Football (soccer) in a nutshell

thumpa28 says...

LOL easy, tiger. You've obviously missed the tongue in cheek reference and are way more emotional about this than I care to be.

I really have no interest in trying to convert the unintiated into the delights of football, ignorance is always a bad starting point, and lets be honest its about as likely as me coming to appreciate american football. I make no claims about that sport other than it is as rife with the diseases that plague high value professional sports as any other. The point is this video is not representative - you could find a hundred more videos where legs are broken by tackles. Doesnt mean thats part of the game or a reflection of anything more than a natural statistical by-product from the sheer quantity of games played all over the world.

take this video for instance - the guy is obviously playing on the fact that a deliberate hand to head (usually a punch) is an immediate red card offence, which puts the opposing team down to ten men and in all kinds of trouble. Its kind of akin to putting a cash bounty on tackling concussion prone players - within the game, but barely. Not very sportsmanlike.

As to the provenance of 'american football', it would make more sense to call it rugby, that being the original inspiration. But again, it obviously means more to you than it does to me so i'll pass on that debate.

How is changing teams for defense (which has as much to do with specialized players as it does resting) or the breaks in play which are procedural rules in football compare to the use and acceptance of "flopping" to elicit an unjustified benefit in what is supposed to be a fair and competitive sport?

American Football players are under fire for lying about their health to keep playing and to maintain respect which sets a certain expectation for fans and basketball players are heavily criticized for flopping as well so it's not just hating on soccer....its just more accepted in soccer it appears to the uninitiated.

Also google why it's called football so you sound less ignorant. It makes complete sense why American Football is called football just like it makes sense for Rugby Rules, Australian Rules, and Association Rules (Soccer) to be called "football".

@lucky760
Sorry to bug you, man.
I "fixed" this video with an embed from NBC. I think they are playing games here.
I watched the video here:
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/digital-shorts/video/massive-head-wound-harry/278696/
And got the "old style" embed code there. Siftbot accepted the embed, but it doesn't seem to play. All I get is the NBC peacock. If you can't get this to work please take the PP I got back (unless you think I'm so awesome I deserve it )
Thanks, buddy.

Eric Winston Tears into Fans Who Cheered Quarterbacks Injury

@JiggaJonson, you still haven't gotten why they were cheering losing their own quarterback. It had nothing to do with cheering a hit. It had to do with being happy their shitty QB wouldn't be starting anymore. It's not bloodthirstiness. It's a roster issue.
@Yogi, people die from playing all sports every year. That's my point. Soccer is often considered the worst for concussions (as repeated low level concussions are more problematic than single big ones given time to heal) and cardiac arrest concerns (talk about over exertion) and basketball is often considered the worst for overall injuries (e.g. joints). I don't think football is unique in this regard, and at least they are trying to make rule changes to do something about it. If you want to stop concussions, don't allow headers in soccer, or make them all wear helmets and padding. Go ahead and see how that flies with their fans.
Finally, why is this guy wrong to criticize fans for cheering an injured human being? Because of your stereotyping of football fans? That's a specious argument to say the least.

He's wrong because they're the customer. If he doesn't like the customers demands he should pack it in. The point is he's saying this isn't the Roman Colosseum when it clearly is, because the fans decide what they cheer and they've been cheering big injuries for awhile now. They're the blood thirsty mob, if you don't like it than don't participate. I didn't play my senior year of High School Football, largely because I was congratulated by half the defense after injuring the other teams QB so badly he needed to be Airlifted off the field in case of paralyzation. He got up luckily, we got to see a Helicopter land and take off on our field.

High School coaches have always taught kids how to hurt the opponent, you've done a good thing if you put their star player out of the game. This is the sport, this is how it works.

A Review Of The Game : Crusader Kings 2

legacy0100 says...

This was pretty much my experience playing the game. Throughout the game you'll be observing incremental changes of data, make small adjustments, and continue the simulation. This would have been great for a real life computer programmer who can sit long hours in front of the computer without much visual stimulation and be able to observe text based data for hours on end. For others, it is a complete nightmare.

I've tried to love paradox, I really did. I played all three Europa Universalis series, Victoria and the Crusader Kings. They're all equally repetitive and data focused. I thought I was stupid for not being able to enjoy the game. But I later found out that it's not about me being stupid. It was just a matter of preference.

Paradox fans argue that Hearts of Iron is suppose to be an 'action-based' series and that people who want more action should play that instead. LOL That's a load of bollocks lol lol lol Calling Hearts of Iron an 'action-based' game is like an African villager calling Cheetah the fastest thing in the world, not having seen airplanes or trains or cars in his or her life. The game is equally slow, except instead of 'build textile' buttons, you get 'build tanks' buttons.

Sorry you see it this way, I was the one editing the video and it's not at all about not being able to play all the way through, it's about making the video more interesting to watch and being more creative in videography. There is a great number of music videos done this way.

Mass Effect 3 Offical Launch Trailer

Yeah, I want to meet the guy who decided that the Mako needed to go and replace it with planet scanning....and then punch him in the throat.

I just think that if you know you're making a trilogy and your first game is a hit. You really shouldn't mess with it a whole lot. Sure, update the graphics and fix and polish things and definitely certain things should be expanded on. the XBox version of ME1 had that shitty inventory which they fixed in the PC version. And sure the shooter side of ME1 definitely needed some corrections as the Pinnacle Station DLC definitely highlighted the weaknesses of the shooter side of ME1

I just don't think you should totally re-invent the game and the core mechanics.

It makes me wonder though if they're going to pull a halo and go back and remaster ME1 and somehow make ME1 more in line with the gameplay of ME2 and 3. Hrm.

It's going to be interesting to see how the game feels if you actually play all three back to back.

PS. The heat sink clip system still infuriates me.

Zero Punctuation: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

braindonut says...

I loved the game. The great parts more than outweighed the bad parts (which yes, the boss fights and the crazed people were bad).

I didn't mind the ending-tron 5000. I selected an ending that I enjoyed quite a bit and it felt like a decent close to the game. Also, ~25 hours of gameplay is not bad for this kind of game, these days. I'm sure other action RPGs get more hours in there, but 25 is nothing to be upset about.

Ultimately, I think it was the best game I've played all year.
