Devo - What We Do (Official Music Video)

Grimm says...

Founding member Bob 2 (Bob Casale) died a couple of weeks ago. He played rhythm guitar and keyboards. Their original drummer (Alan Myers) died last year. But he hadn't played with the band in over 20 years.

Didn't their guitarist just die earlier this year?

Bionic arm gives cyborg drummer superhuman skills

Zawash says...

From the article:
For Barnes, the device needed to be able to take cues from the human body. The lab designed a prosthesis that uses a technique called electromyography to pick up on electrical signals in the upper arm muscles. By tensing his biceps, Barnes controls a small motor that changes how tightly the prosthetic arm grips the drumstick and how quickly it moves, vital skills for a drummer.

The researchers then added another layer of complexity: a second, autonomous drumstick on the robot arm (see photo). This second stick, controlled via its own motor, uses a microphone and an accelerometer to sense the rhythm Barnes is playing, as well as music from any nearby musicians. An algorithm then produces a new beat with a complementary rhythm and melody, modelled on the music of jazz greats like John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk.

With this extra artificial intelligence, human and machine combine to make Barnes a kind of "superhuman drummer", Weinberg says.

This Cannot Be Described (wait for it)

Lyrics (found the translation on this site, which is definitely worth visiting to learn more about the group) are below. I've removed the original Japanese and Romanji transcriptions so that it is easier to read:

Title:
え・い・り・あ・ん
e i ri a n
A - L - I - E - N

Words and lyrics by Maximum the Ryo-kun

Flattering government
Deceiptful presentation
Fabricated details
Danger enterprise

Praise and censure creed
Jumbled up truth
All of Japan deploring
Has nihilism come?

Self-contradiction, loop of complaints
Fall into dilemma, many cases of depression
Swarming around rights, self-important men in suits
Coveting usury, some group or other

Self-interest slave loaded with empty arguments
Money disappears as vain expenses
Embracing distrust, discord arises
Standing idly on the side, discover indignation

STOP! STOP WINNY UPLOAD!!
STOP! STOP WINNY UPLOAD!!
*Translator’s note: Winny was a p2p pirating software like napster that was very popular in Japan but isn’t really used anymore. In an interview, Ryo-kun (who does hate when his music is pirated, I think) was asked why he used such an old reference, he mentioned that he wanted to have a catchy “STOP” phrase where other stuff like “STOP NUKES” could be replaced.

STOP! STOP WINNY UPLOAD!!
STOP! STOP WINNY UPLOAD!!

PV spoken ending:

D: We will not forgive use of WINNY under any circumstances! Anything but WINNY!

N: People aren’t even using WINNY these days. And there are plenty of other things we have to say “STOP!” to. So there’s no point in raising your voice like that. All the kids have left.

D: But, we can’t allow any more uploads...

N: No, I know, but look at the one kid left, about to cry.

D: (to kid) You think so too, don’t you?

N: No no no! She definitely has no idea. And now the last kid has left. You hate WINNY too, don’t you? I said, no one uses WINNY anymore.
Look at you, over there looking like Mitsue (Daisuke’s mom)...

D: What?!

N: Get that Mitsue look off your face.

N: It's one thing to talk bad about me...!

WILL FRANKEN Completely Underrated Comedian

artician says...

I was more entertained than I expected. At the very least, he's really creative, even if his stuff isn't your cup of tea. It's been a while since I've seen a comedian with this kind of rhythm. Most of them today are of the humorously anecdotal, or "You ever see/know/wonder about X?", like Louis CK, Bill Burr, etc. I love those guys, but it's refreshing to see someone with a different beat.
That said, this could be from the 80's or 90's for all I know, given the quality of the video.

Racism Is Way Better Than Astrology - Dara Ó Briain

swedishfriend says...

This is dumb. Pure dumb. History does exist and things do happen in waves and interference patterns through time. There absolutely should be patterns to what genetics show up when. If we base our lives on the sun and stars (which we do) then patterns of human behavior and genetic expression will form peaks and valleys in rhythm with the sun and stars. I don't know that astrology is a good way to recognize those patterns but the meat of the idea is completely ignored in this video.

Teenager Brings Class to Tears with Just a Few Words

AeroMechanical says...

Perhaps related to the phenomena where people with debilitating stutters can nonetheless sing perfectly. In the first part, it almost sounds as though he's rapping a little bit. It's damn impressive.

Perhaps there is a whole new field of therapy for people who suffer with stuttering through practicing freestyle rap. Can't say as I could possibly truly understand it, but I suspect it has a lot to do with establishing a rhythm. I'd be interested to know what he's listening to. Does it even need to have lyrics?

Terry Gilliam's Advice to Tarantino

CreamK says...

Tell to RIAA, MPAA and all the acta/sopa/pipa supporters.. For them it's very much a business affair and each work of art, every color, every rhythm and every word should be copyrighted. My artist inside says BS, i do what ever i like even if only one person ever hears or sees the results.

Art was doing great until 50s. Since, everything is getting harder and more protected. Art does not thrive on profit driven world. And we as a global community will never reach peace until our artists are free to communicate.

Sandra Bullock Rapping - The Jonathan Ross Show

As a white Irish male, and therefore a person who is genetically predisposed to have to no rhythm whatsoever, I feel qualified to say that was the whitest rapping I have ever seen.

Unexpected Trail Turn Causes Multiple Bike Pileup

shatterdrose says...

Mostly because most people are lazy honestly lol Which is ironic when you think about it. But generally speaking, most well marked trails will warn you of sudden changes like this. Part of the IMBA trail building guide is designing courses so they flow the way the rider would expect.

Honestly, in this case it does seem like a bout of stupidity mixed in with failure to properly mark the course. It would have been product to ask a LBS about the trail before riding it, as to avoid mistakes like this, or a sudden trail condition like a washout or avalanche.

In my own personal opinion: they were riding too fast for that section. It's like when a New Yorker comes down to Florida . . . they just fly on the interstates because they can. A smart rider knows when to speed up, and more importantly, when to slow down.

With drops and banks like these, they're not ultra expert by any means, but it certainly would be good as you said to know the map.

As for riders ride close, well, it varies. On road, it's drafting. Off road, you're not going to get the same wind resistance so it mostly just becomes a skill challenge. Many riders will ride ultra close like that so they can learn each others rhythms and ride better together. So in the event they do race, they're prepared.

When I lead rides, I always know who's going to up on my wheel and who's going to lag back. The ones who lag are the ones taking lessons and notes, and the ones right on my wheel are challenging themselves to keep up. I'm a very aggressive rider and frankly, I do some seriously stupid stuff. The ones on my wheel, either make it or don't. And there's been plenty of don'ts. The ones lagging behind are the safer ones. But that's not always the case in a fast changing course. If you want to know what the trail ahead is doing, you follow a leader who knows the course. They can tell you what's about to come up, or if they do something wrong they can warn you.

But you are correct in thinking that riding close like that can really be risky if the person in front falls. It's a give/take thing. Determine the amount of risk that's acceptable and prepare for that.

Snohw said:

I don't ride trails, but would love to one day. So I still just can't understand why bikers would not take the two cautions following;
1. Recon. Just know the map. I mean, no F1 driver (I can't say Nascar that's just a loop) or any kind of rally/track driver would just drive head-first on a track he doesn't know anything about.

2. Why ride 7-10 feet after eachother? It's not a race, seems dangerous if one guy falls and you have little time to break.
Only reason I see is that the riders after can see what the guy infront does and take notes/lesson, but that seems flawed because this second guy obviously just flew over as well, so that doesn't seem to work anyway.

New Album Is Out! (Blog Entry by Fusionaut)

Listening now-You were definitely influenced heavily by that whole Joe Zawinul/Return to Forever groove-Got a question: Read yer bio and I'm wondering if you're only an employee of the RCM as the piano-player or are you military?

Another question: All that rhythm but where's the brass and woodwinds?! Not even an Akai EWI 3020?....Whassups?!

Quite listenable, makes me wanna crash a pretentious social event!

Since the YT desc is quoted as-is...

The music is not a remix of the Safety Dance but rather an album version as originally done by Men Without Hats. The one that everyone remembers is a special edit done specifically for the music video.

slavery by consent-full documentary

chingalera says...

We are already slaves to nature, mate-The best case scenario has us shaking fists at the sky or ground-Slavery to someone's system that is opposed to our species' rhythm and biology...or our genetic code is when the shit gets scary-Slavery isn't as overt any longer, people reckon themselves too smart for that sort of thing-I distrust any world system without the evolution of the entire world's population in mind, and we ain't even close to that yet-We're still slaves to an ignorant path and the machine that keeps it going strong.

SevenFingers said:

I get the whole 'slavery with pay' thing but if it were not for society would we not be 'slaves' to nature? Because we have to work to survive in nature, whether we like to or not.

Harlem Residents React To The Harlem Shake Videos

chingalera says...

I broke a promise to rottenseed to stay on the down vote train but this speaks to my sensibilities as well as my suspicion that Harlem residents and black folks in general would see this meme as yet another way white folks can make anything and everybody look awkward and deficient.

Oh and finally, some examples of the authentic Harlem shake moves from people with rhythm-
