Bernie Sanders slaps down Rand Paul: Health care as slavery

kceaton1 says...

The problem here is that he sees this issue in one light yet completely denies how wrong he is. Police? Fire Department? Sewage Treatment? Garbage? Teachers? The Military? State Workers across the board? NASA? etc..., etc..., etc...

No Joy

daxgaz says...

I grew up in Wichita and Joy Land was THE amusement park for a large area (the next closest park was 3hrs away). I have not been there in well over 20 years, but I still remember the layout of the park and know where each of these shots was taken. It's definitely sad to see somewhere that was such a happy place for many children decay like this.

However, to be fair, Joy Land really was a pretty low class operation for a very long time (as long as i can remember). What you can't see in this video is that there is a sewage treatment plant a few miles away (open pit type) and in the summer it would often waft through the park. Also, it got the nick name of "Gang Land" around town because it was near several bad neighborhoods. The gang kids (yes, there are gangs in Wichita Kansas), would have fights at the park. There were frequent fist fights, and occasionally stabbings and shootings. Additionally, The park was pretty small and the rides were poorly maintained. The scariest part of that roller coaster was seeing the occasional bolt come flying off as the coaster would go by and a regular rain of chipped paint coming down. I think at the time it was one of the oldest wooden coasters in operation and there is a reason they were phased out.

So, this video definitely causes mixed emotions in me. On the one hand, it's very sad to see a part of my childhood rot like this, but on the other hand, it's probably for the best that the place is gone.

Japan: Ground Swaying and Liquifying

People, take the fucking masks off. SARS is the LAST thing you should be worrying about.
How about your house falling into a sinkhole; or getting sick when a sewage line breaks and ruptures up through the street; or a broken water main flooding the city; or a building falling on you.. Oh and let's not forget radiation everywhere, and how you can't eat any of your own food anymore....
Look, no offense and all, but sucks to be you, bro.
edit - Isn't it spelled "liquefy?" >_>

Many people wear the masks whenever they're going to be out in public. It's not SARS so much as any number of things that might be floating around in a city where so many people live so close to one another. And disease outbreaks follow natural disasters.

Tim Minchin's Storm - The Movie

and there are a host of reasons why we live longer... education, access to food, sewage, cleanliness, peace (the liklihood of dying a violent death), better living and working conditions, electricity,... clean water...etc...along with access to things like antibiotics.

Aerial footage of TODAY's Christchurch earthquake

teebeenz says...

Im there right now. Its way worse than the sept quake. Buildings have been flattened, many people still trapped. Water, and sewage is out to most the city with only half with power. Building down the end of the block has sunken into the ground. Roads are either buckled up, or have been turned into massive holes as the sand and water have burst through. Our backyard is like a grey beach.

Chomsky on Egypt

MaxWilder says...

>> ^quantumushroom:

The Top 200 Chomsky Lies.
Oh, that's right, it's FOX that has an agenda.

Let's look at the very first "lie" in that list:

The "Lie": “in comparison to the conditions imposed by US tyranny and violence, East Europe
under Russian rule was practically a paradise.”

The "Truth": The communists murdered 4 million people in the Ukraine; 753,000 in Poland;
360,000 in Romania; 300,000 in Belarus; 200,000 in Hungary; 100,000 in East Germany;
100,000 in Lithuania; 70,000-100,000 in Yugoslavia; 30,000-40,000 in Bulgaria; 20,000 in
Czechoslovakia; and 5,000 in Albania. Other atrocities included the murder of over 500,000
POWs in Soviet captivity and the mass rape of at least 2 million women by the Red Army.

I don't have to know anything about the context of the quote to see that the response is nonsense. Nowhere in that quote does Chomsky say that the Russians did not commit any atrocities. He also did not claim that the US committed more genocidal acts than the Russians. He said "conditions", which most people would understand meant things like running water, sewage removal, food and shelter availability, employment availability, and such. So the whole list of atrocities is missing the point of his statement entirely.

Now maybe the conditions were arguably better under US control. I certainly don't know. But the fact that the very first "lie" is so poorly refuted, and the fact that there is absolutely no context around Chomsky's quote given, makes this list entirely pointless.

And I would also ask what you think Chomsky's "agenda" is.

Chivalry in Russia

geronimo1 says...

A road can overflood even though there is a drainage system in place. If it rains like hell over a big area the sewage pipes can reach their limit on how much water it can take away pr minute. Not saying that's the case here, but saying Russia dont have a drainage system because you see some russian people near a flooded road is not thougt through.

On the other hand, when is the red car comming back for me? that looks awsome! also the last girl looks cute.

Anthony Bourdain- Korea - Martial arts and Kimchi making

Gabe_b says...

Man, I bet I've eaten more Kimchi than almost anyone on this site, and I gotta say- The stuff is utter drek. The only reason in took such a hold in Korea is they needed a Vit. C source for the harsh as hell winters. Fresh kimchi has no redeeming qualities. I still eat it cause I'm a f-ing sap, but the stuff tastes like sewage. In a soup or fried though, that taste grand
