Seth Meyers Opens 2018 Golden Globes

ChaosEngine says...

I actually didn't think this was Seth's best work. I'm a big fan of his "Closer Look" segment, but I don't find him that funny with his one-liners.

Also, genuine question: why did Oprah win the Cecil B. de Mille Award? I mean, she's undoubtedly a successful person, but her filmography is pretty mediocre.

The last few winners were:
Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Jodie Foster, Woody Allen, George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.

There's no way you could argue that Oprah belongs in that company. (not really sure why Clooney is there either, TBH, also get lost Woody Allen, you creepy old fuck).

But still, upvote for the sentiment if not the execution.

Hilariously, he brings up Eric to say he's like Kylo Ren, a pasty faced, whining, backstabbing Sith on the dark side. This is a comparison I can get behind....now if he would just go ahead and murder his father.

The difference between Gene Roddenberry and Seth is the america they portray in the show. Gene portrays a noble and moral america that could be. Seth portrays america as it is.

TL;DW! I jest, I jest! I remember I used to read metric (yes, METRIC) tons of books during my formative years. Novels, fiction, non-fiction, comics... I read Times & Maclean's (Canadian equivalent of Times) magazines front-to-back... like over 90% of all articles every week. But high-speed internet & smartphone happened then I don't read prints very much anymore. Still read/watch news too much though, but it's now more depressing than educational with the stuff I read online. The journalistic standard is way down.
Much harder to find really enlightening long-form reporting these days.

Isaac Gives Claire Parenting Advice | Orville S1E8

Drachen_Jager says...

So... as far as I can see it, every clip from, The Orville, is essentially <insert comedy cliche here> but in SPACE!

WTF is the point in this show? I mean, I think some of what Seth McFarlane does is funny, but this is so hackneyed it's not even remotely interesting, never mind funny.

The First 6 Missions | Season 1 | THE ORVILLE

CrushBug says...

Agree with the comments. The first 2 were just standard Seth, focusing on himself and giving himself the most dialog. He ends up belabouring his scenes. I loved Million Ways To Die In The West, but it was just a little painful throughout.

That said, episode 3 came along and damn things got good. They still have their zany in there, but they are certainly laying out a good show.

Orville: Ed & Kelly Argue About Their Past Marriage To Krill

newtboy says...

Was it any better? Episode 1 sucked hard, and commercials made episode 2 look worse.
I felt it suffered from the McFarlane curse, by which I mean when he's in a live action movie, he's just not that funny and always has to insert some touchy feely or serious storyline that destroys the comedy.
Seth....be funny, or be serious. You can't be both, and trying makes you neither.
