New "Whose Line is it Anyway?" Preview Clip with Maggie Q

brycewi19 says...

The singing improv never worked for me. Because of the rhyming schemes the jokes became predictable and drawn out.
Now, if you want to get me interested in a preview of this, then show me some Ryan Stiles and Colin Mocherie doing their thing with very little direction from the host.

Wreck It Ralph - I'm Bad, And That's Good

artician says...

As someone who grew up with games, to the point that the medium has become the driving force for my life and career, I was turned off by the previews of the film. I can't describe why. I definitely felt... like Pixar had no "right" to touch on the medium. Like they wouldn't get it. Like it was pandering to fans of the, as I like to call it jokingly, "superior medium", simply because we've had a solid 40+ years of gaming culture, and a solid 10-15 years of it in the mainstream.
I watched the film for the first time today, and I fucking loved it. It was classic Pixar storytelling, with just the right nods to the subtleties and eccentricities of video games to be really endearing, while avoiding pandering to the audience.
Given the sheer variety of worlds that video games have to offer, I was a little disappointed (on the nit-picky scale) that they didn't explore more settings, but other than that, it's definitely in my book for being on par with all other Pixar films.
If it failed for any identifiable reason, I'd guess that either A) the film-going public is still not in touch with the medium, B) film-going public are turned off by the medium, or C), there were still a few too many gaming in-jokes for the general populace to enjoy (of which there were quite a few, at least in the first half).

Either way, this post got me to finally watch the film.

Also: did the post change? I could swear it had different dialogue when I watched it earlier...

Man of Steel Trailer #3

LucasArts Remembered

shagen454 says...

Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, The Dig, Loom, Dark Forces, Grim Fandango... Shit man. We have been missing LucasArts for a while. :~(

I remember being a little kid in 4th grade, I loved the Monkey Island soundtrack so much that I recorded the songs with my little boom box cassette recorder from the Tandy. That game was one of those magical sorts where as a little kid I fantasized about actually living in that game world.

Before Dark Forces came out I remember staring at previews in PC Gamer for months at a time. When it came out it was unbelievably AWESOME. Really special company, really special times. Will be forever in my mind with LOVE.

That said there is still hope. Telltale, which consists of former LucasArts employees has been doing a fantastic job of innovating upon adventure gaming; the future is still bright.

Sax Battle In NYC Subway

I don't see why the camera cannot be adjusted to record correctly, and have the preview be a shrunk version of the horizontal view.

Recording an event should facilitate the event first, and the ineptitude of the operator second. The width of a subject is usually greater than it's height, or the distance between two subjects is based on horizontal distance. Recording devices/software should be made to assume this if it is true most of the time. Have a manual option to enable the type of recording seen in this video.

This is not like early video games. So much media these days is not only created on but also consumed on mobile phones. And phones are easier and more convenient when held in one hand, portrait mode.

My personal opinion is that this is the way things are going, as long as the devices retain the same form factor then they're simply easier to use this way.

Star Trek Into Darkness - International Trailer

Fletch says...

Well, it IS just a preview, but I kinda see your point. But movies are fantasy. Big budget movies require big audiences, and one way to bring them (and me) in is to make movies like this. I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of the previous movie (think I'll watch it on BluRay right now), and I have no doubt I'll love this one.

Is character development really needed for characters we've known for over 45 years? Granted, new actors will portray them a little differently, and the reboot takes place earlier than TOS. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't find myself wanting for more character exposition after the last movie. Hell, I thought they did an awesome job of introducing each character and laying out their individual personalities and quirks.

My least favorite of all the Star Trek series was TNG. I dug it, but it would be at the bottom if I had to rank them. I dunno, too idealist and preachy, maybe. JFC, I think Picard referred to the Prime Directive at least once an episode. Some episodes just bored me to death. I wanted every episode to be Enterprise vs. the Borg. I much prefer Kirk kicking a Gorn's ass, or fighting alongside Abe Lincoln, or in pursuit of the Praetor's finest flagship, or battling Apollo or "General Trelane, Retired". TOS was often campy, but always fun, and that's how I prefer my Star Trek.

Edit: Noted that you were speaking more generally about movies nowadays, and I'm speaking specifically about Star Trek.

I'm not a Star Trek fan, but neither do I dislike it. The problem here for me isn't what they've done to the franchise, it's what seems to be happening to every movie.

Why is everyone a "badass"? Why is everyone talking in the Batman voice? Why must every tense scene be accompanied by the focus character yelling, "aaaaaaaAAAAAAGGGH!"? Why is every tense scene followed by an exchange of quips? Why does everything have to be destroyed?

The Formula is tired and overdone. I would like to see movies with character development, acting, and interesting stories again. Even summer blockbusters should have room for that.
