Cruel, unusual punishment of WikiLeaker, Bradley Manning

Lawdeedaw says...

Thank you for speaking politely and to the point skinnydaddy. As someone who both fought for this country and knows directly how prisoners are treated, please let me explain my observations.

Manning is being treated vastly different than every other prisoner. High profile inmates, those with no violent issues or issues of self-harm, are taken to a single celled unit (Usually called a lockdown unit, or in the past, called "the hole.") However, those inmates can use the phone, sleep with pillows and blankets, set up video-visitation with family, etc. In fact, they must be given these opportunities (Example, Manning, Parris Hilton, or the POS who smashed a baby's head into the shower and would otherwise die in regular population.)

Now, suicidal inmates are different but the law covers them too. Otherwise, every inmate a Correctional Officer or military officer did not like would be deemed "suicidal." The inmate is usually placed on observation by a Supervisor or certified Medical Staff. Unless obvious signs exist (Trying to slash his wrists for example) the inmate must be regularly evaluated and every reasonable attempt to correct his self-harming behavior must be given. This includes prescribed medications. Notes must be constantly maintained as to why this inmate is where he is. This helps free up 1-Lawsuits, and 2-Man power. Each inmate on Observation takes more resources than, I estimate, 20 regular inmates.

Unfortunately, I would like to agree with you--so this issue could become a non-issue. Sadly, I cannot. Manning means nothing to me--but the bigger picture does. At first Gitmo was spoken about as being fine because it did not apply to citizens. Then people say Manning, a citizen, is fine because he is military. When you embolden to Government to take from its people, or others, you embolden them to take from everyone!

After Manning, it will be some new "classification" of people the government seeks to punish... It is a slippery slope.

The North Pole is Shifting

GeeSussFreeK says...

>> ^srd:

I fail to see why this is exciting. The magnetic north pole has always been off and always been moving (albeit slowly in the range of a few kilometers per year). My old school atlas from 1988 puts it in the Canadian arctic, in the Parry islands (roughly 100 degrees west, 75 degrees north).
Worse than the drift in the north pole are local disturbances in the forc^H^H^H^H magnetic fields, causing compasses to point over 30 degrees away from true north. If you're dependent on a magnetic compass for navigating, chances are you also have an up-to-date map catalogueing the local deviations.
Most aircraft have gyros for these reasons. Alternatively, you can always magnetize the aircraft and place it in a calm body of water. It will always point true north.

The reason it is slightly more exciting/crazy is because the rate of change is accelerating... drastically. From 1970, it has changed from 9 km/year to 41 km/year, to what it is now, nearly 64km a year. The acceleration might just be par for course, but it could also hint at a pole change. Really, we just don't know, and like all things, change scares us to death.

Amazing precision - Cutting a BB with a katana, mid-flight.

That's nothing, real samurai can cut down multiple rounds of live ammunition in flight. You know, the way characters in final fantasy can parry bullets with over-sized swords.

You're talking about jedi.

George RR Martin & Connie Willis (Books Talk Post)

MycroftHomlz says...

They(George, Connie and the other) were all really great. It seems like he is under a tremendous amount of pressure to finish the books and he wants to take his time.

That said, I really wish he would finish A Dance With Dragons...

I also learned that Tyrion is George RR Martin, according to Parris his girlfriend.

On a side note, I have been rereading the series. I have several suspicions.

1) Jon is Rahgaer and Lyanna's son.
2) Tyrion is going to be the hand to Dany.
3) Dany is going to betray Jon for love, by telling him she does not love him so he does not break his vow to the wall.
4) Howland Reed will tell Jon of his parentage.
5) Jon is the 'Prince who was promised' and will rule the Westeros.
6) The one of the three heads of the dragon is Tyrion.
7) Brienne says "Jamie".

Kill Bill - The Bride vs. O-Ren Ishii

NordlichReiter says...

you would never expect how real Ken are used.

Its a finesse weapon, the blade cannot travel in two planes, when it strikes at target it will warp.

kendo and, kenjutsu are farce.

Much like western gun duels, it is either over in an instant or it is a dirty grimy bowel exploding, shit covered ordeal.

The cuts are Shomen(straight up and down strike to the forhead), Yokomen(angled attacking the neck or temple), Do(angled attack to the sides of the stomach, right above the hips), hashi(attacking the back of the knees), and tsuki(thrusting). They can be executed on both sides of the body.

They are for cutting soft unarmored targets, with exception to Shomenuchi (most samurai had helmets with crests on them)

Most cuts are done with about 5 inches of the tip of the sword. There are no parries or, blocks. These movements are done so that the swordsmen knows where the enemies weapon is, because eyes should always be locked on their target. The only way to keep from getting hit with the weapon is to move your body out of the kill zone. Blocking puts your weapon in danger of damage.

I still dig these clips .

Countdown Special Comment - Prop 8

imstellar28 says...

here is my solution:

1. dissolve the legal term "marriage"
2. permit civil unions between all individuals
3. let society come up with descriptive words for different types of civil unions [i.e. marriage (man and woman), garriage (same sex), parriage (polygamy) ]
4. those who want to shun homosexual civil unions can do so...philosophically...with their freedom of speech. they can still protest, complain, etc. but they should not be permitted to legally intervene.

there is a difference between what someone can do and what someone should do.

every human should be able to enter into contract which establishes a civil union. at the same time, every human should be free hold the opinion that humans shouldn't marry the same sex, even if they are legally allowed to do so. the latter is an opinion, and it must be legally protected by the freedom of speech in the same way the that freedom to marry (garry, parry) whomever you chose must be legally protected.

the idea that someone shouldn't marry the same sex is no more "bigoted" than the idea that someone shouldn't eat at mcdonalds. it is an opinion, and it would be "bigoted" to claim that someone's opinion is invalid.

it is important to distinguish between stating your opinion (philosophical attack) and forcing your opinion (legal attack). the former is not bigotry, but the latter would be.
