Amazing helicopter rescue of hiker stuck on cliff

maatc says...

Almost always the reason is an overestimation of their skills. They realize mid way up that they lack the strength to make it to the top on their own, and since back down is even more dangerous they get stuck. Especially without ropes.

My wife and I found a father and son midway up Echo Point in Katoomba, NSW once. They attempted to climb the cliff for a daytrip, and were only 2/3 of the way up when nighttime fell, so they camped on a ledge and started screaming when the sun came up.
We were on a hike for sunrise and thats when we heard them. Called in rescue and they showed up with helicopter and a team that repelled down to them. Got them up safely after a few hours.

Rescue team was actually happy about this one. Said 9 out of 10 they are called in to scrape up the remains of suicide jumpers at that location.

I always wonder in this and other similar rescue operations how people manage to get themselves into such predicaments. Sure, bad things happen that can't be prevented, I understand that, and have the utmost respect and gratitude for rescue operators....buuuut.... I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the times someone has done something stupid. I wonder if that frustration gets to them...

and dude... fuck your bag.

Most Shocking Second a Day Video

JAPR says...

By assuming we are "close minded conspiracy theorists" simply off the basis of having a different conclusion than you, you're simply avoiding the discussion, and you still fail to make any legitimate arguments; you merely repeat the "tired and naive" talking point of how "it's not the best, but it's the best we have" to defend an unjust system.

When has that attitude ever done us good? We have such amazing technology and understanding of the universe because of the way we as a whole ultimately reject that argument and instead say "some of this works quite well, but we need a lot of work in other areas."

Personally, I'm a fan of the free market concept. I think a fair amount of those who you are so eager to write off as fools also do. The problem comes down to what our concepts of justice are. We speak fondly of "equality of opportunity," but anyone can see we have no such thing. Only when everyone has equal opportunity to pursue learning in the fields of their choice without having to give up on adding to our collective culture/knowledge because of the economic pressure of survival can we truly say people are free. So long as anyone is taking a job they hate just to scrape by at the bottom of the chain, and we exercise violence against each other to try and force our ways onto others on a massive scale, we are, in my opinion, a profoundly unjust society.

Of course, violence will never end, scheming and exploitation and all our evils will continue to plague us. We can't make a utopia. What we can do, though, is decrease the potential for abuse in our current systems. I, and many others, think that separating the means of survival and self-actualization - the things required to develop, grow, and contribute to humanity at a high level (namely, food/water/shelter, basic healthcare, and free, equal access to education) - from the rest of the market is one way to make a huge impact on that potential for abuse. Think about it: how many times do we let corporations damage our environment and abuse us simply because speaking out means losing your means of survival?

I think the rest of the market is going to have to stay the market, nobody can really say how it's fair to divide up all our resources (though I hope for an increase in democracy going forwards for things related to our environment and health). Amusingly, though you rail against anarchy, the actual ideals of anarchy fall in line with the concept of a free market (anarchy is really all about freedom of association rather than coercive structures; not a lack of order).

Don't need to "Edumacate" myself thanks. As for arguing a point? Well, with certain closed minded conspiracy theorists it is pointless. Especially with someone who sees ALL the problems wrapped neatly up in a capitalist plot. Their answer? they have none other than "overthrow those in control." Well, you don't need to look far to see what anarchy brings. Or should I spell it out for you? It brings exactly that; Anarchy, in fighting, tribalism, persecution and pain. You stick to your childish revolutionary talk and I will, with all its flaws, stick to the best there is at the minute ie, capitalism and democracy (such as it is).

Scandinavian Preschool: No bad weather, just bad clothes

CreamK says...

There is something very simple but effective in work here. Letting kids be kids, let them get dirty and adults just hanging out with them teaches more valuable lessons of life than any hovering tiger-mom style. Asian countries have surpassed Scandinavian in math skills but at horrible cost. It's just stupid to put kids in to super-learning mode if they grow up unhappy, with social skill problems, unable to fit or feel accomplished.. I like our way of doing things, thank you very much. Eat dirt, climb where you shouldn't and fall down, scrape knees, explore without fear, get hurt, discover, all of that is important part of growing up.

That's a slight twist on a really old one, when someone else delivers a comeback, you say, "If I'd wanted that comeback, I'd have scraped the roof of your mouth."

Inside the World's Most Dangerous Amusement Park

SDGundamX says...

OMG nostalgia! I lived not even 20 minutes from there when I was a kid. I almost got killed in the parking lot there on the 4th of July once when a firework exploded right after launch and sent fiery fragments out into the crowd (one of them smashed the windshield of the car next to me). I also remember totally wanting to go on the Cannonball loop but my parents wouldn't let me (in hindsight probably a good decision on their part).

Motorworld there was awesome--it was across the street from Action Park and I think run by the same people. They had these cage-enclosed go-karts tanks equipped with compressed-air tennis ball cannons and sensors that stopped the tanks temporarily if they got hit by a tennis ball. You could pay to drive the tanks around inside an enclosed arena or you could also shoot at the tanks from the outside of the arena using air-cannon turrets that required quarters to operate. Tons of fun.

Mostly, though, I went to the water park, which according to Wikipedia had the most casualties. I got a fair amount of scrapes from the waterslides and I can totally see how people could get seriously injured on some of them.

True Facts About the Aye Aye

braschlosan says...

If you give an Aye Aye an orange it will poke a small hole and scoop out all the good parts leaving the membrane between each slice intact. Cut it open and you have a perfectly segmented cup.

Give an Aye Aye a cut portion of carrot and it will create a hollow tube of carrot skin.

Give an Aye Aye a half coconut and it will turn it over (round side up), chew a small hole in it and scrape the meat out, even though it would be much easier to get it from the open side.

Weird obsessive little things.
