That's exactly what I've done. I think she broke "the rules" when she requested it be removed, so I mock her by saying it again (or something similar). And if I want to protest that the easiest way is to mock it. (Hell, I nearly pulled the infamous chuggo video out of sift talk again too, but I can understand your problems with advertisers and didn't want to be too much of a pain to you guys.)

If the mail you got had been to me (and it was my post), I may or may not have removed the info, because if she's getting really hurt and I don't really care, then there's no reason for it to be there. I can honestly not see how she would be so hurt over that though. This is turning into Sierra Noble-gate, I think.

I can certainly understand the disassociation you talk about. The John Gabriel Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory is very true indeed, but I freely identify myself and stand by my words.

My comment was really intended for you, calvados and her; and if you've all seen it, I don't really see the use in having it anymore. If you really feel it hurts her and you (and the sift) you have my blessing to remove it, and I won't bitch about it (any more).

Peace.

One malady of Internet life I feel is that people are very quick to take action for perceived "rights" issues- but seldom consider the individual human beings that their actions affect. It's a disassocation- happens in cars because we can't readily see the people inside and consider the car to be a beast at least in some portion of our brains. We do and say things that we would never do or say to a person's face.

You've taken the easy, automatic action- flipping off a car that you think has broken the road rules. I don't expect you to see it this way, because I'm sure you're feeling fairly defensive at this point. But wow, I really do wish people were more empathetic saw the world less in shades of black and white.

If you want to be smug, move to San Francisco. I'm no more pleased or displeased with myself than normal, because I don't really care. If someone pushes, I push back, and that's all I've done here.

You're the one being a dick to me, not the other way around.

In reply to this comment by dag:
Yes, quite the high road you're taking there. You must be really pleased with yourself. Congrats.

The censorship comes not from you, but from her. She's feeling "outraged" that her daughter was talked about on the Internet, and while you obviously didn't just change the post (which would have been far worse), you passed on a "network note" that essentially made calvados change the post, not to look like a dick. To be completely honest, I'm not sure what was actually in the post before, I made my comment after his changes. I can see the point in not announcing something like she was nude on the beach or whatever in the title, but to guild trip people into not saying anything like it in the comments is just not kosher.

A comment is not a big deal. I don't want anyone to come in and tell me what I can and can't say about something so trivial. The next thing is that she wants me to only think good thoughts about her daughter.

There is such a thing as tact - if someone had died, I wouldn't do a little dance at his funeral - but this is just not relevant. If she wants to maintain the pristine veneer of her little fairy tale offspring, then she can go off to live in Narnia - this is the real world.

I don't care about private if you don't, I'm the one taking the high road.

In reply to this comment by dag:
Censorship. Really? You're going to go that route? Where's the censorship here? Have you seen me deleting anything?

I asked Calvados if he could modify his post to save this kid and her mom a bit of embarrassment - he complied. I waited a week for him to make the change - and I would have done absolutely nothing if he decided not to. Where exactly is this censorship you speak of?

Way to make a moral stand- you sure showed this lady.

PS, I'm making this private- but if this is something you want out in the open, feel free to unprivate it. Ta.

Because I don't like censors. Not in any shape or form.

If I had done a 4Chan, it would be much worse (a fancy photoshop, for instance) - but I'm not a monster. Besides, other people have made far worse comments, and if she's giving you grief over my comment then I am sorry, for you, not her.

And she's not a minor at the "tender age of 19", so she can shove her concern.

In reply to this comment by dag:
Very clever and all - but why? We try hard to make VideoSift not 4Chan. This lady had a legitimate concern for her minor daughter, and this is not nice.

lesbians subjected to corrective rape

longde says...

Asmo, I reject your racist characterization of black South Africans. You sound just like the fools on the video talking about lesbians.

The problem I have with this video is the same I have with any that goes out and cherry picks responses. Four or five guys living in the most ignorant and destitute parts of South Africa are supposed to represent all the men.

Give me a break.

I have to say that I could go out to a pristine suburb of America, wait around after church services, and find 5 well-dressed white men who would tender the same sentiments about lesbians.

Has rape been eradicated in the West? If so, I must not have gotten the news. There is even a prevalent rape problem with the US military and contractors in Iraq; in fact, it is not rare to hear cases of our some of our male troops raping their female counterparts. Does this condemn the whole army or all male troops? Of course not. Does the high incidence of date rape condemn all american male college students. Again, of course not.

I condemn what happened to these women; I am wary of replacing one hate for another.

Why not recycle the boxes? Jerk. Boxes are good for keeping dust out. And not all movies owned by the same company was - at least for some period of time - one of the reasons for not all the movies being available.

>> ^alizarin:
MythTv (Linux DVR) awesomely does away way allot of this - you can skip through all those normally unskippable FBI warnings, animated menus and bullshit.
And all the above has allot to do with people pirating movies off the internet - avoids it all.

You know, this may be what finally compels me to install a Linux build finally.

>> ^spoco2:
^ No, that's how you justify why you download movies... you really do it because it's free.
Tell me if there was a DVD/BluRay of the movie and a downloaded version, both for free, you wouldn't take the DVD/BluRay.
I download movies too, and then if I like them, I buy them on DVD... because I have young kids I hardly ever get to go to the movies to see if I like something and I don't buy DVDs sight unseen.
As damn annoying as the unskippable stuff is, that's about my only complaint with them at all really. I never, EVER bought a movie on VHS, ever, even back then I was of the mindset 'I am not paying for something that degrades so quickly'.
I have hundreds of DVDs though, and on occasion when I have watched something on VHS it reminds me just how damn good we have it now... pristine visuals, surround sound, fascinating extras, the ability to skip anywhere.
And his whine about the movies not starting back where you left it... um... most DVD players have memory for the last X DVDs you played in there, so that's a moot point too.
Not that I didn't enjoy his rant and agreed with some of it, but I think he was stretching on some points.

Yeah, this is why I prefer to watch things either with a 1. Kickass DVD player or 2. Kickass DVD playback software. I've been lazy and after I did my last O/S install I didn't really customize my computer much... this must be changed.

Also interesting - it's on sale, 15% off until Monday.

Pricey though... but powerful too. Note that it has a free trial period if you're not sure about it.

He raises a few valid points, but really, all I could think about while I was watching this was Louis CK's wise words.
I mean really, we're living in a time when we can watch any movie we want in pristine quality whenever we feel like it -- so what if you have to sit through a few ads, or deal with a fiddly menu. I know most of us are too young to remember, but there was a time where if you missed a movie on the big screen, that was it. You could never watch it again. You just had to hope it eventually got reissued back to theatres. Imagine not having the luxury of being able to watch your favourite film whenever you feel like it, or at all, for that matter. Yeah.

I can understand that sentiment, but the same point can be made about just about anything at any time. Boy shouldn't the Romans have been happy they didn't have to live in caves and walk around in awe of the fact that they had entertaining gladiator games to watch.

Fact remains, we have technology that can work better, why shouldn't it? After all this is about corporate interests deliberately holding back the functionality of a service you have PAID for either because of their interest in further profits outside of what you have already given them (commercials) or just stupidity (absolutely horribly retarded menus and boxes), which probably angers me the most because there's really no reason what so ever for it.

So yeah, of course we've made progress from what once was, I would be more worried if we didn't. But that's no reason to stop demanding more progress still, we wouldn't want to stagnate after all.

Btw: despite the quote that rant wasn't aimed specifically at Sarzy, but rather at the whole mentality that such comments and Louis CK's bit seem to come from. I can appreciate the comedy of it, but I see no actual basis for it.

Irksome Things And Stuff (Fail Talk Post)

Crosswords says...

"People who smear their filthy fingers all over my pristine laptop screen"
Somebody else knows my pain! Not sure how many times I've had to tell people to keep their grubby paws off my screen. It is not necessary to point at something that's 2 feet in front of my face.

I hate how unobservant most people are in general. If it's not happening within a few inches of their immediate proximity, they don't seem to even notice. I think a lot of the shit people do that annoys me would disappear if they were slightly more aware of their surroundings.

Irksome Things And Stuff (Fail Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

Jesse Ventura Body Slams Elizabeth Hasselbeck

Mormon Church Lied About Prop 8 Political Expenditure

ponceleon says...

The problem here isn't LDS, but the current state of the public's attitude. Just think to the civil war. If you asked the "Average" man if slaves should be freed, they would probably say no.

The thing about democracy is that while majority rule is part of it, it also needs checks and balances in order to protect minorities from popular, but uneducated, attitudes. All you need to do is look back to other unpopular causes: equal rights for women, races, etc. At one point or another, these would have easily lost similar votes in their times.

The key is to continue to press for real education and truth and not fear-mongering and hypocrisy.

Religion's ownership of morality is bunk and hopefully this will come to light as we move forward. Just as Steve Harvey's bullshit statement in that other video about atheists, the religious right's claim to righteousness will be undermined ultimately by the hate with fuels it. If you look at the voting numbers for Obama as well as prop 8, you see clear lines drawn at age groups. Eventually the old racist, bigoted people will be replaced by a younger generation that has grown up with friends and family who live openly gay and understand that we are all people regardless...

Finally, I'll just say that this so-called pristine concept of marriage that is supposedly being "protected" is just a fabrication. Marriage does not do anything to prevent horror to the individuals involved, their children, or their extended families. There is not one impartial study out there that can show otherwise. If the religious right wants to maintain "marriage" as it was intended by their specific faiths at their inceptions, then they are talking NOT about a partnership in love, but a business agreement whereby one family sells a female to another for money, allegiance, or some other compensation.

Please if anyone is credited with "inventing" marriage as they are claiming, it is the poets, authors, and other creative people throughout history who wrote of an idealized concept that had little bearing in reality at the time. Ironically, I am willing to be that many of those people were homosexuals...

Getaway In Stockholm 8 - Getaway Rider

Trancecoach says...

What this guy needs is to be let onto a real speed motor-cross racetrack, where riders are typically humbled by their inability to pin the vehicle in such a pristine driving environment. Then he'll find his actual limits, rather than trying to find it on the city streets where he puts himself (and everyone else!) at risk.
