his creations. Originally I (naively) assumed that he did it all in his head and it left me shell-shocked.
