World of Warcraft with Microsoft Kinect

Who is this guy, and what lab was he built in?!?!

dannym3141 says...

Yeah, i'm pretty good at rock band - never ever played a real drum set, never had a lesson, never learned, but i can do all the default songs on expert except run for the hills now (my wrists/arms just get tired - mostly because my technique is abysmal).

I'd all-but guarantee this guy is very very good on a real drum set, and the video was just incredible.

Not only has playing rock band probably given me a very good step up on the way to learning to play drums - if i chose to - but it gave me a real interest in perhaps taking it up. Even if just for the sake of being able to play run to the hills i want to learn technique so that i'm not using muscles i don't need to use resulting in tiredness.

Is that not good for music in general?

Birds on the Wires

Found it in an article... can't find an actual video:

Relevant part:

"Girard infused his expertise and passion for music into:

Birds: Alone in his loft, a composer-played by real-life composer, Walter Boudreau-is struggling with some serious writer's block as he works at his piano. After what appears to be several hours of hard effort, he is rewarded with inspiration from a most unlikely source, the pigeons outside his window. The conclusion: Be More inspired."

So, with the advances in music editing software that can separate chords into individual notes, someone could create a game that would allow you to play any real instrument into a microphone and score you based on accuracy. If 'Training Mode' started with basic chords and 'Easy Mode' reduced songs to those basic chords, then you'd have an effective teaching tool for a wide range of instruments.

All they have to do is reward good playing with new outfits for the in-game avatar and my daughter would never stop playing the game.

Super Hardcore Mario Bros. 2! For Hardcore Gamers ONLY!

Real hardcore gamers play the real Japanese Super Mario Bros 2. I got it on the wii virtual console. It took me like a month of continuing to beat the game. It's insanely hard.
From wikipedia:
Nintendo's original sequel to Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1986, however because of that game's perceived difficulty and its close similarities to the original game, Nintendo decided not to release it in the West at that time. The redesigned Western version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan in 1992 under the title Super Mario USA (スーパーマリオUSA?), and in 1993 the original Japanese version was released to the rest of the world as "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" (part of the Super Mario All-Stars collection for the SNES).

Yeah, I gave up on that one pretty quick.

Kanye Insults Taylor Swift at VMAs

It's not like any of those celebs actually play any real part in making their music videos, so I don't see why either of them would care.
For that matter the only reason it's the 'artist' is up there collecting the award and not the music video producer is because the VMAs are a promotional event and really have nothing to do with rewarding talent anyway.

Did you see Beyonce's video? You can't accuse her of not being a big part of it when she's front and center working it the entire time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mVEGfH4s5g

It's a pretty simple yet edgy and captivating video IMO, having just watched it today after all of this controversy erupted. Taylor Swift's video was fine, as well.

Starwars, solo.

i'm not calling any video editing trickery, but to me this looks a bit like guitar hero/rock band.
all the notes are prerecorded and no matter what key you press the proper notes will play. so you just bash keys in rhythm and it sounds like you are playing the real thing.

The MMORPGification of games (NSFW) (Blog Entry by jwray)

SO... your skillset is to be THE determinate for successful gaming... when playing a "real time strategy" or "first person shooter" game...

BUT IF... Skills can be a function of time spent on a game, and...

IF... your position is persistent features unlocked by time spent shouldn't exist in certain games...

AND... you play games with any sort of score, or time limit...

THAN... your gained skills are a persistent feature that only you possess.

SO...essentially, you're against games having more meaning than they should in people's lives... so that games can be enjoyed when they are played, and not considered outside that time.

I hear (see) your cry for help, and I say to you: You are not alone. You can get a tan this summer. I believe in you; I'll always believe in you.

he's in a studio, smooman - probably multiple takes and as many songs as they can fit in the studio time.. it's fine to go mental when you're playing a small set but stamina must play a real part when you're drumming so fast and for so long (correct me if i'm wrong)

Will Rock Band Drums Teach You Real World Drumming?

Psychologic says...

The most important part about playing drums in a band is being able to hold a steady tempo. Oddly enough, that is something you practice a lot with games like this. It doesn't matter how awesome your technique is... if you can't hold a steady beat, no one will want you.

Obviously the game won't teach you how to be amazing, but it will help with stability. The guitar in the game won't teach you how to play a real one, but the drums do seem to transfer somewhat to real playing (at a certain level at least).
