Alien: Covenant | Official Trailer

poolcleaner says...

I am a fan of Alien Rez, not because of Joss Whedon's patchwork script, but because at least it had the familiar comedic elements of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his usual returning ensemble cast (Ron Pearlamn, Dominique Pinon), as well as Sigorney Weaver being a badass mother.

Just my opinion. I love all of Jeunet's films; as wild and varied as the genres, his film style and character driven stories transcend the genre. City of Lost Child, Amelie, Delcatessen, Micmacs -- really excellent track record. Cool bit of science fiction in all of his films, even if just sort of a chaotic sense of fate and surrealism.

Ridley Scott is hit or miss -- but then again, Ridley Scott has far more a prolific film career so it's like arguing the planetary distances versus the intergalactic distances, we can't fully comprehend the multitude of influences involved in making a film and the secret to making it a good film, so what does it matter if it's 1 astronomical unit, 2 light years, or 26 billion light years, it's all beautiful art.

My kindness aside, his last 5 films: Robin Hood, Prometheus, The Counselor, Exodus, The Martian -- typical and BORING blockbustery movies. 1492 and everything after have been epic suck fests. Even Hannibal was a let down. They're all movies you're sort of excited about, if it weren't for the fact that he drags them out and adds little element of noticeable flair. Like Spielberg, hidden in realism. I want the stylistic elements of Alien and Blade Runner and Legend that PULLED YOU OUT of the movie experience to say loudly: This is art.

The soundtracks especially -- Ridley Scott replaced the original scoring of his movie Legend, which was a dazzling score by Tangerine Dream -- he replaced it with Jerry Goldsmith in rerelease... which sort of makes it all come full circle when you listen to the awful, typically EPIC score of Prometheus, minus all the atmosphere that the original soundtrack provided.

Ridley Scott seems to be heading down typical slasher movie plot lines. I mean, alien and aliens were awesome movies with different plots and feel. The latest ones seem afraid to risk anything. Say what you will about #3 and #4, they at least attempted to be fresh.

I think I'll wait for home viewing on this one. I'll be more interested in Blomkamp's.

I know his other crap but he's right on Juarez he pointed out the border town.

He was also right saying Mexican Government helicopter opened fire on US border patrol after the Mexican helicopter entered US airspace illegally. A complete act of war.

Ahh, this takes me back to the early days of internet videos when we had 240p as a max rez, added shitty, unrelated music, and did something weird to the video to make it unique, instead of just letting the awesomeness of the original shine through.

Need More Proof That The Music Industry Is Fake? Here You Go

Asmo says...

When you raise people up to be gods, they must become infallible. Hence autotune. Look at retouching for big stars in bluray or 4k rez to ensure every minute imperfection is covered up... The audience demands infallibility. You do a full dance routine, you're likely to be huffing and puffing by the end of it. I doubt even the fittest of "pop stars" could manage that. It's understandable that even long term stars who have real talent have gotten lazy.

Then there are just manufactured twats who can't sing worth shit but look the part. Nothing new there, can't believe people fall for it...

Live music is where it's at, give me a cover band belting out Wildflower by the Cult in a pub any day, or the recording of Faith No More at Brixton. They are real performances, they have stuff ups (Patton bungling one of the last verses of War Pigs for example) and that doesn't matter a lick because you're getting The Real Thing (/grin).

Daily Show: Australian Gun Control = Zero Mass Shootings

scheherazade says...

This chatter misses the main point.

Civil rights. The right to go about your own /consensual/ business with any number of other /consenting/ persons.

Rights to live your own life in peace, without bothering anyone else, and without being bothered.

Owning a gun harms no one. It's a personal matter. It has zero affect on anyone else.

Suicide is personal and consensual. It's nobody else's domain to judge. It's a simple property issue, about the most personal property that exists. Other people don't own your body. The clean-up crew was already paid for by the dead person's taxes (they aren't paid to sit around). Your family/friends, if they respected your wishes, they wouldn't criticize. God does not own you, and you don't have to worry about what he thinks.

Shooting NON CONSENTING individuals is a trespass onto those people, and it is wrong. These people should be punished accordingly, individually, for /their/ individual trespasses.

People at large should not be punished or have their rights taken away because of what someone else did. It's not their business.
That goes for guns, drugs, whatever else is strictly personal/consensual.

On a more specific note :
Having a gun does not necessitate killing.
Killing does not necessitate having a gun.
There is not a deterministic connection between killing and having guns.
For every example where 'gun control' and 'lower gun deaths' statistically aligned, there is another to show them not statistically aligned - precisely because one does not necessitate the other - and correlation is not causation.

I'm all for extremely hard punishment for killers - if it can be proven undeniably that they did it (high rez video / multiple close witnesses personally familiar with the killer / the like).
But I'm not interested in punishing anyone else for what they did.
(Just like I don't want to send drug users to jail because /someone else/ had a drug problem)

As far as I'm concerned, we have far too many laws that do not require any harm to be done to get your into trouble.

~5000 federal laws, thousands more per state, hundreds per county, hundreds per city, many with implementation guidelines defined by bureaucrats that outline multiple ways to violate each one.

It's a minefield. Everyone commits on average (according to some lawyer that wrote a book about it) around 3 felonies a day - when you do a complete review of their activities.
With 1 in 18 men in jail/on parole/in the system - do you really think we need to be sending more people to jail for having something and doing no harm with it?

How about focusing on the people doing harm - punishing in proportion to the harm done - but ignorant of what they used to do the harm.
What matters most is the suffering of the victims, not society's grimaces/preferances.

Cube: A Video About Video Game Graphics

L0cky says...

Very fun.

The ones I spotted were:

Pong, Asteroids, Battlezone, Mario, Gameboy boot screen, Quake, Quake 3, Silent Hill, Limbo, FEZ, Portal, Minecraft, The Unfinished Swan, Super Hexagon, Thomas Was Alone, Half-Life and Braid.

Some could be:
Snake, Rez, Yoshis Island, Dear Esther.

The one at 0:32 is bothering me as I'm sure it's something I played a lot as a kid. Also 00:59 makes me think of the original GTA but I think it's something else from around the same time.

CryEngine3 - Tech Trailer (Crysis 3)

Drax says...

I don't know, I found Crysis 2 to be one of the more enjoyable pure shooters in recent times. The hi rez and DX11 packs on PC also pushed the graphics to beyond console levels.

I did miss the openness of the original title (obviously due to limited onboard memory of consoles), but other than that it was pretty dope, imo.

Let me first say, I'm happy to see this. Any push on getting 3D gaming into the hands of more people is a good thing. However...

From their website: Resolution: 1280x800 (640x800 per eye)

Hmm, this is why I went with the Asus 1920x1080 Lightboost monitor over the Sony OLED head mounted display (added benefit: the monitor's a lot less dorky). While I hear the black levels on the OLED are incredible, it's a 720p display.. and I've read owners already regretting the "low rez" of the unit.

3D may not be everyone's bag for movies, but it's great for immersive gaming. Titles like Skyrim and Witcher 2 are freaking awesome in 3D.. but that low a rez is hard to go back to unless the unit's cheap(ish). At least with the monitor it serves well for gaming and everything else, and if a game doesn't work in 3D you get the 120hz, which is really nice for fluid gaming. These head units use 60hz per eye because there's no nead to flip between two images.. each eye gets it's own.

I'll be interested to hear how the huge FOV affects the experience though.

And for anyone getting into stereo gaming with an NVIDIA set up, this web site's invaluable. Someone figured out how to modify shaders in just about any game, and the community here modifies games to make them close to perfect in 3D, even some that were unplayable...

edit-Alright, just read this in their FAQ

"While it’s true that the developer kit uses a relatively low-resolution screen (1280x800), we promise it delivers a compelling, immersive 3D experience. And to be clear, we plan on improving the resolution of the screen for the consumer version. Stay tuned for more details!"
