What is your drug of choice? (User Poll by Throbbin)

JAPR says...

>> ^kronosposeidon:
I'm a drinker, but I prefer weed. Every once in a blue moon I'll smoke a bowl or two with friends. I just don't want to worry about being busted for possession. Having kids really cramps your druggin'.

Same thing here (minus the kids). I drink frequently and only smoke once in a while, but I prefer the high from weed as a general rule (though I love good beers so much...gonna have some Victory Prima Pilsener tonight, yay).

VideoSift 4.0 Roundtable (Sift Talk Post)

I'd like to see the FAQ get a makeover with the help of some of the creative talent on this site. Between the ranking system, invocations, posting rules and all of the weird and awesome culture/mythology we've built up over the years, it's a fairly complex place. It would be nice if the FAQ were more fun to read and explained more of the cultural quirks of the site.

The rules could be done in the style of an airplane safety brochure. The discussion of power points and rank could be described as if it were some type of fantasy RPG and done in the style of an old PRIMA strategy guide (invocations as spells, etc.). Maybe we could even coax one of the filmmakers to do an old classroom filmstrip style instructional video.

Continuing with the gamer theme, it would also be fun to have a set of xbox style 'achievement points' for achieving particular tasks (getting 100 votes on a video, sifting 3 vids in a day, etc.)

Would love to hear ideas from others on this.

I'd like to see nested comments too.

VideoSift 4.0 Roundtable (Sift Talk Post)

kronosposeidon says...

As edeot already mentioned, I also believe nested comments would be great. The threads would be more interesting and/or entertaining if this were available. Other ideas:

1. I've said it a hundred times before, but it bears repeating: More video hosts. Here are some solid hosts that have had a presence on the internet for over a couple of years already:

- FunnyOrDie
- 5MinLife
- blip.tv
- MyVideo.de - Sure, it's a German-language host, but they already have many videos here.
- Current TV
- Reuters - hopefully that will encourage more world news videos

BTW, none of those are region-blocked

2. Fix Vimeo and CollegeHumor so that sub-Gold members can post videos. It's my understanding that they're unable to post videos from them right now.

3. Replace the iFilm logo with Spike TV, because that's what iFilm became well over a year ago. Go ahead and type in 'www.ifilm.com' and see what happens. iFilm is no más. And then fix it so that sub-Gold members can embed their videos.

4. Thumbnails, thumbnails, thumbnails! I'm not talking about thumbnails for every video site under the sun; just give us thumbnail pictures for all of our approved hosts. Right now none of these approved hosts have thumbnail pictures:

- Google
- The Onion
- VideoJug
- Spike TV (formerly iFilm)
- MySpace
- Yahoo!
- DailyMotion
- NBC
- MTV Music
- Comedy Central
- Hulu
- Game Trailers
- Veoh

In fact we only have seven out of the 20 approved hosts that have thumbnail pics. Those are CollegeHumor, YouTube, Metacafe, Vimeo, Break, Revver, and LiveLeak. If you want people to post from more approved sites, I think you need to give us more thumbnail pics. They usually boost vote tallies, as most experienced members already know.

BTW, both Atom Films and Comedy Central use the MTV Music player, so if you can get thumbnail pics for MTV Music videos then you should be able to do the same for Atom Films and Comedy Central, which are both owned by Viacom. Viacom also owns Spike TV, but they still use a different player than the others I just mentioned.

5. Get rid of both the hobbling and Siftquisition features. Like I said before, they're good ideas in theory, but in practice they've done more harm than good.

6. Give us the option to block any user from commenting on our profile pages. This should hopefully lead to less squabbling.

7. Put up all the unassigned channels for bid, going to the members with the most star points. We have too many unassigned channels, and many of those get misused because of this.

8. Provided it doesn't significantly increase bandwidth or other operational costs, give us a game room. The membership was in favor of it, so make it so, but ONLY if it doesn't increase your costs significantly.

9. Crown members get the privilege of prima noctis with probationary members, as God has ordained it our right.

Rep. Sherman (D-CA) vs. CNBC's Mark Haines

HollywoodBob says...

Just imagine what the world would look like if a $500,000 salary cap applied to EVERYONE.

I wonder what would happen to the prices of consumer goods, if the companies weren't paying out hundreds of millions of dollars to executives and spokespeople.

Cinema, theater and sporting event tickets would likely be drastically reduced since the production costs would be cut immensely once you did away with multi-million dollar paychecks for prima donna celebs and pro athletes.

Be Afraid [Fox News: 14 Year Old Child Political "Prodigy"]

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

The difference being that the principle behind "social equality" is to use tax dollars in a way that benefits the country as a whole more than it benefits the individuals who used to have that money.

There are many of the founding fathers, intelligent citizens, economists, philosophers, and thinkers who would argue that it is not the place of government to make decisions relating to the morality in determining 'what is good for the country'. What is deemed 'for the good of the country' varies from person to person. I would posit to you that heavy taxaton, excessive burdens on industry and wealth, as well as government control over the means of production and distribution are TERRIBLE for 'for the country'.

It states that an educated populace is good for the economy and therefore, for the country as a whole; that children brought up in poverty are more likely to commit crimes, therefore supporting single mothers with tax dollars is an investment in the future of the country

These are indeed societal goods. However, merely because there are undesireable or negative elements in society it does not logically follow that "government" is...
(A) the RIGHT entity to address these issues or
(B) any GOOD at addressing these issues.

I would posit to you that there is a lot of prima facie evidence both in the US and outside of it that government is BAD at addressing these issues. Even at its very best, government solutions to social issues are highly inefficient, wasteful, and requires the forceful confiscation of freedom. At worst, they devolve into fascism, oppression, and even genocide. Socially addressed societal ills are also never resolved. It can even be persuasively argued that central planning on societal issues as a general rule tends to actually make the problem even worse (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, HUD, Fannie/Freddie, race quotas, 'War on Poverty', et al).

The people who vote for a socialist government are actively saying, "We want the best for our country, and we are willing to pay more for it."

I would suggest this is incorrect. Most people that like the romantic 'theory' of socialism are in fact saying, "We want the government to confistace wealth and dribble out inadequate amounts of it to whatever entities the government decides needs it." Sadly, 99.999% of the time, the government determines that THE GOVERNMENT is the entity that needs all that wealth...

That's what I'm saying by staying in Canada where the wages are lower, the taxes are higher, but my children will attend the best universities in the world

Christian Bale goes...um...Batshit (Wtf Talk Post)

He's got issues alright. It doesn't matter how deep in concentration he was, he can always get back into that state, given time. What you can't do is go around being a prick to everyone just because you consider your work more important that someone else's. If the shot meant that much to him, he should have calmly stopped and relayed that he can't concentrate with a DP who's stumbling around behind the camera, distracting him.

However, he also could have been having a bad day, as we all have had them. And considering what's been happening in his personal life as of late (didn't he get into a fight with his family or something?), I'm sure he's wound up pretty tight. But, that's no excuse for turning into a prima donna.

Hey, the guy is a world class actor; anybody who can go from being "Holocaust-thin" (ie. The Machinist) to packing on the muscle for Batman is grade A in my book. But that doesn't mean he wasn't being a prick and a little, whiny bitch in this instance.

President of UN General Assembly: Israel "Apartheid" State

10768 says...

>> ^messenger:
^Are you a character witness? None of what you said has anything to do with whether Israel is an apartheid state. Israel may get good marks at school, go all-state in basketball, and phone mom on her birthday, but that doesn't mean Israel didn't kick the neighbour's dog.
For the record,
International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid:

inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them
Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court"
inhumane acts of a character ... committed in the context of an institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime

Now, agree or disagree that this applies to the case of Israel and Gaza with reference to conditions there. But don't tell me that Israel organized a bake sale for a girl guides summer camp.

OK, I disagree that this can be applied to the situation in Gaza in any way.
The first class status of Israeli Arabs is prima facia evidence that there is no racism involved, just defensive posturing.

John Cleese explains the offside rule in soccer

Payback says...

From what I've seen of professional "soccer", I can completely understand the active-participant aspect of offside. I have never seen such a bunch of lazy, lethargic, prima-donnas in my entire life. The amateur leagues and clubs actually RUN around, and KICK the ball, and COVER the other team, and set up team mates to score. Not just walk around, 50 feet from anyone, waiting for an opportunity for they themselves to score.

I might write an entire blog post about this elsewhere, but I think it all comes down to the word "nuclear." Saying "nukular" in the hopes of coming off as folksy and unpretentious is cynical and is exactly why I hate most people, especially politicians. Saying "nukular" because you've never looked at the word closely, or because you're just a sloppy speaker, is prima fascia evidence that you're a fucking MORON and shouldn't be trusted with the keys to the car nevermind the codes to the nuclear football.

Sigh. Son, this is no way to get back at the world for that stuttering problem you had as a child. Let it go...

Yeah, I think I saw the whole video in my high school government class.

I've met some of the guys who do this kind of thing. A guest speaker at my high school graduation, for instance, wrote a book that cherry-picked quotes that make the Founders sound like staunch Evangelicals.

Not only are their facts wrong, but most of these guys are huge prima donnas.
