Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" PitchShifted into Ball of Terror
Right? She's got the frame of a pole vaulter on a no-protein diet. Forget put some clothes on, put some cheeseburgers down!
I never found her attractive. She has no shape, no figure, no curves. This video reinforced that perception.

Beauty of Mathematics
they were showing what they could, for comparison to the other algorithm-representation model of the other slides.
they chose the amino acids triplets... then showed a string of DNA (codons) and the PCR/electrophoresis was a visualization again of the strings of DNA... and make up fingerprints eventually with the protein they output.
the mathematical themes here are recursion, at least
Beauty of Mathematics
Hmm cool, but the fingerprint/DNA collage doesnt really make sense, the "script" window seems to show the 60-something codons that matches the 20 different amino acids that makes up the proteins , and the middle part shows a PCR result in gel electrophoresis, a system of displaying DNA markers, (Admittedly sometimes referred to as DNA fingerprinting, but it doesnt actually have much to do with actual fingerprints..) In short, while these three things are linked in that they all have to do with living cells and identifications, there isnt actually any direct links, and, importantly no direct link to math..
Sure, math is used in genetics, protein folding and I guess fingerprint-recognition, but that particular slide made a mess of it.

Well, they're low cholesterol and high protein,
hotter than a Mexican jumping bean-
Have em low-strung or vacuum packed,
Them mammies come alive when you bumpin' that rack-
Round like GONG, they hold me like a lanyard,

Def enough to knock you, to your knees,

Going to the Doctor in America
Just read through this whole damn thread. And damn was that tiring. It's been a while since I've spoken up about anything on ye olde 'Sift, and now seems like a good time to do so.
Hi there, I'm a Type 1 Diabetic, and completely dependant on a regular dosage of insulin via a pump. I've been Diabetic for the last 15 years (diagnosed at age 15 during March Break of Grade 9). Thirteen years ago I was put on a pump because I was taking 9 shots a day to try and manage my wildly out of control "beetus". I was on a good diet as well, with few heavy carbs, but my body has a hard time maintaining a good balance of insulin sensitivity.
Now, on to the idea that Type 1 Diabetes can be "cured" or "treated" without insulin... Bollocks. Plain and simple.
Almost two years ago I set it upon myself to get fitter and healthier. I have never been overweight, just the less-than-average amount of fat I would say, but I was bored with how things were going and decided to try something new for my fitness routines; I went 100% Paleo.
Yeah, for almost two years I have rarely (and I mean rarely) eaten anything aside from fruits (one serving a day, two if I'm deserving of it) veggies, nuts and protein. Nothing processed, as little preservatives and chemicals as I can manage (I read *a lot* of nutritional labels when shopping for new foods) and I buy most of my meat and veggies from local farms and farmer's markets.
Has this helped my Diabetes? Extremely marginally. My insulin sensitivity has increased by a fraction... But that's it. Has my pancreas started creating its own insulin? Not a chance in hell.
While doing this whole paleo eating lifestyle I've also been doing a lot of intervals and weight training, and I've made some great strides. But back to the original idea of getting back to "natural" ways of living/eating and "curing" my diabetes? Yeah, no dice there, ladies and gentlemen.
I cannot be without my pump hooked up to my body for more than two hours before I would need to be sent to the hospital. Nothing I have done, with all my dedication, determination, and strong will, has made my Diabetes any "better" than it was when I was first diagnosed. If anything, it has taken more of my time and money and energy to get where I am now, with nothing to show for it from my condition's perspective.
If anyone, anyone at all, thinks they can cure Diabetes Mellitus by eating better and taking better care of themselves I'll suggest this: remove your pancreas and see if your body builds you a new one while you're testing out your hypothesis, because in all seriousness and fairness, that's what it's like to be Type 1. My body killed my pancreas making it a useless, lifeless organ. It will *never* awaken again to produce my own insulin without the help of true science and excellent doctors.
So, you know what I've done, and can take it from me that it will not cure you of your Type 1 Diabetes. Now I want you to tell me what I'm not doing to help "cure myself".
I'm an open-minded skeptic.
... But I'm not so open-minded that my brain will fall out.
Damn those protein stains!

um
As mentioned, diabetes mellitus type 1 is genetic, you need regular insulin injections because, without it your blood sugar levels will be sky high, and sugar in the blood leads to glycation. Glycation is where sugars attach to proteins (such as the ones in your red blood cells) and then become useless/damaging. The amount of glycation is measured by a test called the HbA1C, something diabetics will be familiar with. Glycation cannot be avoided by faith...
The comment @Sniper007 made about curing diabetes is almost true however, as it has been demonstrated time and time again (in studies for over 20 years) that calorie restricted diets (and to a lesser extent weight loss) can basically cure diabetes (type 2). It is thought that one of the main reasons for this is that it helps to reduce adipose tissue (fat) that has been laid down in places like the pancreas and liver. A small reduction in the adipose tissue in the pancreas helps it regain much of its lost function. This calorie restriction doesn't appear to work in all type 2 diabetics, but it does work in many.
Info about the adipose tissue deposition/pancreas issue.

Guy films juvenile kestrel in the backyard when suddenly...
For someone who has admitted to being too much of a pansy to kill his own supper, you exhibit an enormous understanding of what goes through the head of someone that enjoys such a hobby.
I've got a story for you. When I was a child, I lived in a rural community full of hunters. Not my family. My parents taught me to love and respect animals. We had a couple of dogs I loved dearly. If stray cats showed up at our door, we fed them and gave them attention. If an animal was injured, we nursed it back to health. In school there were a small group of boys who came from a family of hunters. They were taught to hunt from a very young age and animals had no value to them, other than to be enjoyed as a meal. They would torture animals for the fun of it...throw rocks at the birds and squirrels to score points, stomp on them to finish them off and then skin them so they would have their trophies. They would pull the legs off live frogs. Pour gasoline on defenseless little animals and light them on fire. They got off on making animals squeal and would brag about it to whoever would listen. They also bullied kids at school. They didn't feel any empathy and got a rush from inflicting pain and making children cry and scream. One day I was walking home from school and saw the boys with a gas can. They had cornered a feral cat that I had been feeding and were about to light it on fire. I intervened which led to a violent confrontation and thankfully the cat got away. I hollered for a neighbor to help which scared them off but I still ended up being beaten quite badly. When I got home, one of my dogs was missing. We couldn't find him for days. I later found his charred remains in the adjoining forest to my property.
In case anyone was wondering, my user name "carnivorous" is a long standing pet name given to me by my wife (don't ask). I am not a vegetarian, I eat well balanced meals and have a garden where we grow a lot of our own vegetables and my wife bakes bread and other baked goods on a regular basis. We do make an effort to eat less meat and find other sources of protein such as beans, eggs, nuts and cheese, but when we do eat meat we don't let any of it go to waste and appreciate the animals who lost their lives for our meal. As I stated previously in the thread, I am not opposed to hunting if an animal is killed humanely for the sole purpose of providing food and I would prefer that an animal had a glorious life in the wild, ending in a quick and painless death. The issue I have with shang is not about the hunting, but his enjoyment of the violence associated with hunting and what he is teaching his children about violence and aggression. My children have beautiful innocent little hearts and care about the feelings of people, animals and even insects and I am proud of how I've raised them.
Think me a bully if you will but I have always been the sort that stands up for what I believe in and I will not apologize for that.
i dont understand all the flack peeps are dumping on @shang.
he hunts for his own food.
which means he does not support the grotesque slaughterhouse factories but rather fresh game with no gmo-fed poultry or cattle.no anti-biotic or cancer-ridden pork.
that should be praised ya?
or how about the fact that he is teaching his children responsible gun care and safety.
to not only be more self sufficient and self-reliant but also more responsible and safety conscious in regards to firearms.
how is this a bad thing?
oh...
i see.
its because YOU cant relate to how he provides and teaches his children so therefore what he is doing HAS to be some evil indoctrination to find glee in killing things.
so shang is an asshole because you cant get your head out of yours?
because YOU dont own a gun...
because YOU dont hunt for your food...
single-minded,unenlightened self-righteous twats.
my big sister and brother in law live exactly as @shang does.
they grow their own fruits and veggies and hunt (well,my brother in law does) for all their own meat.
my brother in law tried for years to get me into hunting.
i just couldnt do it and chose to be a hypocrite, much like @Buck,because i was too much a pansy to kill bambi.
i much rather prefer the killing be done away(far away) from me.
but the ignorance and presumption being displayed on this thread in regards to hunting for your own meat is..well..staggering.
oh ..
and before anybody decides to jump the assumption shark and start spouting off redneck and deliverance references.my brother in law is a retired electrical engineer and my big sis has two (count em TWO) doctorates.

Apple Creating Technology To Help Cops Hide Police Brutality
@kevingrr, Thank You. I have been decrying the schlock of TYT as long as these embeds started appearing on the VS maybe 4 years ago?? The lapdog fanatics here clam the fuck up whenever I suggest their being duped-out of the meat of what's news as they trade the protein of meaning for smarmy, snipeish, sub-standard infotainment that strokes their programmed sensibilities.
Compare TYT to Fox News, simply insert banter that "feels" and "sounds" better to the critical-thinking-challenged ineffectual and, "Voila, let's call it bad drugs disguised as political commentary."

So if you and about 6 neighbors did this, ya pretty much need a freezer for yer game/protein fix or if yer a veggie-only, yer set. You can make pet food outta the fish or give it to your friends who aren't iodine-deficient...
Have always hated the entire idea of a yard full of non-indigenous grass or shrubberies as well...a waste of garden real-estate! Humanity rally is becoming too fucking stupid to live, huh??

CBD possesses sedative properties (Carlini and Cunha, 1981), and a clinical
trial showed that it reduces the anxiety and other unpleasant psychological
side effects provoked by pure THC (Zuardi et al. 1982). CBD modulates the
pharmacokinetics of THC by three mechanisms: (1) it has a slight affinity for
cannabinoid receptors (Ki at CB1 = 4350 nM, compared to THC = 41 nM,
Showalter et al. 1996), and it signals receptors as an antagonist or reverse agonist
(Petitet et al. 1998), (2) CBD may modulate signal transduction by perturbing
the fluidity of neuronal membranes, or by remodeling G-proteins that
carry intracellular signals downstream from cannabinoid receptors, and (3)CBD
is a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A11 metabolism, thus it blocks the
hydroxylation of THC to its 11-hydroxy metabolite (Bornheim et al. 1995).
The 11-hydroxy metabolite is four times more psychoactive than unmetabolized
THC (Browne and Weissman 1981), and four times more immunosuppressive
(Klein et al. 1987).
CBD provides antipsychotic benefits (Zuardi et al. 1995). It increases dopamine
activity, serves as a serotonin uptake inhibitor, and enhances norepinephrine
activity (Banerjee et al. 1975; Poddar and Dewey 1980). CBD protects
neurons from glutamate toxicity and serves as an antioxidant, more potently
than ascorbate and α-tocopherol (Hampson et al. 1998). Auspiciously, CBD
does not decrease acetylcholine (ACh) activity in the brain (Domino 1976;
Cheney et al. 1981). THC, in contrast, reduces hippocampal ACh release in
rats (Carta et al. 1998), and this correlates with loss of short-term memory consolidation.
In the hippocampus THC also inhibits N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)
receptor activity (Misner and Sullivan 1999; Shen and Thayer 1999), and
NMDA synaptic transmission is crucial for memory consolidation (Shimizu et
al. 2000). CBD, unlike THC, does not dampen the firing of hippocampal cells
(Heyser et al. 1993) and does not disrupt learning (Brodkin and Moerschbaecher
1997).
Consroe (1998) presented an excellent review of CBD in neurological disorders.
In some studies, it ameliorates symptoms of Huntington’s disease, such
as dystonia and dyskinesia. CBD mitigates other dystonic conditions, such as
torticollis, in rat studies and uncontrolled human studies. CBD functions as an
anticonvulsant in rats, on a par with phenytoin (Dilantin, a standard antiepileptic
drug).
CBD demonstrated a synergistic benefit in the reduction of intestinal motility
in mice produced by THC (Anderson, Jackson, and Chesher 1974). This
may be an important component of observed benefits of cannabis in inflammatory
bowel diseases.
