Tom Scott trying to deal with his phobia of roller coasters

moonsammy says...

Very much so! It's worth watching, he's generally been a very authentic presenter, and he really doesn't shy away from being exposed here. Plus the footage of him on the 2nd and 3rd coasters is awesome - on each ride he goes through a major transformation in mood and it's really fun to watch.

What's the TLDR? Did he conquer his fear?

I could…if the closest one wasn’t over 300 miles away!

I admit I was scared to ride the Cyclone, the fastest wooden roller coaster at the time, but in my defense I was 7.

yeah people still occasionally die on them even nowadays. According to the googles its about 4/year. So you can still confidently ride knowing you're (very very very...) unlikely to die.

They told me the same thing in the 70’s so I gritted my teeth and rode the Texas Cyclone in Astroworld, a huge wood roller coaster, and the very next day someone died falling off the same coaster.
Soon after they replaced the automotive seat belts with a lap bar.

good for him! i used to fear rollercoasters then somone told me "youre not going to die so just have a good time."

simple statement but it made the difference. knowing that death isnt gonna happen i now go on the craziest rollercoasters i can find and try to ride as many as i can. the scarier the better!

Amazing New Japanese Hanabi Fireworks

newtboy jokingly says...

You had a point?

You complained this was some attempted trickery.
I pointed to the clues given that it wasn’t real like CGI tagged and the joke about kaiju rides.

You then took issue with it being artistic.
I pointed out that quality doesn’t determine if something is art.

You then took issue with the term CGI, eventually creating some sales pitch for I don’t know what intentionally misusing the term. (Do you mean the master class page?)
I pointed you to multiple sources for the definition of computer generated image, all of which you disagreed with.

What was the point again?

2022 Jubilee Cheese Rolling Contest

luxintenebris jokingly says...

there you go. split your vacation time between England and Spain.

A few days in June - chase cheese then a couple of days in July - have the bulls chase you.

If the bull running goes askew, might get out of the hospital just in time for La Tomatina Festival. <---have done that when we clear out the garden for winter.

if anything might be very good personal research on both the NHS and SNS. You'd rule any national healthcare debate against anyone who would dare to oppose you!

cheese. steak. and tomatoes. call it your 'big mac' tour.

[and - no - wasn't being serious. one doesn't run from bulls, ya' ride them!]

Perfect example for not taking life too seriously. Roll on cheese wheel!

Hmmmm….

The tags are “cgi” and “fx”. Channels include animation.

Also, do you really think they had kaiju rides?

I thought I was pretty clear this wasn’t real.

As to the point…I thought it was pretty.

it isn't anything except a bad attempt at misleading people.

World's First Floating City

newtboy says...

Call me after the first direct hit by a major monsoon.
Enough slack for tides means enough slack to bump into each other. This sounds great, but I don’t believe they’re ready for prime time. Even oil platforms sink in big storms, imagine if they had tens of thousands of people on them.
The Dutch do this better imo by making floating homes that ride up and down on poles…stationary except for up and down.

Look where you're going dumb dumb

SFOGuy says...

Yep; southbound 3rd Street, just past 22nd Street in San Francisco--taking you from downtown, where these folk like to ride around, make noise, create donuts, and generally get themselves noticed--the BayView Hunters Point, a historically ghettoized neighborhood.

Totally predictable.

Teachers Sabotage Don’t Say Gay Law By Following It

luxintenebris jokingly says...

first, how prevalent are these gay symposiums?

been through several flights of kids and yet to hear of one elementary teacher leading a colloquy on homosexuality. very unlikely it's ever been a thing or was so mild or explained deftly it never became a thing.

and no doubt if there was, would have heard about it. case in point:

was asked, "what does 'funky stuff' in the song mean?"

"don't know sweetie. probably slang for 'love'. I'll look it up on the internet."

they listen and ask about EVERYTHING! no more Rick James on the ride home.

***come to think of it, probably wouldn't mind the help.***

Kidnapped by a Gray Whale || ViralHog

00Scud00 says...

Yeah, but then what are you gonna do about it? Start hitting it? Foul language maybe? May as well just enjoy the ride, besides there will be plenty of time for screaming later if it comes to that.

Hmmm-can't think of one immediately. I wish I had a video of someone treating a large multi ton wild animal like it was a friendly puppy ...
