Patrick Stewart speaks about Domestic Violence

robbersdog49 says...

>> ^Don_Juan:

The car stops in front of robbersdog49's house. A woman gets out and a man gets out, runs around the car and begins to beat the shit out of her. As he hits and kicks her, robbersdog49 peaks cautiously out his window watching, as he calls the police so that in 10/15/20 minutes later the police will arrive and save the woman. Brave of you robbersdog49. The courts will certainly make everything right.

Hmmm. No.

You're missing the point somewhat. I would certainly go and help. I'd try to stop the violence. However, this is very, very rarely the way domestic violence rears it's head. It's more often something that happens behind closed doors. Others may know it's going on, not because they watch it, but because of marks, bruises etc. Someone is only clumsy enough to fall down the stairs once or maybe twice in their life. If it's happening more often there probably something wrong.

What Laura says should happen, and the bit I have an issue with, is that all the blokes around should get together, find the abuser and beat him up. Not wait till he hits her again, because they all know what's going on. Just go and give him a taste of his own medicine.

However, what happens if they're in the middle of a difficult divorce? What happens if she self harms and blames it on him (I have a good friend who has been a victim of this)? Are we to assume that this group of men looking for a fight are going to understand this and do the right thing, or are they more likely to just beat the innocent guy up anyway, just to be on the safe side?

Everyone here seems to have a very easy view of domestic violence. You all seem to see it as very black and white. It's not. Violence is a blunt instrument that's simply not suited to dealing with a complicated issue like this. I've given just one example of where an innocent person could be badly hurt by a violence against violence system. It just an example and I'm not in any way saying this is what has happened with anyone here. There are countless other examples too. What if the woman is the person being violent and the husband is responding in self defence? I'm sure a lot of people will say this doesn't happen. I wish I could live in your world because I've known this happen. The same woman who figured out she could bruise herself and blame it on him. He tried so hard to make the relationship work for their kids. How would your violence system deal with that?

I will always try to stop a fight, to stop the violence happening before my eyes. Nowhere have I said I wouldn't. That's not the same as getting revenge, that's the bit I have a problem with. So, let's stick to the facts here Don.

Fareed Zakaria--Global Warming Insurance

griefer_queafer says...

Ok monsieur regresso-Marx, I have some pretty fundamental problems with your thinking here.

First of all, I agree with Zizek when he says that we need to apply Marx to our current world, but you seem to be adopting a position that is untenable, MAINLY because of the ways in which you don't seem to be accounting for the ways in which capitalist ideology has radically changed. As a result, your well-found materialist charges against Zakaria's argument become insanely vulnerable (teetering on self-harming). For now, I would like to probe you a bit more on some of the points you bring up.

The reason why this is bullshit, utter, utter bullshit is because Capitalism DIRECTLY influences our carbon emissions, and thus, the human agency in Climate Change.

So I am unclear as to why this qualifies as an indictment. Are you sure it is capitalism, in and of itself, that is to blame here? You might think about industrialization as it occurs in the socialist context. It seems like what you are saying is merely this: capitalism is blind to its own violent core, and by trying to use its own means to clean up its own mess, its only acting in its own interest.

Point is, isn't this just merely self-regulation?

What is the alternative for me (someone who is for the time-being beholden to the rules of capital) in going against the destruction of the earth? Fact is, CORPORATIONS, in view of something like 'growth' and self-preservation, have really changed the game here, and have really done a lot to work towards reversing this process.

Capitalism favors CONSTANT growth. No growth means no money gained. In fact, the very rise of the Bourgeoisie class came about from the opening of new markets from the Age of Exploration. New markets mean new demand, this increases production to meet this demand, this requires more factories, more resources used, further stress on the planet, more emissions.

Please respond to this question: what if 'growth' as it occurs today, also occurs concomitantly with POSITIVE effects to the planet?

Also, please make 'growth' relevant to our neo-capitalist moment.

Spending money with a form of insurance is ultimately a short term goal. Yes, countries kept in poverty by imperialist powers need some $$$ to push them past unsustainable practices, but they could get there themselves if Imperialist powers didn't have interest there already. Think about where we get our resources, where most goods are produced and manufactured. Think where they go, to us. Capitalism wants us to buy more. I feel like the connections are very easy to see.

Why is it a short term goal if the idea is to fundamentally change the ways in which 'growth' affects the planet?

Environmental destruction will continue unless the actual system is changed.

Hmmm... i would usually agree with such a statement, had it not been preceded with such misguided nonsense. Tighten up your thinking, comrade.

Wallace Calls Obama's Whitehouse a Bunch of Crybabies

Glenn Beck: Obama is Racist, Hates White People

lampishthing says...

Winstonfield... Obama is the president of the United States. That office doesn't really come with a lot of humility. What do you think would happen if he came out and said he was wrong? It would be a rallying cry to all his opponents no matter how it was phrased. It's patently unrealistic to expect any head of state to apologize to the public over a (relatively though not necessarily) small matter. By saying he was sorry for the way people interpreted his comments he at least admitted he fecked up by commenting the way he did and I think that's the best you can hope for.

Is he racist? I've seen a lot more videos of innocent black guys getting the shit kicked out of them by ignorant cops and complaining about it afterwards than I have of guilty black guys getting the shit kicked out of them by cops and complaining about it afterwards. In my experience if the guy complains and it becomes a big story it's more likely the dude was innocent. I'm not racist against white people. Though maybe that's what the self harm was about... Oh wait, no, I see what I did there! I hurt myself so I'm racist? No! I hurt myself cos I'm myself! Just like maybe Obama came down on the cop because he wants to reach out to the lower classes of society who think they're trodden on by the police?

He came down on the cop. THAT DOESN'T MEAN HE'S RACIST!!!!! It could mean a goddamn plethora of different things!!!! Ockham's razor is not always the answer and it is always worthwhile remembering your own biases before you insult anyone in a public forum.

P.S. Could people please stop upvoting this kind of bollocks? Seriously, 50 people think that this is worth watching? Why? I'm pretty sure everyone knows this kind of one-sided rhetoric exists already, people choose not to watch it on tv. Is it more intersting to watching on the net somehow? It still ain't funny anyway.

Though... there's always the banter .

I really don't know much. One day I read he got a 40 year sentence, months later the sentence gets changed, and then later on, it changed again until I lost track. Last I heard, the sentence was 52 years. I do know that he is in a maximum security prison and has tried to take his life several times, cut off his arms, smash his head against the walls, etc.

He is completely isolated from the rest of the prisoners, and is also receiving a lot of psychological treatment. He also converted to some sort of Christian cult and every week he is allowed to receive a visit from the members of the cult. I don't know the extent of self harm he has done, but for some reason (I guess to try to calm him down) he is now able to talk on the phone 4 to 6 hours a day and he is allowed to paint and write things from some club he is in.

holy shit! I havent ever heard about this guy. Did he get set free?

"Not much else to explain here..."

I beg to differ, before the subtitles start the reporters say that this man, has been given only 40+ years in jail but that he MAY get out in 3 years. Why? well because Colombia's justice system is fucked beyond belief. I know because I am Colombian. But then again, this case is quite old so perhaps they have re examined the case and given a proper sentence.

His name is Luis Alfredo Garavito, and he not only killed 140 children but he also raped and mutilated them. Most were homeless kids or kids that were street vendors. He would trick them by giving them money, or dressed as a monk, or even pretended to be a street vendor like them. Anything to gain their trust.

He is an alcoholic who was raped as child, and consequently entered a state of depression. I suppose this is when Hitler's life and words as well as Satanic ideas influenced him. So labeling this with the 'religion' tag is kind of misleading, since this person experienced other things of psychological nature BEFORE his obsession with Hitler and Satanism. The title of this makes it seem as if this guy picked a Hitler book and a satanic bible one afternoon and *poof* just like magic he became a murderer.

The authorities found a massive grave of about 40 corpses in a Colombian town, that is when a full investigation across the nation to find the murderer began and a couple more graves were found thereafter.

btw, he confessed to 140 murders but as far as I know he has been linked to about 190

The Bridge

NordlichReiter says...

"Like those trees, we are all dying. The future is an illusion, our plans are an illusion, our fears an illusion. We live life in every breath. Now. Every cup of tea. Every word we write... Every blossom we hold. Every life we take. A beat. Life in every breath. That is bushido." - Katsomoto The Last Samurai

You can try to stop this, but it is the Human Condition, like the desire to see others suffer, the desire for sex, or the any other desire that you can compare.

But, as certian things are scientifically discovered (this is not a scientific article http://www.oxytocin.org/oxytoc/love-science.html) they may find that all things that happen in a brain is a chemical reaction. Love is a chemical induced euphoria, glee also. If depression is a chemical imbalance, then the will that most humans have to keep them from self harm can be altered by chemical reaction.

The happening is a movie rendition of the belief that a chemically induced stupor can make the brain kill itself.

Marilyn Manson in Bowling for Columbine

alien_concept says...

Yawn. When are people going to realise that music, films, whatever does NOT cause people to do anything?! If that was the case, every single person who was into Marilyn Manson or the like would be running around, blowing shit up, joining cults and self harming til they drip to death with an ironic smile on their face. Get over it

How NOT to treat your secretary

alien_concept says...

This is a brilliant movie Not enough is understood about self harm by the general public, yet it's so widespread now (or at least it has a label that people understand). Always good to bring these issues to light

Mentos, The Freshmaker (and no Diet Coke)

bamdrew says...

i laughed. could have been funny if roles were reversed and she broke out mace, or if it was self-harm via a fake knife to the wrists... he goes back up to her, pulls out a knife, starts sobbing and cutting his wrists while everybody else starts freaking out.
