Doom - Did You Know Gaming?

9547bis says...

Missed musical rip-off/homage: 'Rise' by Pantera (E1M4).

Bonus fun fact: the main level designer for Doom 1 and Doom 2 was Sandy Petersen, the author of the classic Chaosium RPG "Call Of Chulhu" (which is a pretty big deal if you're into that sort of thing, as I was back then.)

How we give out moderating powers to Sifters (Controversy Talk Post)

I like it. VideoSift: RPG

Instead of set sift powers, you could have character leveling points and pick your own unique skills and abilities. Probably would be a pain in the ass for lucky to create, but would be fun.

I would make videosift much more of a game.

DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION Gameplay Trailer - The Inquisitor

Jinx says...

Cool looking environments. I hope I don't find them recycled 20 times...

It seems pretty clear it won't be another DA:O, but I enjoyed all the Mass Effects even though they were clearly aimed at consoles. Seems that the only RPGs that get made exclusively for PC now are the MMO kind, which is a shame.

I'm trying to keep my expectations sufficiently low so that when it comes out I am pleasantly surprised.

Can Video Games Make You Smarter? R video games good for U?

SDGundamX says...

As someone who researches the effects of video games on education (primarily on learners of English as another language) I can tell you the empirical research into the topic is not nearly so cut and dried.

There was a lot of hype about the "brain age"-type games when they first came out, some of which this video references, but what we know now is that those types of games only make you "smarter" in the sense that they make you better at solving similar puzzle-types. In other words, the gains you see are really just the effects of practice. The supposed "smartness" does not transfer over to other skill areas. See this link for more info: http://pamkato.com/2013/04/17/do-brain-training-games-work-yes-no-and-maybe/

So basically everything referenced in this video can be explained by "practice" rather than by some special characteristic of the video games themselves (certainly video games make the practice part fun, though). Furthermore, there is pronounced lack of research into whether the benefits such as those reported in this video actually mean anything significant (i.e. whether being able to more concretely differentiate different levels of gray when you are younger actually leads to better vision when you are older compared with non-gamers, whether you retain the ability to read small text as you age better than non-gamers, etc.).

I do believe there are cognitive benefits to ALL kinds of gaming (board games, pen-and-paper RPGs, card games like poker, crossword puzzles, tic-tac-toe, etc.) but based on the empirical evidence so far I'm not convinced there is anything particularly special about video games that leads players to become "smarter" in the sort of general sense that is being suggested here.

Zero Punctuation: System Shock 2

Gotta upvote SS2, one of my favorite games of all time. He mentions setting up the controls... I enjoy setting up, optimizing, and perfecting my keyboard and mouse bindings for a deep FPS almost as much as I enjoy agonizing over every skill point when creating my character for an old school RPG.

The Situation Room: L.A. gun buyback yields rocket launchers

LarsaruS says...

Yea like @zeoverlord said: Those are not reloadable like the RPG-7 but are one shot weapons where you then just dump the tube after shooting it once. Basically someone handed in a couple of already fired AT4 tubes. They are originally Swedish made and the US has adopted them as they are far superior to the weaker LAW so they have probably been brought home by a soldier who have fired them in training or perhaps even in one of the wars.

The Swedish name is Pansarskott m/86 but the US renamed them to AT4.

Oh I almost forgot that there are reloadable AT4s as well but they have been modified to fire 9mm pistol tracer rounds for target practice... cheaper and safer than the real deal...

While rocket launchers look and sound crazy to own, they dont scare me half as much as an assault rifle. They are good for taking out a tank or an armored car, but in terms of murdering many civilians, they are really pretty useless, compared to an assault rifle. And thats if you actually have the rocket that fits the launcher, which are highly specialized and difficult to obtain, probably as hard to get as the launcher itself. and that smaller one in the video, is an M72 LAW, which is a disposable rocket launcher, only good for one shot. if it didnt contain a rocket, its about as dangerous as an empty toilet roll.

At a recent gun amnesty (which is similar to these gun buybacks) in sweden someone turned in an anti aircraft cannon.

And for the record that AT-4 is not an RPG it's technically a recoilless grenade launcher
