Port of Amsterdam - Timelapse SAIL 2015

Why E=mc² is wrong

newtboy says...

I was taught that E=(+-)MC2. (This implies antimatter)

I'm disappointed he wasn't totally clear that all he was doing was adding kinetic energy to the base equation. Of course that adds energy to the system, but the base equation is about mass/energy (how much total energy a certain resting mass contains) not all energy. Heat the mass, you need another equation. Make it radioactive, another.

Also, maybe it's been proven wrong by now, but I recall experiments showing photons do have at least a pseudo mass, proven by their ability to move objects (like the spinning black and white squares inside a vacuum toy and theoretical solar sails).

The America's Cup AC75 Boat Concept

noims says...

I was really into that until 1:35 when the awful animation kicked in.

It wasn't just the fake drama of the race (although that really got to me), but there were so many things wrong technically. The worst is when boat even goes through 180 without the sails moving at all; I know it's a small thing, but as someone who sails - presumably a large target audience - it just looked so wrong.

Great boat, and nice ideas though. I'd love to see it in action to see if they actually work.

Seth Meyers' Statement on Charlottesville

Respect the lee shore and high winds

bamdrew says...

This looks like one overconfident sailor who had planned to bring friends with modest sailing experience out for a day on the water and refused to let high, gusting winds hold him back.

They couldn't control the boat enough to keep the mainsail up in gusty winds, and if they had the boat would likely be leaning and flagging soo far over in choppy seas that the passengers would be right to be scared of the boom taking one of them out. It doesn't look like there is an outboard motor, so I guess they somehow got out of the slip and away from docks on just the jib, then hit the real wind gusts.

And now the video starts with mainsail down and getting in the way, jib not fully up but providing some pull, and that pull being lost to waves and poor steering. The sailor is messing with lines up front while the tiller is manned by someone who is waaay out of their element, and who begins to just jack-knife the thing from 0:20 onwards, halting all forward momentum. I don't want to come down on that person too hard, because none of them should have been out there that day, and the sailor should have been manning the till or at least yelling very specific orders at the top of his lungs well before the situation got this bad. No idea why they don't have an outboard motor, maybe they lost it. If its a rental, that rental agency should not have let them go out there.

The Pogues "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah"

ulysses1904 says...

A sad footnote, I just read that Phil Chevron died of cancer in 2013. He wrote some great songs like "Thousands are Sailing".

And "Rabinga", from the "Straight To Hell" soundtrack. That was a bizarre movie, with The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones in a spaghetti western in Almeria, Spain.

Jim Jefferies tells Piers Morgan to Fuck Off

MilkmanDan says...

I'm with @Chairman_woo . YES, Hillary was the "lesser of two evils" option.

Maher and the rest are upset because they think that "lesser of two evils" is an overly simplistic take on the actual degree to which either of them would have actually been evil. Fair enough, sorta. Piers Morgan is essentially just arguing semantics while the big picture just sails over everyone's heads.

Trump is a buffoon. A bull in a china shop. YES, he's doing blatantly evil/stupid things. Subtlety is not his forte. When he does bad things, we're going to find out about them.

Hillary is a vastly more savvy politician. Machiavellian, one might say. I think there's a very real argument to be made that her track record of (barely) weaseling out of very questionable actions and generally getting away with stuff that has sunk lots of other politicians suggests that it might be reasonable to be quite afraid of what Hillary has done / could do that we wouldn't find out about.

I'm not pleased with either one of them being the President. But honestly, I think that it will likely be easier to overcome and repair the damage done by "big dumb animal" Trump than it would have been to track down and discover all the cunning little traps, pitfalls, and closed-door deals that a President Hillary could have got done.

Genuinely struggling to call it between who would have been most disastrous.

Trump was probably worse for America, I suspect Clinton might have been worse for the rest of the world. Not that it matters what any of us think in hindsight.

The Coast Guard saves an SUV Driver

SFOGuy says...

After I read "The Perfect Storm", I sort of wondered how the Coast Guard feels about rescuing people who have rather imperfectly exercised their judgement and gotten themselves into a pretty bad situation. Of course, in that book, a chopper goes down trying to rescue a not very clever sailboat owner who has set sail into the face of the storm (they oddly survive). And I guess the answer is: the rescue crews just don't think about it that way at all. They are there to rescue people; so they just try. It might sort of drive me crazy.

What seals this guys idiocy for me is when he gets out of the truck and casually leans against the wall. If the water is pushing your 4000#+ vehicle around, why would you get out and stand between it and a concrete wall! That guy could have very easily got himself crushed.

Data & Picard | Pogo

Ashenkase says...

SHAKA, When the Walls Fell.

The Tamarians communicated through narrative imagery. Need to include the name with the time and place reference

FIRST OFFICER: Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel.

FIRST OFFICER: Mirab. With sails unfurled.

Picard extends the Tamarian dagger toward the First

Officer, offering it back to him.

PICARD: Temba. His arms open.

FIRST OFFICER: Temba at rest.

PICARD (almost to himself): Thank you…

It's supposed to be a no-wake zone

SFOGuy says...

Yah, hard to know the particulars---and the wind and current probably would have worked against this idea---but---I did have a sailing instructor who stress tested me in a narrow channel by proposing that I'd just lost the engine---now what would I do?

The correct answers? Well, it's a sailboat, dummy---you could sail. And if all else fails---drop anchor (as long as you had the swing room; and even if you didn't, the resulting collision would be less impressive.)

But---we don't really know how the captain and pilot got into this situation.

I look forward to learning more.

Someone screwed up leading up to this , , but the engine thrust causing the destruction was probably the right call , for whatever reason , the ship was on its way to simply crash into the marina, and that would likely cause _much_ more destruction. Also obviously too late to call the tug boats . (When the video starts)
