LM Steiner: Why domestic violence victims don't leave

Church of LDS, Racism, and Prop 8

>> ^NordlichReiter:
We do not have a republic, because a republic protects the minority from the Popular Majority.
So to all you out there for Democracy! There it is in action.
The true evil of Popular Democracy is when a rampant majority runs free.

You have a republic. A republic doesn't protect the minority, a republic requires the minority to fight and gain access on their own through deeds and actions. A democracy(or some variation), however does protect the minority, in order to allow them to continue with their heritage/etc within the social/economic fabric of that nation.

Canada/Most of Europe = Parliamentary democracy or some form of democracy
US = Dissolving republic to democracy.

Popular democracies(democracy of the people) give the people the freedom to do 'whatever' within the bounds of the countries law, short of a few basic things. Don't kill, don't rob, don't rape, don't pillage. In otherwords don't be a jackass and we won't have to kill you, or lock you up for the safety of everyone else.

Republics are the freest form of government you can have, providing that people can maintain it. It's the closest to anarchy, but still maintains laws for the benefit of the people and leaves general protection to city-states/states. Democracies you should be familiar with, and are one step above SDL(social democracies) like northern scandinavian countries(high taxes, moderate freedom), under them are the communist rules and dictatorships in that order.

Michael Moore Responds to Canadian Press About Wait Times

>> ^curiousity> Umm... Isn't that what he said? I'm pretty sure he said the problem with Canada's health care is that it is underfunded.
And you are making the same point and then saying that he is ignorant? We did watch the same video, right?

To a point yes and to a point no. We already run at a 50% tax rate, and that's with 33m people across the country. Figure at the size of the country, that we're already overburdened paying for everything. You probably missed the point because I was touching on things in a conceptual level which is okay. The level is at the max that can be reasonably sustained, while providing all other core services.

Yes he is ignorant, because he believes that funding should be higher. He misses the half-trillion dollar debt we have(0.30/$1 spent in just interest), other social services, and so on and so forth. Canada is 'socialized' we pay out the ass for it in taxes. The other provinces pay out the ass for it to equalize everyone across the board. Canada is not a member of the SDL like Sweden, or Norway. We don't have a +75% tax rate.

Now all you gotta do is figure out the rest, and figure out how you can tell people that an extra 5-15% tax rate is going to be good for them. Especially in a place like Ontario where you have a true unemployment rate of around 18% and 1:4 people are employed by the government.

Vista v.s Ubuntu + Beryl

Also of note, this may all be eye candy, but so are Aero and OSXs interface. This is merely an addition to Linux so people don't complain that Linux has no eye candy. As nifty as I think it is, I probably won't use it myself. But where Linux beats out all the other competition is the sheer configurability of just about everything.

The only thing missing is major gaming support. However, I expect this to change in the near future. DirectSound is slowly being replaced by OpenAL, Direct3D can expect some major competition from OpenGL by the end of this summer (when it's updated to have all the Direct3D 10 features), and SDL does everything that the rest of DirectX does equally well.

In the end, I don't care if the world converts to Linux. Let them stick with Windows and OSX. All I want is to be able to do all the things I want to do on Linux and not have to rely on the other two myself.

Forgive my redundancy, but as I posted in a similar Vista sift:
How about the fact that DirectX 10 is trash. Sure Direct3D has some cool new features, and games like Crysis look amazing, but what about the other DX10 components? DX10 no longer supports hardware-accelerated sound in order to "protect the kernel." (See: How to implement DRM.) In fact, getting any of the cool 3D audio/sound filters requires you to install a patch that uses OpenAL (the audio equivalent of OpenGL) instead of the sound component of DirectX. Without that, you're stuck with some flat, stereo sound.
Add to that the fact that DirectInput (input from keyboards/mice/joysticks) has been borked so that it's "more compatible with the XBox360 controller" (See: Let's try to unify our gaming cash cow) and DirectX 10 isn't so sweet anymore.
The alternative is to use OpenGL for graphics, OpenAL for sound, and SDL/GLUT for everything else. All of these are cross platform, and most of them work BETTER than DirectX (excepting OpenGL, although it's not really that far behind graphics-wise) and you kinda wonder why game developers still stick with DirectX . . .

New Vista games (how to install them on Vista Business)
