Bloom Boxes

chingalera says...

Wind turbines to provide the comparable megawatts for millions of homes ARE a frivolous waste. The huge amounts needed for wasteful, programmed, energy-addicted peeps IS a huge logistical clusterfuck of resources there, notarobot.

Your example of one family with a turbine and a solar array is fine and all (the upfront cost for such a setup is a shitload of funds and the upkeep of his dual set-up is probably a complete bitch of a money-pit to maintain) but were talking efficiency for the masses here.. Your 'research' should be based upon something besides what seems more of an emotionally passionate ideal moreso than anything practical for the many.

Personally, I think this virgin-trail-run Bloom box bullshit is simply another snake-oil scam. Much more work need be done to ever make them practical. What really should done in the realm of a practical kind of "reality" (otherwise known as a construct...reality that is) is to revive anti-trust/monopoly laws to hobble the robber-baron's once again...

Go listen some Bucky Fuller perhaps and try to awaken from the pipe-dream of monkey-business-as-usual instead of towing some lazy cop-out nouveau-hippy green-party line??

A friend of mind put a windmill up on his property with a solar array and is completely off grid now. No more power bills.

To date I've seen no such data to make me feel that windmills are a waste or frivolous. Feel free to provide some figures and links.

Man Escapes 5 Yr Sentence After Dash Cam Footage Clears Him

newtboy says...

So wait, then the other two
1.helping him in the assault
2. helping him falsify 'evidence' (by not saying 'he's not going for your gun' to ruin the fake audio 'evidence')
3. not arresting him for being violently criminal right in front of 2 officers
4. not reporting his conduct and
5. helping him cover it up afterwards only garners them 10% culpability? That seems to be letting them off pretty light in my eyes....when only one robber brings a gun and kills the home owner, they all go for murder...why not for cops?
I'm with you on the 'harsher sentences for those who are paid to uphold the law that break it'. That only seems fair and correct.
EDIT: I think that should go triple for 'hindering prosecution' or 'interfering with an investigation' or any other abuse of their given 'powers'.

bcglorf said:

This case looks simpler than that to me. The main officer involved looks to be 90% of the problem and it looks as though he either enjoys power tripping and bullying in general, or equally likely has a hate-on for the victim for some unknown reason(but race is a good first guess).

This is a clear cut example of a criminal in a uniform and a really good reason I'd like sentences for crimes committed by uniformed officers come with much, much steeper penalties than if committed by joe blow public.

Meet The Store Owner Who Shot Five Gang Members

Glad to see fewer and fewer 'NRA bad (cue chimpanzee sounds)' comments here as well VoodooV. I would also point-out that the 'new west, cops and robbers' scenario is much more frightening a prospect considering that it's the intentional breeding grounds for absurd levels of criminal activity that is the systemic result of the insanity of a once prosperous country's hijacking by political/totalitarian criminals since the 60's 'hippies' sold-out and became corporate lackeys and lawyers of and for, the criminally insane.

"NRA soundbite of "buy a gun! pew pew pew! bad guys dead, live happily ever after!" would be one interpretation of the NRA's message, another would be, "Hey dumbass? Arm yourselves against being one of the first to go when the government fails you and the future you thought you had disappears overnight."

@Sundamx-He won, he's alive and the bad guys are dead. Five people dead IS a win if those 5 people still walked the planet the broken, unrepentant, criminal thugs that they were destined to remain.

You're ill-informed if you think that 'no amount of training will stop a bullet' besides, that sounds like a sound bite from an idiot and all-to-vocal fringe of semi-conscious do-nothings.

Not so much dumb luck in this scenario when you crunch the outcome and consider the body count.

Good on him. I'm glad this didn't get portrayed as just some guy thinking he was playing cops and robbers in the old west

he knew he was in danger, he armed himself and not only that he actually trained vigorously, something I don't think most people do. He did what he needed to do...and he doesn't glorify it. In the end, he pays a price and lives in fear anyway even though he succeeded.

you're exactly right @SDGundamX, it doesn't fit into the NRA soundbite of "buy a gun! pew pew pew! bad guys dead, live happily ever after!"

Did you watch to the end? He closed his store, lives in seclusion, and surrounds himself with weapons fearing gang reprisals. I'm not sure I'd call that a "win."

Plus, five people dead. Granted, not exactly upstanding members of society, and two clearly intended to kill him (the ones who were walking out the front door then turned around to open fire--sounded like it was an attempted revenge killing), but still it seems difficult to call five people dead a win.

I feel bad for the guy. I don't deny he was within his legal rights to shoot in every situation, but this video basically convinced me that owning a gun as a storekeeper is probably not a great security plan (as he himself notes in the end). This guy trained, he took precautions--I'd say obsessively so--and yet in the end the only reason he is alive today?

Dumb luck.

Attempted robbers still got past his security precautions and into his store, and they still shot him--multiple times. It's only luck that none of those times he got shot they didn't hit him in the spine, heart, major artery, etc. No amount of training is going to stop a bullet.

It's also dumb luck that none of his missed shots hit anyone out in the street (you can see in the stills from the crime scene photos that several bullets pierced the store windows and therefore went sailing out into the public).

Basically, I can't really see this video being used for NRA promotional purposes.

Why Everyone Should Own a Gun

shatterdrose says...

That and most robberies happen during the day, not at night . . . when people are home. That's just stupid. Why would you wait until you KNOW someone is home to break in? No, you do it during the day.

Second, you don't even have the make a gun sound. Just yell. Done. Most robbers aren't there to kill and rape you. Matter of fact, I'd wager about 99% are not. They want easy money, that's it.

Third, as @kir_mokum said, if they have a gun you'd be dead before you can fire off a shot anyway. Assuming, of course, they were there to kill and rape you like this woman thinks they are.

Fourth, a robbery where no one gets hurt equals you get away with it. A robbery where you kill someone with a gun means they'll hunt your sorry ass down. So again, the robber wants nothing to do with other people.

These arguments just breed fear and paranoia into people. Just ask the guy in Florida who killed a door to door salesman selling crabs. Or the boy who was gunned down because he knocked on the wrong door (literally, GPS put him one house away), or the drunk college kid in my town who tried to open what he thought was his door but instead was met with a shotgun blast to the head.

So no, this is not a valid argument. Try again.

How We Deal With Thieves in Brazil

braindonut says...

This doesn't seem like police brutality. The robber was pointing his gun at the cop.

If a guy points a gun at me and I happen to also be pointing a gun at him, I think I'd pull the trigger as well.

How We Deal With Thieves in Brazil

longde says...

Transcript from Reddit:
I translated most of the exchange between the people in the video. It starts at 0:41.
Robber: Stop! Stop, stop, stop. Give me the alarm!
Victim: Okay, okay.
Robber: Give me the alarm, give me the alarm!
Robber points the gun at victims head.
Victim: It's here, it's here.
Robber: Fuck, hurry!
Victim: It's right here, it's right here!
Victim hands over the alarm system key.
Victim: You can take it away, you can take it away!
Other robber approaches say something inaudible.
Victim: No man, I'm not armed.
Robber #2: What?
Victim: I don't have any gun on me, I'm not a cop.
Robber #2 to Robber: Let's go, let's go.
Victim: You guys can take it, take it.
Cop approaches Robber and BAM! BAM! (or pew! pew!, whatever you prefer)
Robber: Ouch! Fuck!
Victim: Thank you police! Thank you police! Thanks a lot!
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell. You're not gonna take away my bike. You're not gonna take it, thank god.
Victim put's helmet on the ground.
Inaudible exchange between victim and cop.
Another cop in black t-shirt steps in and talks to cop hero.
Black tshirt cop: I work for "Guarda". (a division of the police department) Are you a captain?
Cop gets in the car.
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell you son of a bitch.
Robber (whining): I got shot!
Victim (pissed off): You go fuck yourself! You're the one pointing gun at other people's face!
Robber: Oh, I'm gonna die.
Victim: You sure will! You should have already! Son of a bitch.
Robber inaudible, apparently asks someone to get him something to drink.
Victim: You're gonna drink in hell! You're gonna drink the devil!
Victim to other people around: Fuck, I'm going on my way and this asshole comes to rob me.
Victim pick up the helmet.
Victim (to camera): I'm lucky it's still recording. They tried to rob me here.
Victim (on the phone): Just come over here. This guy just tried to rob me and the cop shot him. Come quickly. Just don't tell dad. Come quickly!
Victim hangs up.
Victim: You have to live so you can get beat up in jail!
Victim (to himself): Fucking idiot.
Robber: I'm dying!
Victim: Yeah, you're supposed to! You have to get fucked. You're not the one that likes to rob? Getting a job is something you don't want to, right?! Do you have any idea how much I'm working to pay for this motorcycle?! You have no idea, right! And then you take it away easily!
Victim: And you're lucky that I wanted to get your buddy as well! But don't worry because he's gonna get caught.
Guy in blue t-shirt to victim: Was it red or black that one?
Victim: Red.
Victim (to some cop): Guy wasn't wearing a helmet but I noticed when I looked in the mirror they were up to no good.
Guy in blue t-shit starts patting down the robber.
Robber: Keep your hands off me! Fuck.
Blue t-shit guy reaches for something and hands it over to cop.
Robber to cop: I'm dying sir!
Victim: Oh now you say "sir" right?! You first scare the shit out of other people and now it's all "sir". "Sir" my ass buddy! Now you're gonna get fucked up in hell.
Vicim: How about your buddy? You see. He ran away!
Victim: You wanted to ride some Hornet, right?! (flips off) Here, now you're gonna ride a hornet in hell! (Hornet is a Honda model)
Victim picks up camera
Victim: Now you see this guy. He was going to rob me, now got all fucked up. The cops shot him.

Jon Stewart's 19 Tough Questions for Libertarians!

shatterdrose says...

I cleaned up my multiple rants. So sorry for the wall of text.

-------

It's because of guys like the one in the video that I laugh when people are they're Libertarian. I think they're overall idea is nice and dandy, but much like steadfast religious people who don't actually know their theology and how it would actually play out in reality, this guy contradicts himself by the end.

Especially his private defense agencies . . . except, ALL of those solutions are paid for by the government OR by private agencies to take away the liberties from those whom they see as their subjects. But then again, the initiation of force is immoral . . . so any defense agency is immoral, whether it's government funded or not.

And you don't need a fire department because private companies make fire sprinklers? Except, the reason fire sprinklers are everywhere now is because the government forced builders to use them after the free market allowed cities to burn down and hundreds if not thousands to die because of their lack of use. Yes, private companies solve all social issues . . .

------------------

Wait?? Did he really just say the original Robber Baron's lowered prices to be "competitive" and drive each other out of the market?? Wow . . . They lowered prices to put others out of business by raising prices where they already had a monopoly. It wasn't competitive at all. It was a monopoly so they could game the system and raise prices afterwards. There was no competition whatsoever. It was who could butter the hands of the Prices and Kings to get the most lucrative exclusive deal which eventually led to those countries rebelling by forcibly taking over those oils companies and nationalizing. Those stories are EXACTLY why the US has Anti-Trust laws . . .

And for the record, Steve Jobs was ousted from Apple because he spent too much money trying to make the US factories pretty on the inside and never wanted to move to China. It was a board of directors decision and overall, Apple hasn't been the worse offender overseas. It's not the greatest record, but hell, it's not the Wal-Mart suppliers that LOCKED their workers in a unsafe building they knew would catch on fire or crumble. Or both. But hey, free market baby!

-------------

WTF, Government FORCED business owners to segregate? Or could it simply be the RACISTS that refused to serve "coloreds" and their white politicians who had lucrative deals by being in government, so to get elected they passed laws against blacks.

And public education is responsible for racism? So these rich white people who NEVER went to public school were racists because of public education . . . . Holy shit this guy is a loon.

Just because the school is funded by the government doesn't mean the people teaching there aren't racists, or the society itself is racist. Or that there were MANY whites who were against racism and who fought alongside blacks to end racism and to give equal access, without ANY financial incentive whatsoever. Matter of fact, many people SUFFERED financially for standing up for the rights of others.

Jon Stewart's 19 Tough Questions for Libertarians!

blankfist says...

0:06 - Is government the antithesis of liberty?

0:47 - One of the things that enhances freedoms are roads. Infrastructure enhances freedom. A social safety net enhances freedom.

2:02 - What should we do with the losers that are picked by the free market?

3:38 - Do we live in a society or don't we? Are we a collective? Everybody's success is predicated on the hard work of all of us; nobody gets there on their own. Why should it be that the people who lose are hung out to dry? For a group that doesn't believe in evolution, it's awfully Darwinian.

5:41 - In a representative democracy, we are the government. We have work to do, and we have a business to run, and we have children to raise.. We elect you as our representatives to look after our interests within a democratic system.

7:41 - Is government inherently evil?

9:03 - Sometimes to protect the greater liberty you have to do things like form an army, or gather a group together to build a wall or levy.

9:47 - As soon as you've built an army, you've now said government isn't always inherently evil because we need it to help us sometimes, so now.. it's that old joke: Would you sleep with me for a million dollars? How about a dollar? Who do you think I am? We already decided who you are, now we're just negotiating.

10:54 - You say: government which governs least governments best. But that were the Articles of Confederation. We tried that for 8 years, it didn't work, and went to the Constitution.

11:16 - You give money to the IRS because you think they're gonna hire a bunch of people, that if your house catches on fire, will come there with water.

11:56 - Why is it that libertarians trust a corporation, in certain matters, more than they trust representatives that are accountable to voters? The idea that I would give up my liberty to an insurance company, as opposed to my representative, seems insane.

13:38 - Why is it that with competition, we have such difficulty with our health care system? ...and there are choices within the educational system.

15:00 - Would you go back to 1890?

16:20 - If we didn't have government, we'd all be in hovercrafts, and nobody would have cancer, and broccoli would be ice-cream?

16:30 - Unregulated markets have been tried. The 80's and the 90's were the robber baron age. These regulations didn't come out of an interest in restricting liberty. What they did is came out of an interest in helping those that had been victimized by a system that they couldn't fight back against.

19:04 - Why do you think workers that worked in the mines unionized?

20:13 - Without the government there are no labor unions, because they would be smashed by Pinkerton agencies or people hired, or even sometimes the government.

20:24 - Would the free market have desegregated restaurants in the South, or would the free market have done away with miscegenation, if it had been allowed to? Would Marten Luther King have been less effective than the free market? Those laws sprung up out of a majority sense of, in that time, that blacks should not... The free market there would not have supported integrated lunch counters.

23:23 - Government is necessary but must be held accountable for its decisions.
