canadian man faces jail for disagreeing with a feminist

one of the many faces of racism in america

I more or less agree with you, but if the company had not fired him the anger would have been redirected towards them until he was.

I find the current popular trend of online vigilantism in the name of social justice disturbing. Jon Ronson gives an excellent TED talk on the phenomenon.
I really must get around to reading his book.

Hey bob, you're on camera!!

The guy is an racist idiot, but I don't think anyone deserves to lose their job over something like this. He's a fucking grunt, he's not a public figure, he wasn't working and it wasn't like he wore his company's uniform or logo on him or anything and I don't think a company should punish someone for what they do after hours. He was definitely trolling for a fight, but there was no violence, just harsh words, racist or not.

...but it's a private company and racists aren't a protected class and they can fire who they want.

Mark Ronson: How sampling transformed music

ChaosEngine says...

Sorry, I missed the part where you actually engaged in a debate.

Let's recap shall we?

You posted a blanket statement about copyright, with no supporting arguments.

I responded with some reasons why I don't think it's that simple.

And you then came back with (to use you new favourite word) an ad hominem.

At no point in this thread have you made a single point or argument, other than linking to a libertarian pamphlet.

Then to top it all off, you seem to think you have the right to tell me to "debate somewhere else".

But it's ok, I have no interest in debating with a petty child like you anyway. I'm done.

Seriously dude.. If you want to "debate" intellectual property, then you need to read this first. Otherwise, you can go debate someone else.

Amy Winehouse -- Monkey Man

FlowersInHisHair says...

She looks like she wants to be some where else. Sorry, but i have to say, she did a terrible job on this classic song.

She acted like this throughout the whole of the rest of the gig. Amy was a glorious recording artist, with considerable songwriting talent and a voice in a class of its own, and Mark Ronson was the perfect production partner for her talent. The albums are amazing. But she was usually pretty dreadful live, and not because she couldn't sing live, it's simply that she couldn't sing live while drunk/high, which she did all too often.

Am I the only one that doesn't give a fuck if dumb people kill themselves doing dumb shit? Does the media really care or are they trying to create a perceived dilemma out of nothing?

I might be inclined to agree with you if we were talking about a 40 year old man, but this was just a dumb kid, probably drunk, and probably trying to impress his friends. He was an idiot, no doubt about it, but kids tend to do stupid things -- to imply that he somehow deserved to die for his idiocy seems harsh.

you're right...at the green age of 20, gravity may have still been a new idea to him. I would agree with you if the kid was 4 and had yet to develop a sense of self-preservation or awareness of his surroundings.

I think this book may interest you.
