Hm. A moderately (If I can judge that) historically acurate George Washington vs. the Mel Gibson fantasy of WIlliam Wallace. ERB has certainly done better in the past.

But mostly they are English and Scottish children.

Really? I understand racial insensitivity, but is this a fair expectation of diversity in a fictional place that takes place in Scotland? Sure, the name is completely off, but it feels like the rest of this anger is misplaced on an author who is not trying to tell a story on themes of racial diversity.
To top it off, crowds react strongly and positively to enthusiastic and impassioned anger, further building the bravado of this poetic "slam" piece.
If Rowling is trying to tell and cast a story reflective of the local demographics, it doesn't appear inaccurate.
Scotland isn't the same type of "melting pot" America has come to be. Again, perhaps the expectation has been created that all cultures must have the demographic diversity that America has established. Remember, the character she is referring to is actually Scottish.

We've got some guys here in Japan that do this. They usually come every year to the Scottish Highland Games festival in Chiba and they'll even let you put on the gear and try it out yourself (though for the noobs they use padded wooded weapons rather than metal for obvious reasons). I'll admit though the guys in this video are way better and a bit more... overzealous than the guys we usually see here.

I really don't get all the GMO hubbub. I realize it sounds bad - like we are Frankenstein-ing our food, but I'm a biologist and physician and people need to realize that we have been GMO-ing our food since the advent of agriculture/husbandry. The whole POINT of agriculture/farming is to breed crops/animals such that they express certain genetic traits that are valuable to humans. Examples are abundant: bananas, corn, cows, chickens, Scottish fold kittens... Basically anything that humans can grow/raise, we attempt to genetically modify through selective breeding; the fact that we now have the technology to accomplish these changes in a lab is obvious as the next logical step. If you object to GMO then you should be a hunter-gatherer. This is not to say that there are no risks to selective breeding/GM. For one, genetically similar or identical organisms are susceptible to the same pathogens. If we stake our fortunes on a single type of wheat, corn, cow, banana, whatever - we risk losing it forever if there is some sort of infectious outbreak. As far as health risks to consumers, I don't think there is any legitimate science that suggests that GM food is any worse for you than non-GM food (the same goes for irradiated foods).
