What? Render time? I'd guess minutes at most. C'mon, this is 2013, not 1993.

But you're right: Oculus Rift + This = Star Trek Holodeck in real life. Sports is possibly the best application for this combination, since the area of play is limited and well defined. Let me build upon your vision of the future.

It would require the ability to change your camera angle even when the "video" is playing. They'd also need to thoroughly map all audio sources on the playing feild. Heck, I'm sure there are tons of other massive technical hurdles that I haven't even thought of, but if you will, imagine this:

Go to an empty baseball field (or other large, flat area) during a time when you can be assured you'll be totally alone. You'd need to set up some kind of markers, four in total, non-coplaner. They would track your movement on the field in 3 dimensions. You might also set up a large circle fence around the outter edge of the field with sticks and string, to make sure you don't run into a tree or a building, since you'll be totally blind once you don your Oculus Rift. Then, put on the Rift, and play the video with your vantage point on the field as the camera angle. You'd be holding in your hand a remote control which can pause, rewind, or fast forward.

You could literally be IN THE GAME, AS IT PLAYS, with the ability to run along side your favorite football player as he runs into the end zone, seeing everything he sees, hearing everything he hears. Or stand in the endzone, and watch your favorite plays from every imaginable angle as though you were really there. Rewind the "video" and watch again from the vantage point of the quarterback, or the referee, or the coach.

There is no higher form of sports immersion. It is Nirvana.

The question is: how long did it take to render? Is it hours or even days on large render farm for each clip? That might limit the practicality, certainly for sports broadcasts at least.

On the other hand, I hope in 10 or 15 years, I can watch sports and put the camera wherever I want in real time or put on my VR headset and watch as though I were standing next to the pitcher or sitting on the wing of a race car. That probably will happen and that is an AWESOME prospect.

If an American Football Coach Coached Soccer

It's ok Jason...no one understands the Offside rule. Heck they just recently clarified it and despite two separate Power Points and 16 years of Referee experience I'm still confused.

This sort of thing really isn't representative of the game. It happens and, as such, it happens too much but it's not the epidemic that it's made out to be.
It's always happened but it's only since we got a thousand slow motion any-angle replays that it's been noticed.

I don't know what 'the box' means but what the referee sees in the moment is nearly always what stands. No replays, no post-match analysis, unless the newspapers cause an almighty stink - causing justice to be dealt out based on media hysteria.

The official bodies say that this is to not undermine the referee, although I think it would be just the opposite and that FIFA and IFAB are undermining referees right now by letting TV views see all their mistakes without letting them use the same technology to avoid such mistakes. It wouldn't have taken 5 seconds for a video referee to review this and see what happened so he could relay this down to the referee who would book #7 for simulation and revoke #8's second booking.

It doesn't matter in the long run but IMHO, #7 doesn't look like a little pansy to me. He doesn't look soft, he doesn't look weak. Player #7 looks like a cynical cheat, not a softie. He's been clever and gained a significant advantage for his team.

He'd only look weak if anyone actually believed he was that hurt but no one did, he just forced the referee into making a decision (as he can't act like he didn't see it). I suspect the referee knew better, but he could only officiate on what he saw - the ball going from player A's boot into player B's face and even if player B isn't hurt that's against the rules if intentional. As play had stopped, it's rather unlikely to accidentally hit someone's face ... but not impossible, obviously.

There's plenty of tough players who I would not want to get into a fight with, but it's not as tough as ice hockey which seems to be a game for psychopaths. It's not as tough as rugby or American football on the whole, although the distinction's not as clear cut.

AeroMechanical said:

Yeah, but I hear they're giving players penalties and fines in the NBA for it now.

This, of course, really requires officiation from the box, which I'm not sure soccer has? Anyway it should. I don't watch a lot of soccer, and people are always telling me what a tough sport it is, but from the bits I've seen, they look like a bunch of little pansies to me. They should sort that out.

Football (soccer) in a nutshell

yellowc says...

What makes it even sadder is that players are under no illusion they won't get caught, as long as they're not caught by the referee, they simply don't care.

To me this is even worse, they are happy to gain benefits by faking, even though they know the world can see them basically cheating, you can sugar coat it but gaining an advantage through ill means is cheating.

The post-match penalty should be much much greater and the fans should not go along with it as long as it's their team that benefitted, this is equally pathetic. I've seen stabbings on the street over a team winning from a bad call on a dive, yet not but a week before, the losing team had a similar situation.

All in all, I love the game but I absolutely despise the act of diving, I'm never going to just "accept it" as part of the game, what a load of shit.

Unions Assault On Camera

Yogi says...

Oh yeah I totally agree they're idiots for attacking him. Some people are not good with confrontation at all. I've been a referee for half my life, this guy couldn't bait me into a fight with anything and I'd calmly explain how he is a complete douchebag to him and his mother all day if he'd like me to. Other people though, like some players I ref, are not right in the head. They go INSANE if something goes counter to how they believe it should go, and they'll get violent easily.

People are people, and they suck. So best for them to organize and the bad people to get sat down by the good people and told to pipe down.

probie said:

I don't doubt the guy is a complete joke. If the guy is a douchebag stirring up trouble and looking for attention, than you ignore him. Quickest way to get rid of those seeking it.

I'm commenting more on the fact of human nature and people immediately resorting to violence rather than engaging in rational discussion when confronted with a differing opinion.

The above video's probably a bad example anyway due to lack of context and editing.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

shinyblurry says...

In order to be a scientist, you have to practice science. Getting an advanced degree does not make you a scientist any more than me studying football make me a football player.

Here's a summary:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation_science#Scientific_criticism

If scientists are those that practice science then every creation scientist who has published a peer reviewed paper is a scientist.

http://creation.com/do-creationists-publish-in-notable-refereed-journals

And here's the real question. Name one current product based off of any hypothesis/theory that was posited and proven by 'Creation Science'. Too hard? What about any process, maybe based on the geology or biology research.

Read the above link.

You can talk about 'the controversy' all you want, but the proof is that we use technology daily that is based on physical properties discovered by the same individuals that studied Rubidium. Sure, the specific Rubidium research didn't go into daily life, but the research into radioactive isotopes led to Nuclear Fission, and then after that, it 'exploded'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission#Natural_fission_chain-reactors_on_Earth

Some of the greatest scientists who ever lived were creationists, does that make all of their claims valid?

You're not a martyr, and neither is anyone in the US. None of this conversation has anything to do with the religious Zealots that are killing other religious individuals in other countries.

You said there was no persecution today, but in fact there is quite a bit. Christianity is illegal in 51 countries. It's almost getting to the point in America where sharing your faith might become a civil rights issue.

And you're absolutely correct, me slipping in a little jab at comparing Christian Zealots to Islam Zealots definitely reveal a bit about my 'character'... but just because it was an attack doesn't make it, or anything else I said, less true.

God says what is true about you and me, and that's all that matters.

Noam Chomsky on Professional Sports as a Distraction

Yogi says...

This was made more relevant the past couple weeks as the country ERUPTED in anger at the fact we have "Replacement Refs" making bad calls in NFL games. It was just shocking, I was seeing this shit reported up to the minute on the BBC. Every news channel and website was constantly harping on it, but that wasn't the worst part. THE WORST PART of this was the fans, the people in this country who's lives are being fucked over by the government and corporations. Their major concern was that some refs weren't doing a good enough job and the good refs were at home instead. It's ridiculous.

The American people deserve the country they have and the country they work for. I love sports, I'm a referee, it's my Job. But I understand better than most the difference between Sport and Life. Some people brag about a certain sport being their Life. Those people have never been foreclosed on, or had to watch their children walk to school with no breakfast. This country man, I'm just fucking sick every day.

I don't get why coaches think officials are idiots. We know you're trying to cheat the system, we know you're not trying to call a time out. You're a lying sack of crap and you should be called on it.

Have you been following what's going on at all? These aren't the regular officials. These are replacements called up from like division III college football. They are getting the rules wrong. They aren't calling personal fouls. Players are getting hurt. Teams are getting four, five timeouts in a half because the officials don't know what they're doing.

Yeah I have been following what's going on. It must be pointed out that several colleges are doing studies on this and what they found is that the same number of calls and mistakes have been made by the replacement officials as were made by the regular officials by this time last year.

A lot of the sports media is having a field day with this because controversy, even made up controversy generates pageviews and ratings. You are being fed sensationalist lies. I believe having watched several games this season that these guys aren't as good as the officials they replaced but they're much better than the media and stupid fans would have you believe.

They're also A MILLION FUCKING TIMES BETTER, than the fatass fucks that are constantly saying they're shit. Fatass fans need to shut up and volunteer to referee, we're always needing more because they quit after being screamed at too much by dumbass fans.

He's a security guard, not a referee.

Seriously though, unless they're breaking windows or store property he really doesn't have any jurisdiction.

haha I've been a ref since when I was in high school. I know the angles and all that, that's why I'm laughing. Even funnier is your empty threat of beating me up. I live in Philadelphia. Message me when you come to visit, I'll give you a proper ass beating tough guy. hahaha internet tough guys make me laugh more than anything. Bring it bitch. I'll have my friend record it all. It will be my first number #1. >> ^Yogi:

haha i got way too good a laugh from this>> ^Yogi:
How is the ref a bum? Have you ever refereed? Because from that angle that certainly had to look like a foul, he called what he saw that doesn't make him a bum.
ON TOP OF THAT the referee admitted his mistake and called a drop ball instead of a penalty kick which he is absolutely within his rights to insist. This is an honest referee, who listens to the players and doesn't just act like a jerk.
If you think he's a bum for making a mistake and then copping to it, you're an asshole.

You're still an asshole and an idiot. I've reffed games and been threatened with knives, if I knew you I'd beat the living shit out of you.
