The HongKongiest piece of filmmaking you'll see this week

9547bis says...

@Sarzy, @lucky760:

To's output can be roughly divided into three categories:
- Straight Film Noir influenced by Jean-Pierre Melville, including his early Milkyway Image productions, his The Mission / Exiled / Vengeance sort-of-trilogy, etc, with a special mention for Election 1 & 2.
- Somewhat more 'commercial' ventures: Running Out Of Time, Full Time Killer, Drug wars, and Breaking News... Less edgy, but better production value.
- And his more 'out there' attempts, that are usually crime films with some surreal aspect: Running On Karma (Shaolin-monk-turned-stripper sees people's past incarnations, tries to reverse their karma), Throwdown (everyone is a secret Judo master), Mad Detective (schizo detective can see people's inner personality and dialogue with them)...

He sometimes misses the mark, but his films are usually worth their salt (this often extends to other Milkyway films he produces).

Breaking News, it turns out, is a minor To film. It's well directed (as you can see by yourselves), and it's definitely fun to watch, but ... it's just that his other films are better! My advice : start with PTU, Exiled, or Full Time Killer. Then if you like what you see, go for the rest.

And if you like Running On Karma, check out Wai Ka Fai, To's writer / Milkyway co-founder and sometimes-director. That guy is good.

THE UNBELIEVERS - Richard Dawkins & Lawrence Krauss

I want to talk about something that to my regard is pure lunacy. But, to me, though I appreciate the doubters, the ones who question everything; would change their attitudes completely. None of the atheists should go on ranting until they take the ultimate bungie jump a human can have: DMT. One thing I would note is that I do not know if it was put there by aliens, evil spirits, sacred spirits, the Earth itself, God. No, I do not know and no one knows. I do not know if there is a price to be paid by having witnessed the underpinnings of technology, soul, afterlife, the universe, consciousness, the brain or whatever the hell it is. I have no idea, I just know that this experience is as real as fuck. Mind blowing. Scary. Terrible and healing all at the same time.

I was agnostic going into this, did not believe in soul, appreciate string theory, quantum mechanics but do not believe in it at some factual level, did not believe in any sort of God, or the afterlife. In mere seconds all my notions of what I thought or did not think or could never had merely thought up, all my permeating existential beliefs were thrown off like a nuclear bomb had gone off; revealing some partial truth of what we really are, witnessing an alien computer program, based on simple equations that manifests consciousness itself. Not a new conclusion and one I thought only drug addled scifi writer or schizos would ever believe.

It were as though I had found some way to put my head into the Large Hadron Collider itself whilst every proton turned into Higgs Boson; I then found out that this is not uncommon for such an experience. I know that can sound incredibly narcissistic, incredulous, unbearable, impossible. But what I got out of it was humble and that is another story.

There are experiences out there in which a person can feel as though they had been thrown into another dimension, experienced the Big Bang and met Gods of the Ultimate Power, they may or may not be and died on levels not many ever knew possible. In mere seconds the regular doors of perception are shut and a new life is born. That is where it gets tricky.

Until any of these guys can figure out why the human mind can explode on an infinite universe level of pure digital consciousness, think it can perceive these things and witness them on all levels and in new ways and come back to a normal human life in a normal brain without having in fact died? Well, I think they ought to stop talking and do more research. We have no facts and an experience like that will make it very apparent that the walls of reality can be so easily shattered to see new alien worlds, languages, dimensions, spirits, births and rebirths beyond all human comprehension. It sounds like the ultimate atheist experience, right? Not at all, it leaves room for something of the highest power that is manifested through pretty much any religion. We have to remember... you have to go to school, you have to get a job, we get wrapped up in our world. We have to act like we know what we are talking about and I am saying there is no evidence out there to support the fact that anyone can say that there is absolutely no God. There is absolutely no afterlife. Anyone that feels that they know anything about the nature of reality and who they are or what any of it means and apply lectures to it in the event that they become so arrogant and stubborn that they say what they think is absolutely correct when it is not accounted for by science, should do this. Do it after a lot of research. I say science but it is a paradox, I believe in Science first and foremost, it is our hope for tangible evolution, repeatable fact, but I am fairly sure this is something Science will never figure out. And after reading a similar experience: http://ewwty.com/2012/02/24/dimethyltryptamine-dmt-experience it seems in this experience there are some reoccurring themes. Science has so far written this off in the easiest way it can: to call it a psychedelic or a hallucinogen. So, find out. We know absolutely nothing in a very non existential way.

"You're Welcome" - (Cleverbots Having A Conversation)

Religion (and Mormonism) is a Con--Real Time with Bill Maher

EMPIRE says...

Romney was not BORN a mormon, he was born, as all babies, ignorant of everything, even stupidity. He was then raised as a mormon, and had the stupidity injected into his brain on a daily basis.

I don't believe it's not hard for someone to reject their religious background, but fuck... this world HAS to come to a point where we start calling religion out (every religion) on the stupid inane, bullshit it spreads.

If a person wants to believe in a non-specific godly entity which created the universe, that's one thing (although still pretty stupid, since there is zero evidence of that), but it's quite another when you believe in virgin births, and people parting seas in two, and talking snakes, and overlord Xenu, and Joseph Smith's unbelievably pathetic lies, and the word of schizos who think they talk to god and want to kill everyone who doesn't believe in them, etc...

Religion is NOTHING BUT bullshit, deception and complete ignorance. I'm not saying there aren't good people in all religions in the world (well, maybe most religions), but they need to get their heads out of their asses, and leave the fairy tales to children (which to be honest, in this day and age, are probably less likely to believe in something as obviously fake as a talking snake).

Mom Lashes Out At "Scumbag" Judge - Sent Kids to Jail for $

Porksandwich says...

>> ^xxovercastxx:

Not to defend the judge or the "war on drugs" at all but, if the kid killed himself over going to JH, he had bigger issues. It's sad that he didn't get help but that part isn't the fault of the judge.

At some point it isn't, however......over punishing petty crimes even if he didn't take bribes for it is bad. Add in taking money for it, makes it worse. He had incentive to send people who were obviously not meant to be there away for crazy amounts of time given the "crimes" (which are highly debatable and subjective). It's not just the judges responsibility or for that matter a jury's responsibility to send people away for as much time as possible, but also to make sure the person is mentally capable of understanding that they committed a "crime" and that the punishment given them will correct the problem. If you got a guy who has no record, has a trivial offense for a multi-offender..but one that for a first time offender is so minor as to be laughable. The scare of being in front of the judge would often times correct the issue, but if not, they hand out probationary periods and mandatory drug tests to show them how inconvenient their life can become if they keep up with the drug path.

He chose, for money, to skip all other avenues at his disposal on a first time offender with a very very very very very very minor non-violent offense and sentence him with time in juvenile detention. I mean that alone could very well ruin your chances at anything since anyone who knows you spent time in juvenile detention is gonna wonder how fucked up you are...since historically this is a place they put the too young to be tried as adult whack jobs....or the kids who never seem to attempt to turn it around and keep stealing cars or mugging people.

And to think that if he had probated the kid, there would have been a chance to find out the kid had mental issues? Maybe he was bipolar or schizo. Many doctors find that bi-polar sufferers tend to self-medicate via drinking or drugs. The kid wasn't given a chance to be diagnosed, he was stuck straight into the worst possible place someone with a fragile mental state should be stuck...no "alternative" was offered him...it wasn't a choice anyone but the judge could have made. And he made that choice for dollars in his pocket, condemned a kid with a potentially fragile mental state to a living hell for someone that age...who came out broken. Because why bother? He was shown that a judge will not show leniency he will put you away for as long as possible, whether it's the best option or not. I mean seriously, that is a system that promotes you "die by cop" every time you break the law..otherwise you might spend life in prison putting cash in some judges pocket.

It is most definitely the fault of the judge, and it's even more so if the judge didn't have him mentally evaluated or the government didn't try to help the kid out when he got out. That is all on the judge, he exacerbated this kid's problems by an immeasurable amount.

The point isn't that this guy was a Palin fan.
The point is that people like Palin shouldn't be using such insane language and violent calls for action. Imagine a muslim imam has posted a map with crosshairs for candidates. It would be seen differently in the news cycle, that's for sure.
And, yes, Palin had nothing to do with a 22yr old schizo nutjob. But when you put out this kinda of calls for violence and hatred, then, yes, when people get shot... It's time to revisit the lady putting bullseyes and naming her enemys that we need to "RELOAD" over.

Sorry, I was under the impression "wingnut" was a derogative term used to refer to right-wing extremists, but apparently it can be applied to any flavour of political extremism. Not that I'm sure this shooter really fell on any conventional political axis.

↑^^There's only one party dude. The government of the U.S. has been an aristocracy for some time now-The illusion of the difference in parties is part of the particular brand of collective psychosis in the U.S.-
Schizophrenia translates roughly as "shattered mind" and comes from the Greek "schizo" "to split" or "to divide"-
"Insanity is a perfectly natural adjustment to a totally unnatural and negative environment."-R.D.Laing
Psychotic states are simply an attempt to adjust. If your world is irrational and insane and you are doing your best to adjust to it-It is merely a symptom, like crime-don't treat the symptom.
In the global psychosis we find ourselves in there are so many levels of compensation, that to the somewhat sane individual, the world seems frighteningly linear and deleteriously so. Waking up from the boot stomping on a human face forever is a rough trip we need to take the planet on collectively, before the boot is unable to be removed....

How People are Manipulated by Fear and Propaganda

canyonroad says...

Good intentions from someone who is mentally ill. Icke doesn't worry me - it's the followers, a bunch of deluded pseudo-geeks who think so much of themselves.

I hate their sense of self importance, looking at the horrifying WTC videos, smirking and saying 'THERE is the holographic missile, you can't fool ME! People are such sheep'.

Bunch of schizos.. they need help.

Jesus talks to me in my head. I am blessed and others think so too. But when I started to talk to myself too much, I was thrown in an institution for being schizophrenic.

Now I am a blessed schizo who talks to Jesus... and he talks to me.

Red skinned cloven-hoofed horned evil demons are real. I see them too.

Compare my beliefs with the average Christian's. Are they all that different? Nope. Not at all.

The Unfunny Truth about Scientology (A bit graphic)

I was wondering, can people stop using Clint Mansell's music for every "profound" video they think up? Just tired of hearing it everywhere.

Aside from that, pretty scary that not just people can go schizo but entire organizations can.

Every pot smoking scene from the movies

PG Version of 300

budzos says...

I used to be a major "movie-goer". For the six years from 2000 to 2005 I saw an average of 40 movies per year in the cinema. Like others here have said, it was mainly the other people in the theatre who ruined the experience.

My biggest pet-peeve became not talkers, but people who put their feet up on the seats. I kind of understand if the row in front of you is empty, maybe put your feet up if you must. But if I choose to sit in that row, you must take your feet down if they are within a couple seats of me. I remember seeing POTC and some chick felt the need to dangle her stinky bare feet right next to my head. I tried to ignore it but she was also wiggling her toes and rocking the seats. I asked her once to move her feet and she ignored me, so a couple minutes later I turned around, looked her right in the eye, and flicked her in the big toe as hard as I could with my fingernail. She went "Oh. My. God." in a very teenagery way, but took her foot down and shut the fuck up finally.

When I saw 300 there were two teenage girls seated near me who never stopped talking during the entire film. It was agressively obnoxious but they were far enough and the film was engrossing enough that I tuned them out. It's when the movie is not so great that talkers become a real annoyance, because just as you've suspended your disbelief they'll pipe up and drag you back to reality.

Finally, don't even get me started on the fucking assholes who think they enhance the movie by yelling out loud in a hushed theatre. Maybe I don't want any comic relief that the director didn't intend, and maybe not everyone finds the latest catch-phrase to be so hilarious. Basically if I could get away with it I'd follow people like this out to their car and brain them with a blunt object, for the betterment of society. I was only ever friends with two guys who would do this. One ended up being shot and killed by police and the other has literally gone schizo and can't even go to work any more. So I think it's clear that shouting in movie theatres is indicative that someone is on the low threshold of social integration, and should most likely be withdrawn from the gene pool.
